The State of the Marlins' Rotation

Featured Replies

If the marlins want to have a top of the line pitcher, They have to go after Yu Darvish. This guy can pitch and is an absolute stud and a superstar in the making plus he's 25 and 6'5 and a normal delivery compared to other asian pitchers. Also we can create a buzz with our organization internationally and create a new market, This guy is a superstar in japan and his following and media will follow him.

ok so i'm throwing a name out and i'm not sure if its possible or if we have the pieces but what do you think it would take for us to get felix hernandez? seattle is going to be in rebuilding mode for the next couple of seasons and they've developed their new ace in pineda so it might be time for them to trade in felix for pieces that fill other needs. once again i'm just throwing a name out to see what it would take to get him, dont attack me

That's not attack worthy. Relax. :lol

I think the problem is that if they are trying to rebuild, they would want some premium minor league or club controlled talent. I can't imagine any way to get a deal like that done without involving Mike Stanton.

Harold Reynolds says Hanley and some prospects for Felix.

Now that doesn't make any sense to me. Felix is owed a little bit more than Hanley is, but if the motivation to trade Felix for rebuilding purposes, it would be silly to swap out one expensive contract for another expensive contract. Both players are signed through 2014.

I agree with the Darvish approach. But the main issue is that we would have to beat the Yankees in a blind bid - which seems unlikely. The Yanks are really high on Darvish as well.

I wasn't being serious about trading Hanley. I know it was brought up earlier when we signed Reyes and he kept going on about it and people were laughing.

If we get Gio would he be our 2?

If you replace Volstad's 5.00 ERA with a 4.00 ERA, the starter's total ERA goes down by 0.2, which is obviously a huge difference. Wilson would have been likely to post an ERA around 3.00, which would have lowered it by 0.4, which is why it sucks so bad to have missed out on him.

Also keep in mind that starters throw around 900-100 innings, I'd guess? So, a 0.2 difference in team ERA is a little more than a 2-win difference, since with the decreased runs scored make a win actually a little under 10 runs now according to Fangraphs.

I was listening to MLB radio the other day (I believe it was the Kevin Kennedy and Jim Duquette show) and they were saying that the Mariners will have to reevaluate their future plans based on what Anaheim just pulled off. especially, if they fail to sign Prince. I think they were implying that if they couldn't compete this year in the division it may behoove them to trade Felix. They also joked that Cashman has sent a phone to the Mariners GM with only his number in it. I definitely believe that the Yankees will overpay to get King Felix if he is available. Don't get me wrong, I would love him in a Miami Uni, but not at the expense of competeing with the Yankees, in terms of prospects, to get him.

The Marlins can't and won't win a bidding war with prospects.

Our biggest asset right now is our cash (I still can't believe I'm saying this) and we need to go out and aggressively bid on Darvish. If we win the right to negotiate a contract, yet fail to ink him for some reason, we get all the $ returned to us.

If we don't win the bid, then sit tight until the trade deadline when some club is looking to move an expensive pitcher mainly for salary reasons. Wandy Rodriguez could fit the bill.

Agree. But if we were willing to go 100 mill for c.j then the money issue shouldn't be an issue. Also some would say look at dice-k and how he performed but he had to pitch in the a.l especially in the toughest a.l division, So a move to the n.l for Darvish could help him perform better

how come nobody is taking into account that our infield defense should be better this year? This should help out guys like volstad who is a groundball pitcher. I'm not saying this will make our pitchers cy winners but it should help their numbers.....am i wrong in thinking this way?

True, But remains to see how hanley performs at 3rd

JJ- 2.50

Sanchez- 3.50

Buehrle- 3.75

Nolasco- 4.00

Volstad-5.00

This is possible. And this is an above average rotation. It's era comes out to 3.75. This would put us in the top 10 in baseball.

It's possible, but probably too blindly optimistic. Nolasco hasn't put an ERA under 4.50 over the past three seasons. Anibal has average around a 3.66 over the past three seasons. An ERA around 3.50 is not impossible, but still incredibly generous. And that's not even addressing the concerns of Johnson's health.

We're not here to discuss health issues. We're here to discuss what we expect them to do.

JJ- 2.50

Buehrle-3.50

Sanchez-3.66

Nolasco-4.50

Volstad-5

Comes out to 3.832..which is 10th in baseball.

Ideally you would want the guys with better ERA's to be pitching more innings, stating that these are what the projected era's will be doesnt mean all there innings pitch will be equal. If Johnson and Buehrle throw more innings than Nolasco and Volstad (hopefully) than the combined ERA will be less than 3.832.

A blind bid for the right to talk to Darvish is too risky. I'm against it.

I'm pretty sure you get the bid back if no contract can be consummated.

I have a personal bias for Darvish though, so I hope we do go after him, risk and all.

After seeing his video and stats, it's hard not to like Darvish.

I'd love to see him in this rotation for years to come. Hell, I'd probably buy a jersey.

I honestly don't see nolasco having an era above 4.3. I don't see it happening. He has good stuff, didn't have a good year but some people are seriously over reacting on one year

state of the rotation right now?

we simply replaced Vazquez with Buehrle. JJ's probably going to get injured again, and our rotation's going to suck again

agreed ... except that JJ hopefully doesnt go down with an injury.

I'm still ok with trying to trade for Wade Davis

I don't understand the fuss over Wade Davis or how he would be an upgrade in our rotation. Not trying to be rude or anything. It's just that his peripherals aren't great and had an ERA of about 4.50 last season.
