December 10, 201114 yr If we stay healthy, I think our rotation is average with upside. The bullpen is above average. The offense is definitely above-average when healthy, even if Hanley never gets back to his .900+ OPS. And the defense should be slightly below average overall. So, we're an above-average team in my opinion. A couple of breaks and/or avoid too many injuries, and we could easily be one of the 2 wild cards. And once you're in the playoffs, anything can happen. If we add another top-end pitcher next offseason, we have a chance to be a 90+ win team even without catching too many breaks.
December 10, 201114 yr a lot of people forget nolasco was 15-8 a couple seasons ago so if we can get rid of volstad for a maholm, kuroda, or acquire gio that'll be a sick rotation. jj, mark, anibal, gio, ricky
December 10, 201114 yr Wouldn't it be nice to bring in livan as the fifth Not sure if srs? Deadly serious

I always question W-L records
December 10, 201114 yr You have to figure that Alex Sanabia will push Volstad for the 5th spot. Sanabia with the ERA 5.79 this past Arizona fall league?
December 10, 201114 yr Go after Dempster... only has one year left on his deal so we could go after a SP next season. Will give 200 IP, strike out 200 and give 20 quality starts. Last year his numbers were inflated by an awful 1st month but finished with 1 less QS than Buehrle. If we're done spending on the offense, I'd take on 10 mil of his remaining 14 if it meant we didn't have to give up any worthwhile pieces. He'd fit in very nice at the bottom of the rotation.. getting 200 IP from your #4-5 SP would be a luxury.
December 10, 201114 yr I would like Ryan Dempster as a Marlin. I like this idea ALOT! those innings pitched are what I would look for in my #5 pitcher. And we go after a FA next year. I would do this and still look to replace nolasco.
December 10, 201114 yr i have no issue with nolasco at number 4 but hes making way too much. either way with everyone here saying that we needed major upgrades to our rotation, 80% of the rotation returning is not a major upgrade. we need another established number 2 or 3 starter. would very much like gavin floyd who has great stuff and is 4 million cheaper than nolasco over the next two years.
December 10, 201114 yr state of the rotation right now? we simply replaced Vazquez with Buehrle. JJ's probably going to get injured again, and our rotation's going to suck again
December 10, 201114 yr The team definitely needs at least another established arm in the rotation. There's too many questions with health with JJ and Anibal. Plus Ricky and Volstad being so inconsistent, it's way too much that has to go right for this rotation to succeed....
December 11, 201114 yr If we stay healthy, I think our rotation is average with upside. I played with some numbers, and I think this is a little too optimistic. Best case scenario is that the Marlins get 200 IP from each of their 1 to 4 starters. That assumes that you get the 2010 version of Josh Johnson for the whole season (2.30 ERA) and the 2-5 starters basically repeat their 2011 numbers. Put all of that together and you get a team ERA of around 3.80, which is roughly about what I would consider the median for NL rotations in 2011. If Johnson gives you 200 IP, but that ERA slides back to around 3.20, you have a team ERA around 4.05, which is a tad below average. If Buehrle also gives you an ERA around 4.00 (he posted a 4.28 ERA in 2010), it's definitely a below average rotation. I would say that if everything goes well, the rotation is average at best with little upside. That isn't good enough for me. They need to find someone better than Nolasco/Volstad.
December 11, 201114 yr Wouldn't mind Dempster back Why? He sucked last year and will be 35 this season. I think he's probably in decline and would be more of a lateral move than anything else. The Marlins really need another good starter (someone certain to post an ERA under 4.00), especially with Johnson's health issues.

December 11, 201114 yr What I'm basically saying is that not every need SHOULD be fixed this offseason, because better opportunities will present itself down the road. Two new starters are dire needs; there's no excuse for not addressing that this offseason. Especially not at the expense of frivolous things like Heath Bell, which was far from a pressing need.

Cubs and Sox are two teams who are primed to blow up their roster.. they're logical teams to look at players. You've been increasingly negative the past few days... its getting old. Seems like every other sentence out of your mouth involves poo-pooing the heath bell signing. You don't like it.... we get it.
December 11, 201114 yr Wow. Settle down. I was just curious because it seems odd that you keep lobbying for guys like Danks, Zambrano, Dempster, Garza, and Castro much more frequently than players from other teams. It's kind of bizarre. And if you haven't noticed, I'm far from the only person who has some issues with the Bell signing. And it is a relevant point of discussion when we are talking about the holes that need to be filled with limited funds, which seem to result in the neglect of the rotation.

This is an above average rotation, with huge upside coming from Nolasco. The average ERA in the MLB is 4.08, and in the NL it's 3.95. This rotation with a healthy JJ should finish around 3.80-3.85. That would put us around 11-15. If everything goes right, this is a top 10 rotation.
December 11, 201114 yr There's absolutely nothing wrong with Mark Buehrle and Anibal Sanchez being the #'s 2/3. Anibal Sanchez is one of the most underrated pitchers in baseball. Also, for all the sh*t Nolasco gets, he had two really bad starts last year where he gave up 20 ER's in 4.1 innings. Take away those two horrendous starts, and he had a 3.88 ERA in his other 31 starts. All in all, he gave 206 innings, which is valuable as well. He's a fine #4; it would be phenomenal if he ends up being the #5. ^Especially with our bullpen.
December 11, 201114 yr The problem is that he's been having those horrid outings the past 3 seasons. He needs to miss more bats like he used to.
