Trae Turner or Jacob Gatewood?

The Marlins have 3 of the top 50 picks of the draft. This is a great opportunity,we have been there before but it seems to never have worked out for the Marlins (2005 we had 4 of the top 50).

We have no SS of impact in the Minors

We have no power-hitting First basemen

We have one marginal catching prospect (not counting Brantly)

We can get the best position player in the Draft

I say lets do it!... Lets get the best SS in the draft

lets get a Joey Votto type of First baseman

and lets get an upper tier catching prospect

If people want pitching go get it in the 3rd round, there will still be some there I am sure of it

It may not be the next Jose Fernandez but may very well could be the next Josh Johnson

Lets not have to pick other organizations of their talent lets develop it ourself

I don't know how many people understand what Trea Turner would bring to the Marlins

Usually when we hear the term stolen base it is about the Marlins keeping other teams from doing it...The last stolen base threat we had was a 40 y/o Juan Pierre! The Marlins offense is so station to station that it is almost surprising when a player scores from 2nd base with a hit (Well it actually almost surprising when they score period). I know this is a different era of baseball and a lot of people are not old enough to remember these name:

Lou Brock

Ricky Henderson

Tim Raines

Ron LeFlore

Maury Wills

Omar Moreno

Willie Wilson

Micky Rivers

These players were poison to other team pitchers They would get a walk and be on 2nd base automatically and before they knew it these players were on 3rd base. They messed up pitchers minds so badly that often they would fall apart for the next few batter. These players could lay a bunt at any time so they were hell for infielders...The worst thing is you cannot shut down speed...Trea Turner would provide this to a Marlins lineup, no one else in this draft does that. He also has amazing range as a SS. It's unlikely he will hit 30 HR's in a season but if he steals bases like he has at NC St he would score more runs with his legs then anyone else

That type of production would be nice but the question is what is more valuable. I thin this team needs power and OPS production and a 'Joey Votto type' as you say (Not saying Jackson or Davidson will be that) is more productive than a Juan Pierre.

I hear Alex Jackson comparisons to Bryce Harper and Wil Myers. Does he have that type of potential? Also, Trea Turner has great speed, but I've heard conflicting reports on his defense. And, who would he be compared to in the MLB? Is Jose Reyes accurate? But I also heard that for a guy that like to run alot and has great speed Turner doesn't seem to bunt or hit the ball to the ground too much. He has a uppercut swing which IMO isn't necessarily bad, but it can keep him from stealing as much bases, or using his speed to leg out infield singles as expected at the big league level. The easiest out to make is arguably the infield flyball.

actually I believe they have 4 of the first 43 picks.

And five in the first 77. Seven in the first 108.

Everything I have read says the contrary in fact he does bunt quite a bit His OBP last year was .455. I haven't heard anything about having an uppercut swing if you find anything I would love to read it, BTW before his ankle injury last year his OBP was

.522 His OBP improved from his rookie year even with the injury His defense rated from above average to outstanding His range is Ozzie Smith-like with an above average arm. He could play SS in the majors right now. Please look him up on youtube

This is a video of him bunting and running to first base (3.42 seconds from home to first)

More on Trea Turner...

"scouting reports note he has a very good eye and his number at NC State bear this out. Now, I've seen Trea multiple times, but I actually haven't looked closely at Pitch recognition issues, focusing on big bucket items like speed, swing and Defense, but consensus among scouting reports I've read seem to peg him as one of the most advanced hitters in the draft. His power might max out as average, but he'll have elite speed and an average to above average hit tool to allow him to utilize his speed. Next we'll look at Defense.

Defense isn't sexy, so there aren't many videos to show on it. Suffice it to say that Turner has the arm to play Third, an easy plus arm. The speed and footwork for Short (He's fairly new to short, but he's capable of showstopping plays like the two below courtesy of NC State Athletics. You'll notice he makes the second play on the opposite side of Second.) and he could ultimately handle pretty much any spot on the field. There are no scouting concerns about him staying at Short as a pro, and even a move to Third would not be an issue given his arm."

"Tool box check:

Power: Below average, but should be enough to keep Pitchers from just pounding the strike zone without worrying about giving up an XBH.

Hit: A tick above average, but with potential to be a plus tool.

Arm: Above average, maybe plus. Plenty for 3rd or Center Field, though it's unlikely he'd get moved off SS, because...

Defense: This has potential to be a plus tool to even elite. He has the speed, instincts and arm for the position. The only reason for a team to move him off this spot is if they already have an Andrelton Simmons, Francisco Lindor, Jurickson Profar level Defender at that spot. Even then, tough call.

Speed: This is absolutely an elite tool. Fastest guy in the draft. If I had to comp him to someone (and I hate comps usually), he's most like Jose Reyes, though I like his Defense more"

Another scouting report on Trea Turner ScoutingBaseball.com...

"Trea Turner has taken a long path to likely top 10 pick and possible #1 overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft. He was a little-known late riser as a senior from a south Florida high school that passed on a six figure offer from the Pirates as a 20th round pick. I talked to him earlier this season after a solid game early in his return from an ankle injury. He described how he knew he was just a physically weaker, slap-hitting, one dimensional prospect in high school that couldn't get calls returned from his dream school, Florida State. Some elite athletes aren't developed when they turn 18 and especially the slim-bodied, up-the-middle type athletes often have to add some bulk and develop physically before it all comes together.

