April 2, 201214 yr Because I am...he seems to have great movement on his pitches, command the strike zone really well, and have all the goods to be a solid 3, maybe a borderline number 2 but he just seems to be lacking something...
April 2, 201214 yr You mean he's been the same Ricky Nolasco since 2006? I think it's clear many of us started to worry about Ricky when he couldn't miss bats anymore.
April 2, 201214 yr He's always been iffy, though. He either gets lit up or strikes out a ton. Sometimes both in the same game.
April 2, 201214 yr He's always been iffy, though. He either gets lit up or strikes out a ton. Sometimes both in the same game. Because he has a flatter fastball and throws too many strikes. Give him some credit, though. We did just face the Yankees, and Cy Young winner C.C. Sabathia didn't look much better.

He seemed to get flustered, though, after Kearns misplayed that one ball that allowed runners on 2nd and 3rd. He couldn't get into any rhythm after that. I can't give him any credit what-so-ever, to be honest.
April 2, 201214 yr His problem is he gives up way too many souvenirs to fans sitting in cheap seats...
April 2, 201214 yr Jekyll and Hyde. He'll give up 4 or 5 runs one day and the next strike out 16 batters. He's worth keeping though in my opinion
April 2, 201214 yr Author I just don't know if he's worth keeping at his price tag...I think a Niemann or Wade Davis could bring us the same results, for far less money...

April 2, 201214 yr I think the rotation will be adjusted after the ASB- JJ, Buerle, Zambrano, Sanchez, Nolasco. He's got the potential, hopefully a pennet race can unleash it like it did for Beckett.
April 2, 201214 yr No. He is what he is; an inconsistent pitcher who might regress considering his declining K rate/Swstr%.
April 2, 201214 yr Author I think we would've been better off trading Gaby to TB for Wade Davis, an idea that was floating during the time we were going hard after Pujols, and then we would've moved LoMo to 1st and pin Cogz or whomever as the everyday LF...

So you would have essentially replaced Nolasco with Davis, a move that changes nothing, and then replaced Gaby with Coghlan, costing us offense. Then you would have done what with Nolasco? Thankfully you aren't running our team, or you would have made a completely uneccessary move that would have hurt our team overall.

The actual order of the rotation in regular season games really doesn't mean anything. I'm not saying they won't switch it up, but it really has no consequence or impact on anything.

April 2, 201214 yr No. He is what he is; an inconsistent pitcher who might regress considering his declining K rate/Swstr%. On the flipside, given his career-best GB rate last year, he could be consciously changing his approach to pitching. We're dealing with one-year sample sizes, so it's too early to say. I'll say he's a pitcher who pitches better than his final numbers may indicate. He generally has a few games where he blows up irreparably (20 runs in 4.1 innings in two starts last year) that raise his ERA by about .9 runs total on the year. Now, I'm not saying those two games don't matter. They obviously do. They are guaranteed losses, which is an issue. When they account for essentially 20% of the earned runs he gave up in a season, it's probably fair to say that their impact is overblown.

I don't mind the couple of bad games either I guess if that's who he is. I'm just saying that's probably what he'll do again because I don't think more contact is a better strategy for him; when he gets hit, he tends to get hit hard. He had an LD% of ~24 last year.
April 2, 201214 yr Concerned about Ricky? I'm more concerned about Kearns who makes Coghlan look like a genius in LF.
April 2, 201214 yr Really tired of him after last season. I was hoping we would trade his overpaid salary. He's on the books next year for 11.5 million.
April 2, 201214 yr He had an LD% of ~24 last year. And, along with that, a career high GB% and FB%. Can't just take one number out of context.
