August 9, 20178 yr Please delete this thread, it opens up old wounds. Idc how bad he may pitch, it still hurts -_-
August 9, 20178 yr Author Because it's entirely possible the FO felt strongly that Capps would be ineffective no longer having the edge of jumping five feet closer to the plate before releasing the baseball. Will have to wait and see see because so far it's a very small sample size.
August 9, 20178 yr Too early to tell but Mike Hill may have gotten lucky with this one. Still was an extremely stupid move to include Capps in that SD trade regardless of what happens with Capps.
August 11, 20178 yr Regardless of how it turns out, it was still dumb and the fact that they initially included Luis Castillo in that deal to get Colin Rea makes it look worse now. Fortunately, they were able to get Castillo back and traded him for Straily, which, frankly, is another trade I don't think they should've made. I wonder why they were so eager to deal Castillo?

I've always read it as they knew Castillo was their best trade chip so they kept trying to use him to get better returns back. It's like going to the store with a hundred bucks and insisting on spending the hundred bucks even though you can buy things that are cheaper.

August 14, 20178 yr No. see page 1 of this thread Yes. You can make the wrong decision and have the right outcome.
August 15, 20178 yr Author If the Marlins felt very strongly that him not being allowed to hop 4 feet closer to home plate would make him not as good (and he ends up not being as good over a large sample size) they made the correct move.
August 16, 20178 yr If the Marlins felt very strongly that him not being allowed to hop 4 feet closer to home plate would make him not as good (and he ends up not being as good over a large sample size) they made the correct move. I think that's the issue here, they were concerned his delivery would be deemed illegal any day now and cut their losses. To take that out of his delivery will be a massive undertaking soon enough.
August 19, 20178 yr If the Marlins felt very strongly that him not being allowed to hop 4 feet closer to home plate would make him not as good (and he ends up not being as good over a large sample size) they made the correct move. Best case scenario, it was an irrelevant trade. If you're basing it on the outcome, it's hard to say they made the "correct move" when they got nothing in return.

March 27, 20188 yr Carter Capps was DFA’d today by the Padres and went unclaimed. the problem was not the move when we traded him, although that trade was obviously absolutely stupid when it happened given that it was obvious that Cashner was awful, the problem was that we had the opportunity to sell high the year before (reports are that we were trying to get Judge or Greg Bird from the yankees) and we didnt depite the fact that he was a reliever on a terrible team and then decided to just throw him in to a trade less than a year later when his vaue was at his lowest. It was a consistent problem over the last 5 years or so where we consistently sold low on guys and bought high on others despite obvious regression that was inevitable.
