November 26, 200322 yr After trading Derrek Lee, the Marlins improved their contract offer to Luis Castillo, adding a vesting option for a fourth year worth $6 million. Their previous offer was believed to be worth $15.5 million over three years. Now, as long as he stays relatively healthy, he'll have a chance to make $21.5 million over four years. /rotoworld
November 26, 200322 yr thanks for the update. if Luis doesn't take this he's crazy. rumor had it the Mets weren't offering that much more than the Marlins anyway, & that's before Florida added the 4th year to the offer. if this doesn't get it done, i give up.
November 26, 200322 yr I doubt Luis will find a deal like this on the market. Mets already proved he won't, I dount red sox try goin after him. Only chance Luis has of getting a better offer is if the Cards really want to reunite him and renteria but I don't see it happening. Take it luis don't be like pudge..
November 26, 200322 yr This is good news. Resigning Luiey is a major part of keeping the nucleus together. Him and JP are gonna be tearing the bases next year since Luieys hip will be better. I'm not worried about the Mets at all but a little about the Cards because yeah they might not offer as much money but they have Renteria to offer :confused but I'm not too worried about it.
November 26, 200322 yr FOUR MORE YEARS! FOUR MORE YEARS! Why am I getting flashbacks of my first pep rally.
November 27, 200322 yr am i the only one hesitant about Luis? I dont know if this is money well-spent...
November 27, 200322 yr I'm not sure about this either. He was too hampered by injuries to steal many bases, and he looked like a completely different player in the postseason with all of those strikeouts. If we only needed to offer him $2 million a year, i wouldn't care as much.
November 27, 200322 yr am i the only one hesitant about Luis? I dont know if this is money well-spent... I'm with you...His entire game is his speed because its not like he's got power to keep him going after his speed declines. His defense, hits, and steals all come from speed which is the quickest tool to decline. I'm especially wary of a 4yr deal.
November 27, 200322 yr Author If Castillo Hits Righty he could hit 10 Homers Probably (or close to it). All 6 of his Shots were from the right side this season.

I'm not sure but I think he still lead the league in infield hits. Sure he had a hard time stealing bases this year, but he didn't have to with pierre in front of him. He's the ideal #2 hitter, he can get a bunt down find a hole, you can hit and run with him. Without him I don't think we would able to play that style of baseball that won us the world series.
November 27, 200322 yr All I can say is that I hope this is the final offer from the Fish. I don't want to see us be on a bidding war for Luis and over pay on one player. This is a very fair offer, and if Luis doesn't take it, then we know why he didn't show up at the victory parade. We shall see, we need Luis for sure. And Castillo has a lot more than just speed. Gold Glove D. in addition between him and Pierre, they can take away 15 to 20 pitches in two ABs (it adds ups on pitching counts). We saw it during 2003. When Luis is seeing the ball well, he can foul the ball all night long just to stay alive and draw a walk (walk from Prior on game 6 anyone?)
November 27, 200322 yr Luis Castillo showed this season that he can perform at an All-Star caliber level with or without stealing 40 bases. This is not risk IMO.

I love luis and his contributions over the years to the Fish but we need more production from 2b.

My only concern is the hip, he still be a youngster by the end of the 4th year. However, I'm sure Admin and co know Luis health status better than any of us. And Luis still has upside potential, I feel we still haven't seen the best of him.

He was a great compliment to Pierre and won a gold glove for his defense. What more could you ask for? :banghead
November 27, 200322 yr Farmer fran couldn't agree with you more. Luis and Jp at the top of the order= havoc for opposing team! what other 1-2 punch could you ask for.
November 27, 200322 yr My only concern is the hip That's just stupid. It wasn't a concern and didn't hold back his offensive or defensive production the FIRST year coming off surgery. Why the hell would it effect him two years afterward? That makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever.
November 27, 200322 yr Without Luis you dont get to the world series what? we could get to the WS without luis! we play like a team-we won the WS by everyone helping-if you take one guy out its not going to make a difference. and if we wouldnt be able to win the WS without luis than a lot of people would have gave up already-obviosuly we could do it without him but-i dont think we can win the WS without Pudge-unless we replace him with someone who always does good in the clutch and someone who is a great leader-so hopefully we could keep him-bc without him i dont see us winning the WS-but we could still prob. make it to the playoffs-and Pudge helped out the pitchers alot-and i dont want to get rid of that-we have a young rotation and having Pudge there really helps them out alot-we need a team leader-we get a team leader out of Pudge not Castillo.
