2014 MLB Draft Thread

Our draft board must look really different than most team. All I can say is, we'll see.

so yeah, I guess they avoided Gatewood cause of $

Or anyone in the top 100 in general. ..aside from Kolek

Guess they were right about a team in the top 5 switching gears...Didn't figure they were referring to the whole draft and not just those top 5 picks

Blake Anderson is a very surprising pick since I have not seen him listed the top 200 at all. I have to admit I have looked a lot into the catchers of this draft and his name may appear only on milk cartons There is a lot of talent at catcher in the S fl area that will knock your socks off but this kid from Mississippi is pretty much a total mystery to me

So you're basically saying cause they have to sign kolek they're going cheap the rest of the draft? Lol

Well Kolek was probably the cheapest of the top 3 as well

The Twine kid looks like a kid who was just so much more athletic than his HS peers. Def needs some refining. Swing looked horribly long. But that's all just based on some 60 sec video of him.

The more I research the pick, the more I think it was more of a baseball decision than a financial one. Nolan Ryan sure seems high on him. He was gushing when talking about him and Tyler was the only player Houston scouted in person. It sounds to me like he got over-ruled by baseball people on Aiken. Also, it's pretty clear that he was the #1 overall player on our board, as we scouted him in person and it came straight from Hill's mouth. The kid is absolutely a special, special prospect and I'm reading from several people that he could be ready by the time Jose returns from TJ. Also, he was #1 on the board of the MLB Network guys and they raved about the pick after it happened. I'll allow you guys to keep hand wringing, but here are a few links I enjoyed reading.

Another thing to consider is that our baseball guys LOVE velocity as shown by the drafting of Jose (Stan Meek specifically mentioned that he had the best prep fastball he had ever seen until they saw Kolek this year) as well as the move to acquire Eovaldi (best fastball in the Majors). It makes sense from that perspective that Kolek would be the pick and my gut was that he or Rodon would be the pick. I still don't understand the hand-wringing.

I was reading a sun sentinel writeup on kolek and was blown away when i saw this:

"In his senior season, Kolek struck out 126 in 60 1/3 innings with only eight walks while compiling a 5-2 record with a 0.35 ERA."

I think people are over the Kolek thing, and it was more about him being probably the least "ready" of anyone.

The other picks are jokes. It's basically the football equivalent of using your second round pick on a guy that was projected to go in the 7th, or undrafted.

Dylan Bundy allowed 20 hits, 158 Ks and 4 walks in 71 innings WITH A 0.30 ERA his senior year in HS.

In fairness, this is going to be remembered as the "Tyler Kolek draft" for the remainder of history. The rest of the draft is a crapshoot anyway. If Kolek pans out they way the team thinks he will, I doubt many will be disappointed.

With as many picks as the marlins have in the early part of the draft, you would hope that more than the #2 pick pans out.

Maybe better than Rodon, but that's 5 years from now.

I kinda wanted a year or two wait and Rodon has the experience and stuff to give that.

Hopefully Kolek flies up the ladder because of his stuff , much like Fernandez.

I like Aiken but I like Kolek better, Aiken will be a solid starter in the majors, Kolek will be throwing no-hitters and having 300 Ks seasons

BTW Twine projects to become a Cf

That would only be a fall back not really a projection. I'm sure they will give him every opportunity to stick at SS.

BTW Twine projects to become a Cf

Marlins have stated they feel he can be a Middle infielder, 2B or SS.

CF would probably be more natural though since apparently his speed is mostly long-speed

I like our first pick, and I like our third pick. Dunno about that second pick, seemed like a waste of such an early pick. I like Kolek, believe the fastball is the best pitch to have, all other things generally fall in like if you have a good hard fastball that you can control (see: Eovaldi). I like third pick because, to me, this is the Stanton-like pick. A very high upside athlete with lots of speed and power, has played well in multiple sports, and has all the tools you need. Don't be surprised to see this guy move up the ladder (No, not saying he'll be the second coming of Stanton, but seems, at this point in time, a very similar pick). Much shorter player though, so extremely unlikely to develop in the same manner, but I still like this pick.
