I went for Ozuna for pretty much the same reasons that Erick did.

Not the "best" surprise ... but the "biggest" surprise for me is that we could soon be "entertained" once again by Kevin Gregg in a Marlins uniform. I would not have believed this would ever happen ... although with our FO I wouldn't be surprised to wake up one morning to find they'd traded Fernandez and Stanton for Dan Uggla.

I cling to the hope that Gregg will continue to blow up in the minors and that we never again see him here, other than in someone elses uniform.

For the simple fact that he's the only one of the four who's production might be sustainable/something worth getting excited about.

 

Mcgehee has been a nice fit, but his success is proof that timing is everything in life. I don't think his average on balls in play is sustainable so the .RISP #'s will cool down, although I expect him to hit for some more power. All in all, he's just the okay stopgap that I thought he'd be.

 

Koehler isn't very good.

 

Alvarez isn't 2.62 ERA good. He's actually been rather inconsistent imo even though the ERA doesn't show it. + Alvarez doesn't really surprise me because I've always thought that he and Eovaldi were good pitchers with upside despite the fact that a good portion of the fan base wants them in the bullpen for whatever reason.

 

So yeah, Ozuna.

Then again, maybe it's a hopeful sign. That is, the FO realizes that the rest of the junk in the BP is so bad that Gregg would represent some sort of minimal improvement. We all know McGehee's OPS. We also know he's been sucking bad when no one's on base. Okay, so be it. Let me also factor in all the outfield walls he's hit on the fly just missing seeing it go out.

The guy has been pure gold when its counted the most. No cause for disappointment from this observer. I also think its only a matter of time before the HR's start coming.

Yea I'd take it in a heartbeat. Marcell isn't as fast and probably won't walk as much as Cameron. But if he defends and keeps the OPS around .800, that's good enough for my CFer.

Cameron's career OBP was .338, which is higher than what Marcell is doing now but certainly achievable long-term. But as you mentioned, he'll never be a 20/30 guy like Cameron was. Certainly someone to be excited about.

Is it really that surprising?

Sure. I'm more surprised to see Eovaldi hitting these kinds of numbers than I am to see Ozuna hit 11 homers. I'm thrilled his power has shown up, don't get me wrong, but Ozuna had done it in the minors so I thought it was a good bet at least that aspect of his game would show up soon, there should at least be some carryover there. And it was already evident that Zuna was a plus defender. I don't know where his average will wind up at the end of the season and he certainly has patience issues at the plate, but hey so far so good.

 

Some people still had Eovaldi pegged for relief. He's getting deeper into games and his peripherals are really good.

Third base was supposed to be a black hole this season just like it was last season. Hell we swung and missed on a couple third basemen before we settled on McGehee. For him to be doing as well as he has when he was something like the team's third or fourth option going into the season remarkable, especially since he didn't even play in America last year.

 

Koehler would've won this vote if his regression didn't already start to show, and if the question was most impressive player Alvarez would win. But most surprising is Hendo.

Well the question also wasn't "who is surprising you based upon their statistics to this point in the season?" Kinda allows you to answer it however you want.

 

I don't think Ozuna is surprising me at all. I don't think Koehler is really surprising me either. We all know McGehee has done this before. I don't think that's a surprise. It's pleasant, but it's not a surprise. Alvarez is lights out right now. His SO/W is way up. He's systematically removed our team's biggest weakness in a good amount of his starts...

I used to think I was Mr Negative. I am really pleased so far and see potential for a good resy of the season. There is the bugaboo of Stanton's leaving which will come too soon but as long as we do have him why be negatigve.....c'mon Penguino smile for a change.

I tend to think that everything they do is within budget constraints as Loria tries to figure out how to sign Stanton long-term while keeping him happy short-term. The main money to do so is the national TV (24-25 mill/yr) money, but every mill counts.

 

So far, they've done well with their minor FA signings, McGehee, etc. and not too bad with Salty. Gregg, well, we'll see. He'll just be a minor mistake like Marmol if he doesn't work out.

 

Bring up Heaney for a real surprise.

 

Next year? Fernandez, Eovaldi, Alvarez, Heaney, whoever (and whoever will be pretty good)? With Stanton, Yelich, Ozuna? Maybe resign McGehee while waiting for Moran, Dietrich will be back up, Jones at 1B, maybe Hech improves a little? That's a pretty good team.

 

Realmuto may turn out to be a very pleasant surprise -- I'd love to see him turn Salty into the back-up. Good-bye Mathis.

 

The biggest non-surprise? Furcal. Notice how nobody even mentions him? He wins the non-surprise prize. 3.5 mill wasted, or at least 1.75 at this point.
