June 10, 201412 yr http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2089667-2014-mlb-draft-grades-final-report-cards-for-all-30-teams/page/16 Grade: B+ The Miami Marlins were happy to grab RHP Tyler Kolek, the draft's hardest thrower, with the second overall pick on Day 1, but they followed the pickup with a pair of questionable selections in defense-oriented catcher Blake Anderson (No. 36) and ultra-athletic SS Justin Twine (No. 43). Miami continued to grab high-end athletes on Day 2 of the draft, including Arkansas 2B Brian Anderson (third round), California prep CF Casey Soltis (fifth) and a potential steal in OF Stone Garrett (eighth). They also snuck in a pair of potential back-end starters at the end of the day, selecting Oregon State LHP Ben Wetzler in the ninth round followed by Texas LHP Dillon Peters in the 10th. Day 3 of the draft saw the Marlins take a flier on several notable prep prospects in RHP Nick White (11th), Puerto Rican catcher Roy Morales (12th), SS Zach Sullivan (14th) and RHP Jordan Holloway (20th).
June 10, 201412 yr 6'6 270+? I thought Kolek was 6'5 245. Damn, Keith Law, don't make him feel fat. I think the "+" is a bit much, but he is definitely an NFL tight end. He looks like he's about Josh Johnson's size.
June 10, 201412 yr I've been 6'5" 220 for decades. When you're a #2 pick, 102 mph, 18 year-old fire-baller, you grow an inch and 25 pounds in a week. :lol

June 12, 201412 yr According to Frisaro, the fish are very close to signing Kolek. Have him take Turner's spot
June 16, 201412 yr clarkspencer @clarkspencer #marlins Michael Hill said all slot $$ saved with higher Draft picks applied to lower picks and team's entire allotment will be spent. Sounds good but lets see if this is true. If it is then I don't understand their strategy. If you are going to spend all of the allotted money then why reach for prospects at the top of the draft? Either way, let's see if they do spend all of the money. Anyone know who these hard to sign later picks might be?
June 16, 201412 yr There were a duo of high schoolers in the early 20s...DJ King, a SS in round 21 and Mitch Robinson, a 3B in round 22, who I assume is who they are referring to. They both want 5-10 round money IIRC.

Either way, let's see if they do spend all of the money. Anyone know who these hard to sign later picks might be? They didn't "reach" for prospects at the top of the draft. They took the guys they liked the best and were still able to save the money because they knew the signability. Just because Baseball America and other pundits had them reaching doesn't make it fact. The Kolek pick speaks for itself. There were several clubs on Blake Anderson in the top 2 rounds, and most likely would have been taken by Pittsburgh at 39 and certainly no later than 60 by Tampa, if not Cincinnati at 58. At 43, they got the best athlete in the draft in Justin Twine. There's no guarantee they will pan out but at least they took the kids they wanted and were still able to save money to spend elsewhere.

That could be. I am not sure what your sources are but from everything I read they seemed to have been reaching. I know they overhauled the scouting department last year and got some reputable guys working for them so maybe those were the players they had pegged all along. Not sure. Only time will tell if they were right.
