June 5, 201412 yr Hey a guy can dream, right? I would be shocked if Kolek ever plays at the same time as Jose or Stanton
June 5, 201412 yr Author I would be shocked if Kolek ever plays at the same time as Jose or Stanton I don't think he's a far off as people think. Plus, you know the Fish are going to push him through as fast as possible.

June 5, 201412 yr I don't think he's a far off as people think. Plus, you know the Fish are going to push him through as fast as possible. Kolek is a pretty big project. 2017 at the earliest.
June 5, 201412 yr Author Kolek is a pretty big project. 2017 at the earliest. No way. I would be shocked if Kolek isn't on the mound at some point in 2016.
June 5, 201412 yr Jeffrey Loria never misses an opportunity to rub his cheapness in our faces. It's so blatantly obvious on this one. I know the Rodon injury issues and the overwork shenaigans, but you have a super polished Cuban American from Miami. The dude is going to be good. You absolutely take him with the 2nd pick no matter what. Fuck you Loria.
June 5, 201412 yr Kolek is a beast but what ive read is he's at least 4-5 years away. I'm cool with that. Over the past few weeks, before the past few days, I assumed we would take one of the prep arms simply because we have SOOOO MANY arms at the top of the system that will be ML ready any minute. There's no space for all those arms at the top. Kolek will be up in time for him to replace Jose when he gets too expensive, lol.
June 5, 201412 yr Yeah, Rodon has some drawbacks but he's clearly the more established pitcher. This is clearly a "That's so Marlins" move by going for signability. At least they aren't going full retard like Theo Epstein did. :lol
June 5, 201412 yr I hope Kolek pans out, but he's gigantic (6'5'', 250) and only in HS. If he's throwing that hard so early I wonder if that's not going to end well for him. I guess we'll see. I do think it's pretty clear that they didn't want to pay what Boras wanted for Rodon so they passed. The unfortunate thing is, Rodon would have been ready in about a year/year and a half most likely, but it will be at least 3 before we see Kolek in all probability.

Obviously Loria wasn't going to pony up what was necessary for Rodon, but Kolek is a hell of a prospect in his own right.

Also, the way the chips are falling into place, it makes more sense for the Marlins to bring in arms that will be ready sooner than later.

And It's not as if Rondon was without his question marks. If anything, most people seemed to think Rondon was Loria's pick...so this is probably good news that he's continued to stay out of the way of the baseball people.

Also, the way the chips are falling into place, it makes more sense for the Marlins to bring in arms that will be ready sooner than later. It's dumb if they think Rodon is WAY better than Kolek. If they feel the talent level is pretty equal, take the younger guy you can develop and figure out what you have in Heaney/Nicolino/DeSclafani/Flynn etc in the meantime. Remember, starting pitchers isn't the problem with us competing sooner...

June 6, 201412 yr Kolek imo could very easily come out of here as the best pitcher in this draft. He's got the stuff to be that guy. I'm a big fan of Rodon, but he's got issues that go far beyond signability. Would I have loved if they picked him? Absolutely? Is it earth shattering that we took Kolek over him? No. But it might be yet another sign that ultimately money dictates who gets picked by this team as opposed to talent. Unless we use the money saved taking Kolek over Rodon to take a 1st round talent who fell in the competitive balance picks or pay over slot for later round picks, its a sign of Loria being Loria once again.
June 6, 201412 yr Remember that we lost some of our pool money by trading that draft pick to Pittsburgh (around $1.4 mil). That will hurt if we draft some guys later on who fell because of higher money demands (like the failure to sign Matt Krook last year).

Remember, starting pitchers isn't the problem with us competing sooner... It's ridiculous to draft a younger player because the Marlins have Nicolino, Desclafani, and Flynn in their system. The Marlins already know they don't have a top of the rotation arm in any of them. The Marlins absolutely have room and a need for another dominant arm for when Fernandez comes back. And that's even assuming that Fernandez, Eovaldi, Alvarez, and Heaney all stay healthy.
June 6, 201412 yr Guess the Jays don't mind waiting on him What pitchers do they have in their system? Not many IIRC
June 6, 201412 yr Wow Hoffman went 9th overall. That's pretty damn surprising. Very surprising however it seems that the medical reports on him were extremely good, he has no bargaining power therefore will be a easy, cheap signing and the upside is huge

That will hurt if we draft some guys later on who fell because of higher money demands (like the failure to sign Matt Krook last year). We agreed to sign Krook, but later pulled the offer back because of his physical. Turned out they got that one right as he ended up having T J surgery in college. I still get your point though.
June 6, 201412 yr I still can't believe this. This was such a ridiculous move. No one predicted it, because it's fucking retarded.