Turner was a standout as a freshman playing third base and hitting .336/.432/.459 with more walks than strikeouts and going 57-for-61 on stolen bases. While he's missed some time as a sophomore, he's taken another step forward, hitting .393/.476/.613 with 29 BB, 21 K and 23-for-28 on the bases. The difference is this year Turner has been playing shortstop and he's gotten stronger and smoother as an athlete. He's an 80 runner that even coming off an ankle injury has the actions and lateral quickness to stick at shortstop long-term where his above average to plus arm plays. He's a fluid athlete with a smooth swing and a good sense of the strike zone, leaving his only weakness being his lack of raw power. His game power is developed thanks to his sound swing and advanced approach but his power ceiling is in the low double digits annually, which is below average but more than enough given his well-rounded tools and polish.

Without much reservation and despite what's looking like a very strong prep class, Turner is the #1 player on my board for the 2014 Draft. I was told by some sources before I saw Turner that I'd like him more than the much more heralded N.C. State LHP Carlos Rodon (broken down here) and I found it hard to believe, but they were absolutely correct. In this situation, I've talked to the player a good bit and to some scouts that know him as well and he earns raves for his makeup. He's also a great interview, so seriously go listen to that episode of the podcast because this guy is going to be a star".

Average hit tool? I thought it was above average. He doesn't look as good now

With potential to be a Plus tool...This article was written in April of last year he was just getting over his injury...He actually had a great year afterwards

BTW the scout reports feeling Turner would end up the overall number 1 draft pick giving him a rating equivalent to Kris Bryant don't confuse it not that he is like Kris Bryant, He just rated him that highly

Well, if he does go #1 overall, then thanks for Rodon, Houston!

If they go with Turner, then maybe they could move him to the outfield and allow Correa to stay at short. Dominguez seems to be doing OK at third for them there (combined offense/defense) and they've got Brett Wallace for first base, I suppose.

Shoot, I could see them going with Turner, why not? Put him in right field. Fowler/Springer/Turner would be a pretty good trio.

And then we get Rodon and have Jose, Heaney, and Rodon in one rotation #Jizz

I was listening to the Podcast and the scouts of Scoutingbaseball.com saw Rodon on a bad day he lost almost 10 miles per hr on his fastball from the 1st to the 2nd inning and afterwards they interviewed him and he indicated having tightening of his shoulder and they were concerned that maybe a red flag but again this was in April of last year

Here is the report on Rodon and his list of top pitchers

if you note it clearly stated that Rodon was scouted in March 2013

and that he could still become the top pitcher in the draft

http://sbb.scout.com/2/1291189.html

Jeff Hoffman might be the best prospect in this draft class. Most mocks have the Marllins picking him, but he can very well go #1 to Houston by June. If Hoffman performs to his capabilities then Marlins will take one of Rodon/Hoffman (whichever falls to #2)

Great in-depth article/scouting report on Jacob Gatewood

The raw ability and power is there but there is a lot developing that he requires

BTW He looks more like corner infielder in his fielding video, he just seems a little stiff IMO

http://projectprospect.com/article/2014/02/04/2014-mlb-draft-jacob-gatewood-hitter-profile

I'm all for a toolsy prospect, but Gatewood probably wont stick at short, and Miami will have Moran at third.

I want Jackson or Davidson, unless they take Hoffman, but ill live with Trea.

This is what TTF writes about Trea Turner

Trea Turner, SS, NC State

Turner, a 6’-1 right-hander, is a fantastic defender with outstanding range and a strong arm. His elite speed, advanced approach at the plate and ability to drive the ball to all fields make him one of the more exciting players in college and, once he gets on base, don’t blink. Over 56 games as a sophomore, he hit .368/.455/.553 with 30 stolen bases and drew 38 walks to just 30 strikeouts. He also hit seven home runs, showing developing power

BTW Hoffman is the hottest pitcher in College Baseball right now

4 seamer at 98MPH

Plus Slider

Plus Curve

rapidly improving changeup

Rodon is off to a somewhat slow start, but still pitching well

1-2 2.12 ERA 23 Ks /21 Innings pitched

Funny thing is that his worse outing was in his only win of the season

NC St is 10-2 and he was the pitcher of record for both losses

I still think Rodon being a Southpaw will still be the 1st picher drafted

Exciting. Looks like there are two super premier college arms available, and the Marlins will have a shot at one.

I still would prefer a hitter here, but can't be upset about Rodon or Hoffman.

Idea. lets draft A. J. Reed from kentucky(LHP/1B). He has stuff, and assuming he continues to hit bombs out at an unexpected rate he will have power plus he walks. He is a non risk

What have you guys heard about Brandon Finnegan? He's a lefty, a junior at TCU, fastball sits between 90-95, has an improving slider and an average change with some fade. Currently has 33 Ks in 20.2 innings.

I'm not saying take him #2 overall, that'll be Hoffman or Rodon, but we do have the #36 pick and #39 pick ... what if we took him at #36?
