June 6, 201412 yr Now that I've been variously claimed to be Samson, Loria and Beinfest, today I'll be, uh, let's see, how about Jennings? Just for one post. The bitching about Loria on this thread has been nothing short of ridiculous. Nobody here has ANY idea if Loria had anything to say about the #2 pick or any other pick. Rodon was rumored to be his preference. Nobody here knows if that was true or, if true, if it mattered. For all we know, upon the Beinfest firing, the new, incoming, reconfigured FO demanded and got total autonomy on drafting and probably many other things. Rodon was supposed to cost 8 mill, but the slot money for Kolek is 6.8 mill and that's supposed to make the difference? Please. People constantly seem to forget that any and every MLB operation costs 300+ mill/year to run. A mill here or there is certainly not peanuts, but in the context of 300+ mill is rarely determinative of much at all. I like Kolek. A lot. I think that Nolan Ryan is probably right -- he'll get here faster than the conventional wisdom would predict. Hopefully, he turns into a monster like Jose.

I know a select few of us had issues with the rodon non-pick, but for the most part from what I'm seeing, the main issue has been the second pick, not the first, for non-financial reasons.
June 6, 201412 yr I mean, think about it. A couple-three years from now, a 1/2/3 of Fernandez, Kolek and Eovaldi -- all of whom can throw 100? With a 4/5 of Alvarez (who hits 96)/Heaney (mid-90s)? Holy crap, that's pretty good. They should change their name to the Miami Fire-ballers. Stanton-Yelich-Ozuna-Marisnik? Between them, that's an amazing OF. All they need is a long-term infield and catcher and they're gonna be dangerous for years.

I do think we are going to have a special rotation, but I don't see much help coming for the infield in the foreseeable future without moving some of those players.

June 6, 201412 yr That would only be a fall back not really a projection. I'm sure they will give him every opportunity to stick at SS. Not a solid defender...His game is speed, speed, speed.. Justin Twine of Falls City High School (Tx.) looks like a running back, it is because he is one. Twine, who pitches and plays short, is an explosive athlete who is loaded with tools. He is a burner on the basepads and has a lightning quick bat should enable him to hit for power. In the field Twine has great range, especially up the middle, and while he lacks polish, he has the athleticism to stay at short. Twine is hitting over .500 this year, and has been hitting balls to all parts of the field http://prospectinsider.com/tag/justin-twine Justin Twine is a 2014 SS/RHP with a 5-10 195 lb. frame from Hemphill, TX who attends Hemphill HS. Medium athletic build, broad shoulders and very good present strength, physically mature. 6.52 runner, quick twitch athletic actions, shows range at shortstop especially up the middle, makes athletic plays on the run, good balance, quick hands on the exchange, good arm strength, can improve routes to balls but has all the tools to be a standout middle infield defender with more repetitions. Right handed hitter, late hand hitch/load, creates barrel length in back, simple lower half shift, very good bat speed with strength at contact, ball comes off the barrel hard, line drive contact with gap power, load and timing can be improved to better handle off speed pitches. Physical tools stand out. Good student, verbal commitment to TCU. http://www.perfectgame.org/players/playerprofile.aspx?ID=275302 interesting video http://m.mlb.com/atl/video/v33270187/draft-report-justin-twine-hs-shortstop I think he was drafted a little too high considering what other players were on the board but who the hell knows, he might just become the next Barry Larkin
June 6, 201412 yr The kid is absolutely a special, special prospect and I'm reading from several people that he could be ready by the time Jose returns from TJ. . You're hearing that he could be in the MLB rotation by at 19 years old?
June 6, 201412 yr I'm OK with Kolek, but your point on Loria seems an odd one after what just happened over the last week. Yeah, maybe odd, except for the fact that exactly nobody here knows that Loria had anything to do with the #39 draft-pick trade/Gregg signing. I think at this point you have to believe either that Loria controls every decision or none of them. Either the FO of Jennings/Hill has the authorization to make decisions or they don't. To me, it appears that Loria has set down player-payroll/drafting spending numbers and, as long as they stay within them, the FO can do whatever they think is best. Even if some of their machinations may appear to be at the behest of Loria. The Loria spending parameters aren't Dodgers or Yankee-type spending parameters. If they need more money, they'll have to ask for it if they can't find a work-around. So, they find them. My opinion, which has the same total lack of basis in fact that every other opinion here has is that responsibility for decisions this year falls on Jennings/Hill, not Loria.

