who needs a #2 starter when you got 5 #3s according to samson

We don't have any starters. Why the hell would we create less starters?

I'd do it (bullpen that is, not closer), assuming money wasn't an issue. Koehler and Phelps rounding out the right handers is an insane bullpen (with Dunn and Conley as the LHP, Ramos, Capps, Morris as the right handers).

Sign two SP (Kennedy, Kazmir), Cosart as the 4, Nicolino/Urena/vagabond 5th, and you're looking pretty good with the pitching staff. If desperate times happen, stretch out Koehler or Phelps.

I expect this not to happen.

Because Koehler is going to get bombed next year as a SP, then turn into Andrew Miller or Wade Davis for someone else. (He won't be as good as those two, but you get it. I think he'd be a pretty good reliever).

"Due to their lack of quality starting pitching, the Miami Marlins have decided to convert their entire starting rotation into relievers. They will not have any starting pitchers but will instead have a 13-man bullpen that will start and end every game."

Again, if we had decent starting pitcher options to replace him then fine. But we're working with Cosart, Urena, Nicolino, Conley, etc...who are all decidedly less reliable than Koehler has been for us. Even if there's an incredibly high likelihood of Koehler being rocked (and we've been waiting for two years), we aren't in a position to move him to the bullpen now. That's just dumb. If we improve the rotation through signings and have a full rotation without him, then fine do it. But we don't have that luxury. He has to be in the rotation because the alternative is making Koehler a bullpen guy and giving Pineyro a starting rotation spot out of Spring Training.

At the moment, our rotation stands next season as...

Fernandez/Koehler/Cosart/Nicolino/Phelps with Urena/Flores/Hand on standby. That is awful. Take out Koehler and we have a Urena/Flores/Hand in the starting rotation. Sure it's likely we sign somebody (at this point we'll get the 1 year contract scraps), but the truth is without MAJOR breakthrough seasons by Cosart and Nicolino (because we know what we have in Phelps/Koehler), this team is absolutely F'ed in the A next season.

They need to sign two real SP. It's just that easy. Solves all the issues.

Also, I think you need to do whats best for the player to maximize their value. Maybe the rotation sucks, but if Koehler can be a super above average reliever, maximize his value rather than having a whatever 5th SP.

What's so frustrating is that they either made no effort to land/ got outbid for a lot of SP talent already.

Once again, many of you were hoodwinked into believing that the Marlins would invest the money they saved in the deadline deals and draft last summer.

I don't know why many of yours seems purposely to ignored Conley as a SP candidate even after the great performance at last september.

I'm all for giving him a shot, I like Conley more than any other of the new crop.  The org probably wants Nicolino to win the job though.

And lets not jump too fast on him, it was only a month or so.   But agree with you.

Agreed. Conley is the only one of our cadre of "number 3 SPs" that could actually be a #3 SP. Rest are garbage to garbage+.

some of them are young enough to figure something else out. Conley had his secondary stuff working at the end of the year. If he can keep that velocity on the secondary stuff he will continue to be successful.
