Posted November 8, 201113 yr Just a fun little thing to do because I'm bored. Background The newly christened Miami Marlins are heading into a new stadium in 2012 and everyone is buzzing over what splash your team will make. Expectations are high and promises have been made. This is a make or break offseason with some very high profile agents. Do you go after them and secure a future Hall of Famer? Or do you budget more carefully and build an all around team. The choice is yours! Your Task The payroll has been projected to be around 90MM. Using that projection, say what ideal moves you would want to make and provide an accurate estimation. You may keep, cut, trade, ect. ANY of these players, but try to give a valid reason why. Please post the player's name, position (in lineup), and salary like so - EX. Lineup 1. 3B - Emilio Bonifacio -$2.1MM In the end, total up your salary and see what happens! November 8, 201113 yr Great idea for a thread. Hopefully nobody trades Gaby for Gio Gonzalex straight up. You could also split this into 2 threads: One for discussion and one for posting plans only.
November 8, 201113 yr Author Lineup 1. 3B - Emilio Bonifacio - $2.1MM 2. CF - Yoenis Cespedes - $6MM 3. SS - Hanley Ramirez - $15MM 4. RF - Mike Stanton - $416,000 5. 1B - Gaby Sanchez - $431,000 6. Steve Cishek - $414,000 Total: Approx. $89MM What I Did Signed - Cespedes, Sizemore, Hairston, and Buehrle Traded - A package involving LoMo to the A's for Gio Gonzalez So all in all, I see one of the best lineups in the majors, a meh bench, a stellar 1-4 in the rotation, and a decent bullpen.
November 8, 201113 yr Author @Floridafly, what about Nolasco @Mike, you da man! Haha, I actually just came back to this thread because I forgot to say what happened to him. Trade Nolasco for prospects. I know that's very general, but oh well. We'd probably get one top 'spec and a mid level. And that's being generous since he is due $9MM. I'd probably DFA or non-tender Volstad. Either way, I wouldn't want him in that rotation. Brad Hand saves a few MM and I wouldn't really consider him a downgrade at this point.
November 8, 201113 yr How much does Ryan Webb project to make? I will have him over Ceda. I will do this properly tonight.
November 8, 201113 yr Author How much does Ryan Webb project to make? I will have him over Ceda. I will do this properly tonight. Wow, I completely missed Ryan Webb somehow. He makes $414,000 which is "minimum wage"

Signed: Lopez as bench bat, Cespedes as Internation FA, Buerhle as FA, Jose Reyes as FA. That's a playoff contender at $93.25. Lineup is top heavy, but should be good enough, and it would project to be a really cool defensive team, which helps the pitching staff a lot. It's not ridiculous, but it's well above the allotted 90 million It probably comes out to around $114 million

November 9, 201113 yr Trade Gaby, Nolasco, possibly petersen for Shields This is not happening. Facepalm worthy, practically.

It's not ridiculous, but it's well above the allotted 90 million It probably comes out to around $114 million This would be a walk off grand slam of an offseason. Really hope they are flexible enough to go over 90 mil. It's going to be real curious how much Cespedes will get with all this attention. Would be great if he ended up being a middle-of-the-order type guy. One addition I'd make is Zambrano, but I'd keep Volstad around. Color me curious as hell to see if this nutjob could hold it together under Ozzie. If the Marlins had any other manager, I wouldn't be interested at all. Hell.. you could even put him in the bullpen and let Sanabia get starts in AAA, if worse comes to worse. Also.. Lets say they could get Gio but they were staying firm on a payroll of less than 90 mil.. I would still do this roster minus Buehrle. Yea, rotation and lineup may be top heavy, but they are very, very impressive tops. Being at 82 mil, you could still sign a vet to a one year deal (Bedard?), field a solid rotation, and put yourself in great position for next season's FA class.
November 10, 201113 yr Lineup 1. 3B - Emilio Bonifacio - $2.1MM 2. CF - Yoenis Cespedes - $5MM 3. SS - Hanley Ramirez - $15MM 5. 1B - Prince Fielder - $18MM 4. RF - Mike Stanton - $414,000 6. Steve Cishek (CL) - $414,000 Total Payroll = $93.35MM Trades ------ - Ricky Nolasco for pitching prospects. I have not counted on those prospects being ready for next year. - Gaby Sanchez for Wade Davis. A logical fit IMO. The Rays are looking to clear a rotation spot for Matt Moore and speculation was rife that it was going to be either Shields or Davis. Now that it looks like Shields is staying, Davis is the favorite to go, and at a reasonable 3 years / $9.1 MM for the next 3 years, he fits our budget. Rays are also looking for a cheap first baseman after Kotchman was only signed for 1 year and after having a good season, will command more on the open market. I think this is win-win for both teams. FA's ---- - We sign Cespedes. We finally get the long-term piece in CF with pop, speed and good defense. His position in the line-up can be swapped with LoMo if we find he has more pop, LoMo might be more suited to #2 in the line-up anyway. - We sign Fielder. IMO, his presence would be more important than Reyes. We don't need more speed at the top of the line-up, we need a big bat to wedge between Hanley and Stanton. I've also gone for Fielder over Pujols due to age. - We sign Buehlre. The reliable lefty we've been looking for. Other than that I am happy with our bullpen and if we re-sign Dobbs and Murphy I think we have a pretty damn good bench. I'm a few million over on payroll, not by much though, but I think it's worth it to have the additions of Fielder, Cespedes, Buehrle and Davis.
November 10, 201113 yr I think Cespedes, Fielder and Buehrle will all probably get a few more mil per year... especially Prince.
November 10, 201113 yr I'm signing Cespedes, Darvish (providing he gets posted), Reyes, K-Rod, Vazquez (providing he is willing to pitch again). I figure all of these guys together add up to roughly 50 million in payroll additions. I'm also trading/non tendering Hensley, Nunez, Volstad to free up some cash. Gives us the following C - Buck (I'd trade him if there were any takers) 1B - Sanchez 2B - Infante 3B - Hanley SS - Reyes LF - LoMo CF - Cespedes RF - Stanton SP - Johnson SP - Darvish SP - Sanchez SP - Vazquez SP - Nolasco MRs - Mujica, Webb, Choate, Dunn, Hopper, Cishek Closer - K-Rod
November 11, 201113 yr I think Cespedes, Fielder and Buehrle will all probably get a few more mil per year... especially Prince. I calculated that based on the fact that generally contracts increase as the years do. It's rare to see someone get a 5 year / $100 million deal and it be 5 years @ $20 million each year. It might break down to be 18 / 18 / 20 / 20 / 24 or something like that. Realistically if we sign guys like Buehrle or Fielder, their salaries will increase slightly over the next few years.
