May 25, 201214 yr He has a .203 BABIP. He is hitting for power and walking. He will likely turn it around. The team has money invested in him, and Brett Hayes has absolutely no track record of any sort of consistent production. You have to give Buck the chance to turn it around, when there are signs that he will, because the upside is higher with him than Hayes. But it is about you not liking John Buck. You've done this thing a bunch of times. We get it. Agreed on Hayes and that's why I think Buck should still get a chance... two days out of the week. If the guy hasn't shown anything by the ASB (and I don't think he will but if you want to use the BABIP argument, fine), you have to look elsewhere. You can't contend with a catcher (and yes I know it's not a heavy offensive spot) or any positional player that hits sub .200 and doesn't provide anything spectacular on defense.
May 25, 201214 yr Brett Hayes starting five days a week is an awesome idea. Better than starting a guy who isn't providing anything five days out of the week.
May 25, 201214 yr There is a difference between what a guy has done and what you think he will do moving forward.
May 25, 201214 yr There is a difference between what a guy has done and what you think he will do moving forward. So he hasn't done anything for more than a year but you think he will going forward. In a park that suppresses the only thing he has gotten CLOSE to consistently contributing: a little bit of pop. Makes sense.
May 25, 201214 yr You talk about him like he was the worst player in the league last season. He had a .683 in a league where the average catcher had a .708 OPS. You're not being rational if you think he did "nothing" last season. Again, we get it. You don't like John Buck.

May 25, 201214 yr So he hasn't done anything for more than a year but you think he will going forward. In a park that suppresses the only thing he has gotten CLOSE to consistently contributing: a little bit of pop. Makes sense. He has had one of the best walk rates on the team since last year while providing above average pop. You're killing a guy because his BABIP is low. The lowest BABIP over the last five seasons is Andruw Jones at .242. His BABIP is unsustainably low. He is providing much more in the way of secondary skills than Hayes. When you're basing your entire argument on something that history has shown is unsustainable, you're probably going to end up wrong. You can keep this crusade up, but the Marlins are pinning their hopes on the guy with higher upside. Playing Brett Hayes 5x a week definitely isn't going to make this team a contender. John Buck figuring things out might help. You go with the high upside guy. Every time.
May 25, 201214 yr Benched your argument is ridiculously played out. You hate him. He's here. Eventually, he won't be. Moving on
May 25, 201214 yr Buck was extremely overrated when we picked him up because of the year he had in Toronto. We gambled and lost, oh well it happens.
May 25, 201214 yr Team ERA when Buck is catching: 3.15 Team ERA when Hayes is catching: 4.38 Record this month when Buck catching: 12-3 Record this month when Hayes catching: 4-3 (and probably 4-4 after tonight) On base % Buck : .306 On base % Hayes : 326
May 25, 201214 yr True Buck isn't getting the job done with the bat, but it would be rediculous to think that starting Brett Hayes on a regular basis would help this team.
May 25, 201214 yr Hayes is having a great game tonight. So great that if John Buck were doing the same thing, there would probably be a couple more threads about John Buck.

Brett Hayes is so bad that he's worse than Miguel Olivo.
May 25, 201214 yr Brett Hayes' OPS is now all of .048 points higher than Buck's despite having a BABIP of roughly double.
May 26, 201214 yr Brett Hayes' OPS is now all of .048 points higher than Buck's despite having a BABIP of roughly double. Like I said, I never said he was the long term answer at all. He's not good either. I'd give him a few more starts a week, though, until Buck hopefully gets his sh*t together.

He's not good either. I'd give him a few more starts a week, though, until Buck hopefully gets his sh*t together. But Hayes does not "have his sh*t together." So how is that an answer? Actually, what makes your argument even worse is that this is Hayes with his sh*t together. This is not Hayes in a slump. This is not Hayes with bad luck. This is Brett Hayes: fully realized. At least with Buck, there is some upside based on how he has played in the past and the skills he has shown this season. For Brett Hayes, this is who he is. This is like Heat fans who wanted to start crappy Norris Cole simply because he isn't Mario Chalmers. I hate that. Somebody does not deserve to play simply by virtue of not being the other guy. You play the guy who gives you the best chance to win moving forward.
June 13, 201214 yr Bump. Middle of June and the worst catcher in the history of this franchise is still batting in the 160s. Still waiting for him to "come around"....
June 13, 201214 yr Buck could've stopped the bleeding in the 7th, but didn't catch that foul popup. Granted, it was not a routine play, but it is a play that is made by winners. He should've basket caught it, rather than slapping at it overhand. Game changer it was.
June 13, 201214 yr I miss Ronny Paulino. I know he had some issues with diet pills that got him suspended at the end of the season, but he was the best catcher we've had in recent years. We should have never given him away like that. Paulino's batting average was around .280 and he was a great catcher.
June 13, 201214 yr John Buck is the worst starting player in baseball period. He's absolutely brutal and it's an embarrassment that we have no one to replace him. If you fail to hit .200 as a major league hitter and this year he isn't even close to that then you should be playing in the Mexican penal league... The dude is a bum and there is absolutely no argument against that.