Holy crap, that's pretty good. They should change their name to the Miami Fire-ballers. Reminds me of when we had Beckett, Burnett, Penny, Pavano, and Willis. The "young guns" as they were dubbed on a giveaway poster. That was one of my favorite giveaways.
June 6, 201412 yr Rodon was supposed to cost 8 mill, but the slot money for Kolek is 6.8 mill and that's supposed to make the difference? Considering Loria made them trade a draft pick worth $1.4 million of the draft pool on an awful reliever before he would allow them to sign another awful reliever, Kevin Gregg, for the exact same pro rated amount as what the draft pick's value was, then yes, it is not out of the realm of possibility that to an owner like Jeffrey Loria, $1.2 million makes a hell of alot of difference. Or did you forget about that happening already?
June 6, 201412 yr With the 76th pick (Round 3) the Marlins select 2B Brian Anderson from Arkansas (6'3" 185 lbs) Scouting report from mlb.com - Anderson has played a variety of positions since he set foot on the Arkansas campus, but it's his bat that will get him drafted in the first five or six rounds. Anderson has played the outfield, third base and second base during his time with the Razorbacks. His ability to hit from the right side of the plate will truly dictate when he gets drafted. He shows signs of being able to hit for both average and power, with the ability to add strength a plus for future development at the plate. Anderson could be an intriguing offensive-minded second baseman, but if the bat comes along as some hope, he might profile better back at the hot corner or in an outfield corner. He has the hands and arm for third base, and he possesses enough athleticism to handle left field if needed. The team that thinks Anderson can develop into an everyday bat is the one that will take him, perhaps worrying about his ultimate defensive home later on.
June 6, 201412 yr Kolek has the highest mph fastball recorded by a high school player. "102". How does any team pass on that? Just look at his game tape, looks like Kerry wood or Nolan Ryan. It's an easy 97 out of his hand. His stuff is top 10 in baseball right now. Can't pass that up.
June 6, 201412 yr I think it's a stretch to say "top ten in baseball" considering his non-fastball offerings seem to be underdeveloped window dressing.

I'm dissapointed with how they handled the next three picks, including the throwaway to Pittsburgh.
June 6, 201412 yr Fish take LHP Michael Mader (6'2" 195 lbs) from Chipola College in Florida Scouting report from mlb.com: Mader was named the 2013 Panhandle Conference Pitcher of the Year as a freshman after going 8-3 with a 3.19 ERA. Though he wasn't honored for a second year in a row, scouts say his stuff has improved this spring. Mader has added some velocity to his fastball, which tops out at 95 mph. More typically it sits in the low 90s with tailing action. His breaking ball has the most potential of his secondary offerings. At its best, it looks like a biting curveball, but it can get slurvy. There is some effort in his delivery, and he struggled with his control at times. Mader was expected to be drafted last year, but he told teams he preferred to return for another season at Chipola and ultimately wasn't selected. Should he decide to return to school again, he is committed to Florida State.

June 6, 201412 yr With pick No. 137 (5th Round) The Marlins select CF Casey Soltis (6'1" 185 lbs) from Granada HS in California MLB.com scouting report: Northern California has some intriguing high school talent this year, starting with Jacob Gatewood and including Derek Hill. Soltis might not quite be at that level, but his tools shouldn't be ignored. An athletic right fielder who is committed to the University of Oregon, Soltis uses a quick, short swing to make consistent contact to all fields. He has some raw power to tap into in the future, which should help his offensive profile in the corner outfield spot. He runs well and has the kind of strong arm you like to see in right. Soltis played on a NoCal summer team with potential first-rounders Hill and right-hander Luis Ortiz. He may not have to wait too long after them to hear his name called.
