The best thing about the draft is the analysis from fans on players they've never seen.

Well to be fair I've seen Rodon pitch in person at the ACC Tournament in Greensboro. Now it looks like it won't be long before I see Kolek pitching in Greensboro as well :D

That's ridiculous. We're going off what experts who have seen them are saying. Excuse me for not deferring my judgments to those of this organization's talent evaluators.

That's shocking coming from a stats guy like you. You know the "eye test" being inaccurate and all. LOL Not that I disagree with your point.

Kolek is a beast but what ive read is he's at least 4-5 years away.

He will need time to mature but he really isn't that far development-wise. If he improves on the changeup he actually may find himself flying through the minors, he has a plus slider and plus curve

You've already called it a "ridiculous move." That's a ridiculous overreaction. Nobody really knows what these players will become on draft day and there's probably not a single "expert" who thinks that the pick is "ridiculous." Relax.

I don't know. It's not like Kolek was a huge reach, most mock drafts had him going 3rd or 4th. And It's not as if Rondon was without his question marks. If anything, most people seemed to think Rondon was Loria's pick...so this is probably good news that he's continued to stay out of the way of the baseball people.

I actually believe Kolek will be better than Aiken 5 years from now

If another franchise had taken Kolek over Rodon I would have been like, Okay Sure, maybe they know something. When the marlins do it, it semlls of Loria shenanigans to me. But hey, maybe he turns out Jose 2.0.

Maybe better than Rodon, but that's 5 years from now.

I kinda wanted a year or two wait and Rodon has the experience and stuff to give that.

Hopefully Kolek flies up the ladder because of his stuff , much like Fernandez.

It's a ridiculous move because it's more likely than not financially-driven. Without looking at finances, the move is still bad. The experts seem to widely agree that Kolek was not the second-best talent on the board. What he'll become is irrelevant. Drafting Mike Trout first overall when he was drafted would have been a ridiculous move, because the information we had at that moment didn't merit him being picked first overall. The information we have on Kolek doesn't merit a second overall pick.

He's a high school pitcher who threw 100 a few times. His command is lacking, and what's projected to be his second-best pitch is currently average.

It's so blatantly obvious on this one. I know the Rodon injury issues and the overwork shenaigans, but you have a super polished Cuban American from Miami. The dude is going to be good. You absolutely take him with the 2nd pick no matter what. f*** you Loria.

I think some might be stating the Cuban connection for Rodon.

Why do you hate Cubans? LOL

Here is what I would do with Kolek. Monitor his mechanics closely. Put him on a strict diet and conditioning regime. Make him stop throwing his curveball and slider, completely eliminate them from his repertoire, as those pitches combined with his high velocity can be a mixture for disaster. Introduce him to the cutter, splitter, and circle change. Start him out in the pen, working on his mechanics and keeping a tight grip of his pitch count before slowly upping his work load and transitioning him to the rotation as the season progress.

Very surprised Gatewood is still available for the taking. He's got his flaws but the power is legit and a huge tool to have if he can stay at SS.

Didn't realize Gatewood's stock has dropped so much. We should definitely grab him if the Rockies don't.

Gatewood? Didn't think he'd drop all the way to us but it's looking possible

I think there are some questions about his hitting. From what I have read he has plenty of power but making contact is an issue. He also might not stick a SS. The upside might be worth a shot though.

There's a lot of room to grow for Gatewood. Taking a flyer on him with the 36th pick should without a doubt happen if he's still there. We don't have many SS prospect in our system, and we're lacking true power hitters as well. Gatewood is exactly the kind of risk the Marlins should be taking. I doubt he would cost much anyway since he's a HS kid.
