March 16, 201214 yr He had one rough outing, a dead arm issue, and pitched better yesterday. It appears that he was released because his contract would become partially guaranteed tomorrow. He'll catch on somewhere and I hope he excels as a situational lefty. He did very well vs lefties in 2011.
March 16, 201214 yr Will still have Choate right? Is he injured right now? I havent heard anything really mentioned about him.
March 16, 201214 yr Sadly I'm not surprised this happened. Although Dontrelle pitched a scoreless inning with only a walk yesterday in a split squad game in Clearwater, a source bluntly told me on Wednesday that the Phillies just weren't liking what they were seeing from him at all. On the flip side, Juan Pierre had two hits, two runs and two RBIs for the other split squad in Port Charlotte, leading off and playing center field. He's a non-roster invitee, but he looked like vintage JP out there. All those hits, runs and RBIs came in the first two innings against Wade Davis (my guess is he's the Ray who will be shafted out of the rotation).
March 16, 201214 yr There isn't room in the Marlins pen for Willis. There's no reason not to take him on a minor league deal, though.
March 16, 201214 yr Good. I hope he pitches in 2012 and wins Comeback Player of the Year... Anywhere but the NL East.
March 16, 201214 yr Wow, apparently he earned $139,000 just to pitch those 2.2 innings. I know he's a nice guy and all, but earning that much money for doing very little makes it hard to have much sympathy for him.
March 16, 201214 yr Maybe it's time for him to become a hitter. Been saying that the last couple of years, certainly hope he catches on somewhere
March 17, 201214 yr Probably my favorite player to ever play the game. I wish the Marlins would just give this guy a spot somewhere. How can it hurt?
March 20, 201214 yr Orioles signed LHP Dontrelle Willis to a minor league contract. Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports that it's a split contract worth $700,000 for time spent in the majors. Willis was released by the Phillies last week after allowing five runs over 2 2/3 innings while walking four and striking out none during Grapefruit League play. It's not clear if the Orioles will use him as a starter or reliever, but he's likely to begin the season in the minors.
