What's terrible is that you've already reached a conclusion on a guy you've never even seen pitch. Saying a 25-year old reliever who's put up good K #'s in the minors definitely doesn't have the stuff to pitch in the big leagues seems absurd. Most people in the game who have actually watched him pitch seem to think he could pitch in a big league bullpen this year as a 7th/8th inning guy.

 

 

 

That's not what Pitch FX data says about Cishek--93.73 MPH fastball and 93.45 MPH sinker this season. I have no idea where you get 92 MPH from. His career average on his fastball is 93.67.

 

All I said was that his stuff doesn't appear to be impressive. Pitch FX data goes a long way toward informing that opinion.

I was looking at Brooks baseball, which I tend to regard as being more reliable because it's more exclusively a pitch FX site. And I still don't understand the comparison. Cishek doesn't rely on a fastball as a dominant pitch. Ames does (he throws it more than 60% of the time). I can't think of too many solid major league relievers who throw a 90 MPH fastball >60% of the time as their dominant pitch and have had much success. If he had a tendency to mix in quality secondary pitches with greater frequency, I'd be more optimistic, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

 

There are guys like Luke Gregerson and Huston Street who don't throw hard and have had a lot of success in relief, but they aren't primarily relying on a fastball. Sinkerballers are different kinds of pitchers.

I'd agree with what your saying except for 2 things, our payroll is 36MM, it's not like we couldn't throw some extra money around for better prospects.
