Erick
Well... Bell's fastball was down in velocity tonight, so was Ricky's. It all worked out. Nolasco averages 89.4 on his fastball for the season. He doesn't strike people out anymore, it seems like, by design. He pitches to contact and gets more groundballs now. I don't know what his average velocity was tonight, but it probably wasn't far off from that. Bell throwing 91 is much more of a concern. Marlins
LOL...Think we've gotten "screwed" by the Bell more than we've been "saved" by it...

canada-marlin24
Well... Bell's fastball was down in velocity tonight, so was Ricky's. It all worked out. I think bell was trying to locate more but Ricky's fastball is definitely not what it used to be. When he came up and through 2008-2009 he was at 92-94 regularly. Now he barely touches 91. But hey if he pitches like that no problem but I would like to see him get those 2-3 mph back. Maybe Josh can get the 6 mph he's missing. Don't get where it went. I usually see 2-seam/sinkers/cutters be a couple MPH slower than the 4 seam due to the grip and rotation.

Nolasco's never thrown 92-94 regularly in his life. His season high average velocity on his fastball is 91.5, both in 2006 and 2009. He's never been a power pitcher. He's taking off his fastball which, again, seems to be by design. He's been getting more groundball outs since last year and that has continued this year. Bell throwing 91 is bad because he brings it at 94 regularly. It sucks that we've apparently paid 27 million dollars to him so he can pitch to contact for 50-60 innings. The last thing you want from your well-paid high-leverage reliever is him pitching to contact often. As for Josh Johnson, he's not off by 6 mph. The 6 mph was an exaggeration but he was throwing 91-92 when he's normally at 95-97. Ricky's average fastball may be 91.5 in those years but he could easily reach back for 93-94 when he wanted. Don't know if he can do that now unless the 89-90 he's throwing is indeed by design.

I think you'd see a bigger differential with a cutter, but for whatever reason I always threw my 2-seamer slightly faster than my 4-seam in high school. On another note, the Bell situation is pretty troubling. I was annoyed to see Ozzie bring him in for the 9th. This is where the conventional out-dated manager frame of mind may actually hurt significantly.
Jonny Ramos
91 MPH on Bell's fastball. Im pretty sure he didn't want to walk anybody- from now on, expect to see his fastball at the low 90's. If you see it go up to 94-95... expect a blown save.

Fishcrazy
Bell could be effective with a 91-92 fastball *if* he can start throwing his breaking ball again. Locating his BB has been as much of a problem has the lower velocity. That thing has been junk all year, don't think he's actually thrown a good one more than 2-3 times yet. Fishcrazy
and how about Ricky 4-0 0.87 era in 4 starts at AT&T Park.
FloridaMarlinsForever
just watched the game, offence is still slow, Boni and Reyes need to think about bunting to get on base more, put pressure on the pitcher, Heath bell came very close to blowing it, bad call on the ump in relation to that foul ball. Luck won us this game

Hammerhead
I guess getting saves is something Bell only does on the west coast. Nah, I kid. Hopefully this is the start of him being himself.

canada-marlin24
does bell have a changeup? at the game on monday i saw a pitch at 86 and it certainly looked like one. quite honestly he needs one because without a third pitch and a breaking ball he hasnt been throwing for strikes we could have a problem. i want to see the 94-96 heath bell moving the ball around the the plate and then snapping off the breaking ball when you least expect it. thats how he saved games. but a changeup would really help. NOTtheILMarlins
Glad we won, glad Hanley and Stanton contributed. Not happy about scoring only 2 runs and I still don't think Bell looks good pitching to save the game, give it a few more save ops before he blows another one, no swings and misses and no strikeouts.
