January 12, 201610 yr After signing a solid pitcher like Chen and adding Johnson to platoon with Bour, can the team be competitive next year? The Phillies/Braves are terrible. The Mets pitching is obviously top notch, but their offense seems questionable, as well as their middle relief. The Nats look like the best overall team to me on paper, but they underachieved last year. Can the team compete for a playoff spot if healthy? On the field, they seem to be at least above average at every position.
January 12, 201610 yr A lot would have to go right, but it's possible with Chen being a huge upgrade over for our SP situation. They still need Kennedy. I agree with you on CJ but still hate the guy
January 12, 201610 yr At least another 2/3 arm and a solid power bat. This team was in bad shape to compete up until today. Adding Chen and Johnson doesn't elevate them to competitors. Neither of the WC slots will come from the NL East, either.
January 12, 201610 yr I know he has his shortcomings, but maybe Ian Desmond could be had on a 1 or 2 year deal.

Neither of the WC slots will come from the NL East, either. Is there anyone available that you'd add? Power bat like Cespedes/Upton (which would mean trade Ozuna)? I mention the Phillies/Braves because I'd like to think that playing them 19x is going to be somewhat of an advantage. I don't think we're a playoff team right now either, but just wondering what other fans think in terms of how close the team is. With two wildcards, I'd like to think it could be a competitive year barring another disastrous year of injuries (like Stanton/Jose missing a bunch of games again).
January 12, 201610 yr Not sure where he would fit, but could probably play 3-4 positions. But honestly now that I think about it...is Desmond that much of an improvement on Dietrich?

I don't think that there is anyone who they could realistically add anymore this offseason. Most FA are already signed, the impact ones still available are out of their price range, and the Marlins have zero minor league depth that could be used to acquire someone via trade.
January 12, 201610 yr Author Desmond doesn't seem like a fit here unless if they trade Hech for a starter which I wouldn't be opposed to doing. They're not going to do that though.
January 12, 201610 yr Not even close. Remember culture of losing??? Hand, Dunn, Ramos, Mathis. Cosart. Need I say more?
January 12, 201610 yr With full health and one more starting pitcher, they "can" compete. Will it actually happen? A lot has to go right for us and a lot has to go wrong for the rest of the division.

January 12, 201610 yr So we're never going to win again? If we get rid of these guys then possibly. Oh yes how can I forget ? We have Edwin freaking Jackson. Fuck this team sometimes . NO we are not ready to contend unless we get damn lucky
January 12, 201610 yr Author If we get rid of these guys then possibly. Oh yes how can I forget ? We have Edwin freaking Jackson. Fuck this team sometimes . NO we are not ready to contend unless we get damn lucky Every team has below average players. Not to mention that some of the guys you mentioned are not even bad. AJ Ramos, really? Every team in the big leagues would want him in their bullpen.
January 12, 201610 yr They need another #3 SP, to stay healthy and get the 2014 outfield with the 2015 infield production. They should really ask Benedict who his favorite SP is left on the market, and sign that guy.
January 12, 201610 yr They have to have nearly 100% perfect health the entire year to contend and we all know that just doesn't happen. They still desperately need pitching. Hopefully catch lightning in a bottle and sign someone who has a bounce back year.. Fister, Lincecum, etc..

January 12, 201610 yr Author Benedict is one of the stronger supporters for Fister I'm guessing Benedict had significant input in signing Chen?
January 12, 201610 yr I'm guessing Benedict had significant input in signing Chen? Benedict and Chen seems like a match in heaven. I don't see how there can be anything done for Fister
January 12, 201610 yr Only way to me that this team becomes a contender is if we sign Cespedes and then trade Ozuna for a top 3 SP. Salazar/Carrasco for Ozuna and we have the following team Gordon, Yelich, Stanton, Cespedes, Bour, Prado, Realmuto, Hech Jose, Chen, Salazar/Carrasco, Conley, Nicolino. Depending on the back end of the rotation that can be a great team.
