FA SP update

Featured Replies

If I'm the Marlins i go hard after Wei Yin Chen and try to get Kyle Lohse on a small deal.  He had a down year last year but his previous 4 years were very good and if we could get him cheap i could see him having a nice bounce back year.

I think Chen would be a great stable addition this rotation could really use either way.

There's wiggle room on that

regardless they clearly arent "reinvesting" any of the $ they saved from those trades. And it's clear they dont actually give a shit about attaining an actual SP that will help the team

I doubt Kennedy gets more than 11. If he does, it won't be much more.

I liked what I saw from Conley when he finally stopped trying to guide his fastball at 89 and started throwing free at 92-94.

Kyle Lohse would be an interesting addition and I suspect the $11 million could go up to $13-14 million if needed. I would like Kennedy or Chen and I think both would be solid additions.

Chen would be at 15~20M.

This franchise is rotten and I don't see how it gets fixed.  While they have some nice pieces (Jose, Stanton, Dee, Yelich), they don't have nearly enough talent to content for a title. They don't have the FA $$$ to sign enough veterans to fill the gaps, they don't have the minor league talent to either promote from within or to trade for the players who could fill the gaps.  Loria is apparently content to spend the bare minimum to ride out the string for a huge payday if (when?) he sells.

I'm pissed as hell that this team gets lumped with the Cincinnatis, the Milwaukees, the San Diegos and the Kansas Citys as "small market teams."  A few facts are in order:

According to the most recent Nielsen Designated Market Area data, Miami/Ft Lauderdale ranks as the 16th largest media market in the US.  Behind Miami in the rankings are the cities hosting the Rockies, Indians, Cardinals, Pirates, Orioles, Padres, Royals, Brewers, Reds.  So the Marlins rank #21 in potential viewership.

If you look at population figures, the Miami/Ft Lauderdale MSA ranks 9th among MLB cities.  There are, by last count, 5.6 M people in the MSA.  Only the Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Angels, Cubs, White Sox, Rangers, Phillies, Astros, Blue Jays, and Nats can claim a larger potential attendance pool.  To be fair, the Miami/Ft Lauderdale MSA is one of the lowest income area among all MLB cities (only Pittsburghers and Tampa Bay residents make less money on average), although this stat measures REPORTED income.  Given all the Lambos, Rolls and Ferraris on the roads down here, I have to imagine that if you factored in illegal or unreported income, Miami/ Ft Lauderdale would be at least league-average.

Point is:  we have plenty of available revenue streams and there is no way that Loria can justify the lowest payroll in baseball nearly every year.  He has to either spend money on this team or sell to someone who will.

Not worth that much even if he gets it

Nobody is worth what they are signing for, which is why sources believe the Marlins will get the Harang deal done. The two camps are reported to be separated by less than 100K and Harang will be getting his requested multiyear deal. Or he may very well just retire, in which case Loria will pocket the 800K or so saved..

Where'd you see the Harang story?

why?

lohse is by and large done.  reclamation project as a #5, maybe.

counting on him to give you good innings...that would be kinda stupid.

(crap, here comes a kyle lohse signing by the marlins)

I don't want Chen considering his asking price. It's absurd.

pitching is expensive.

it is what it is, and the marlins being abject failures at acquiring good cost controlled pitching is going to bite them in the ass.

their options for contending next year:

1) spend real money on pitching

2) pray that the pitching you have magically takes the needed 2-3 steps forward all together in 2016

3) put on the facade that you are trying, but in reality have zero intention of competing

My money is on #3, though I'm sure #2 is the plan in some weird way for this organization.

Legit question for Admin or someone who will give me a real answer and not just a Loria hating answer... Where is that money saved last summer? Like can that actually just be pocketed by Loria? I wanna say no because if a business saves money and doesn't reinvest it the owner can't just take the money and put it in his own personal bank account can he? I feel like that money, when it's not being spent would still be considered company money. So I'm more confused as to why that money isn't being put into payroll because I don't actually think Loria can just say "Hey we saved $3 million on so and so, now I'm gonna buy a $3 million painting for my house." The money has to go somewhere in the business side of things.

From a business accounting standpoint, its beyond easy for the owners of a company to realize profits.
