SilverBullet
This is gonna be hot. Edit: Just read the article, apparently it's about a new position on the field, first base. Super disappointed.
Das Texan
This is such a Marlins thing to do. It's dumb for so many numerous reasons.
poptart
another idea to keep his bat in the lineup: start the starting catcher at catcher is it 2018 yet?

hovertical
if he was terrible at catcher then sure, but uhhh.....no?
Iowa
I guess I'm confused why him learning a second position is a bad thing?
Das Texan
I guess I'm confused why him learning a second position is a bad thing? Learning a second position is fine. Him spending significant time there instead of behind the plate is stupid.
taiwanmarlin
Giancarlo skips Classic to learn new position as a catcher.
marlinsmaniac
I see no harm in giving him a rest behind the plate, those guys take a serious beating back there. This is a very common practice these days. It has nothing to do with whether or not he's a good catcher. For god's sake, he's not even the shoelaces of Posey or Mauer and those guys have been playing a lot of first base for years. Obviously those two are post-injury cases, but still. Das Texan
Buster started 11 games at 1b last year. If realmuto starts more than 15 games there this is stupid.
p
Realmuto hit great last season. That doesn't make him a proven hitter. Would definitely have preferred if they just let keep working solely on being a good catcher. If he needs rest then rest him and play Ellis. This is just a terrible cheap Marlins move to avoid spending a fuckin dime more to find a platoon at first. And has there really ever been this many cheap options ? Could easily found someone on a minor League contract that could still be "kind of useful".

One perfect excuse from Hill would be "we have no more roster spot for a fifth bench player, because we need to do anything to keep the Cy Young award caliber pitcher "Urena"". SilverBullet
Along with Realmuto, non roster invite outfielder Brandon Barnes is also learning first base this spring. If there's any non roster guy with a fair chance of making this team it's gotta be Barnes. If he picks up the new position and has a good spring at the plate he could change the 4 man bench idea and become the right handed bench bat this team needs to back up Bour and fill out the bench. I don't think we would give up Jose "Cy Young" Urena.
Admin
Learning a second position is fine. Him spending significant time there instead of behind the plate is stupid. Still better than wasting his time in a tournament that doesn't matter and nobody watches.
AeroFishOne
Never bad idea to have a backup plan just as long as it doesn't screw with the main position. Just realized I lost almost 100 post. I'm never going to stay above 5,000. Sad

SilverBullet
Billy Butler. I'd feel more comfortable having Urena bat. Billy Butler sucks. How many teams are lining up to sign him?

Hammerhead
How hard is 1B to learn? Seriously. He needed to skip the Classic for it? Could've probably learned during ST.
Hammerhead
No chance barring injury Yeah he has no chance. They're gonna start their .229 career MLB hitter vs LHP in most games at 1B
