There is also Miami...yes Miami is one of the poorest areas in the country. Don't let the glitz & glamour fool you. Most of Miami works paycheck to paycheck with shitty paying jobs (unionization is pactically nil), due to "right to work laws" which suppresses wages & creates a huge gap between rich & poor. Working people in Miami have less disposable income than nearly every other major American city. Couple that with the Marlins high ticket prices, the team hardly ever wins, firesales, Loria's local media blackout, etc....well you get small crowds. Same with the Heat, and other local teams...ticket prices are way out of touch with the local economy....

Fair enough, but then if they do not provide entertainment, will they complain that fans do not support the bad show.  A $55 million dollar team is not going to be entertaining.  Support for the home team requires more than entertainment value, it is an emotional bond that is built.  These guys know that down here, and after multiple fire sales and total distrust in management, if they chop it to shreds again, it is just another knife in the back.  The response from the fan base will be natural and fully justified.  So, in that case, given a clear cut outcome, why the F did they want to buy the team knowing it will fail and there will be losses.  I can tell you why-just like Loria took losses, it was a long term investment with a big time upside and probably a big ego thing.  Thus, most of us are not ready to pat them on the back and say "we understand why you are doing this again".  Also, tougher to take when we believe that another buyer was ready to come in and change the model.  

 

 

Looking at all the backloaded deals it is evident Loria was planning to sell after this year all along.  The new group coming out and stating they're going to seriously slash payroll before the team is even officially theirs is ominous to say the least.  What little casual fanbase is left will completely leave with a new group coming in and just gutting the team and ridding them of their brightest star and gate draw (Stanton).  Don't care how good Yelich can be - he hasn't made it to stardom yet and there's a chance what we're seeing this season is what he does going forward and sorry, but a 280-290ish hitter who hits 15-20 hr a year isn't a centerpiece to an entire offense. 

 

Dumping Stanton, a year after losing Jose and leaving the team bereft of any players a casual fan would want to come and see is a recipe for utter disaster.  The new owners had a chance to invest up front and completely rebrand the franchise (for the better - instead of just dumping everyone for shit deals to cut salary and stock the minors with garbage) but they appear to just want to bank on glory boy Jeter being the panacea that will make everyone forget the on-field product will be utter shit if they move forward with their payroll slashing firesale plans. 

 

I don't honestly know if I'll continue following the team as much as I have my entire life.  I won't become a fan of another team, I'll never be able to do that.  I just can't rewire my heart like that.  Some people can.  I can't.  But like others have said I will probably stop paying for the MLB Extra Innings package and save myself a couple hundred bucks and just follow them via boxscore instead of watching the bulk of the games.  I don't need to see Ichiro starting in right every day while Stanton is hitting 60 HR's in LA.  I used to religiously follow the Dolphins and NFL in general until Goodell came into the NFL and just utterly ruined it - now I watch the Superbowl and that's about it.  At least I still have the NHL to entertain me I guess.

I think you are correct, that Loria has had this planned all along. My question is *WHY* would Loria do that ? Just to fuck over the new owner ? I mean he got what he wanted and the was to become a billionaire. I agree with just about all of that, though I would disagree with one bit. That's that Mark Buehrle was absolutely worth his contract and was a total steal for a solid lefty at that price. Should've never traded him.

this much is true.  I was going to point out that there was zero wrong with Mark's contract and he pitched well during his time here and continued to do so when he left until he finally called it quits.  I WISH they had kept him around. 

 

Some of the other FA signings they made were actually pretty decent at the time too - before the player took the field.  The Salty contract was actually pretty damn good based on market value and filling a need on the team. Hell, even that asshole Keith Law agreed he was very surprised the Marlins were able to sign him compared to what other FA catchers got that same offseason.  Chen was one of the top 3 starting pitching FA's when they signed him.  It's also not like Reyes was garbage when he was here.  He pretty much WAS the Marlins in that awful 2012 season.  They have had utterly atrocious luck when they sign people and in a small market that destroys a teams ability to compete year in and year out.  Had his master plan in 2012 succeeded and the team went on to become perennial contenders and thus bringing in the fans and increasing their brand as a destination for players then I do believe he wouldn't be selling.  I think the turning point for him was the Stanton contract.  He offered that deal with a game plan in place to succeed or get the eff out when it started escalating and has thus centered all backloaded deals since then to coincide with Stanton's.  Last year's flurry of trades with the Padres pretty much emptied whatever little he had left in the tank and since he knew he wasn't going to be owning the team after 2017 he figured why not try to sign a couple relievers to utterly stupid contracts on his way out?  I'm sure both of their deals would have been massively backloaded as well - we need to be thankful he didn't just go batshit crazy and offer a truly crippling contract and sign both of them.

 

In the end, i'll always pull for the Marlins, and never another team, but if they dump half the starting offense that was so good for so much of the year and obliterate that awesome OF they have i will definitely be stepping back and not bothering to watch most of the games unless by miracle of miracles they somehow brought Tommy back.  Still can't stand Todd.  I listened to Kruk for crying out loud when they played the Phillies so as to avoid Todd.

 

 

FA normally is an awful thing for a team with no money that wants to be competitive. I still reserve the Buerhle case as an exception to the rule, because the marlins paid the price for a guy who would have cost that price at that performance regardless of whether or not he was home grown. The Buerhle move is a move that a competitive team with an ok rotation makes in order to have a solid rotation. 

 

This is in stark constrast to the Chen deal, which cost more for a hope that one good look was permanent (of course it wasn't). 

 

I suppose the only thing about the Buerhle deal was that it was not well timed. If Jose were still here and that's Buerhle type deal was made at the beginning of this season, I would support it 1000%. Because our pitching is shit. But I suppose that Buehrle deal relied on the Marlins making all the other dumb ass deals of Reyes, Bell, etc. to justify it. In which, the premise of the Buerhle deal is flawed, but the actual contract itself was solid. 

 

 

I really believe Loria has never purposely tried to screw this team over. He's always tried to do what's best for the team. The problem is he has no clue what really is best for the team.

Another epic losing spree is going on that has been the hallmark of this team for many years now.

 

I won't shed any tears if this team gets broken up.  They made a decent run, but you start to see how easily they give up after the Nationals handed them their ass.

I think they didn't give up but just not good enough to win games consistently.

 

 

I'm really ready for the next phase for this team, and not interested in this year anymore. For me, it's all how Jeter & company will build for the future.

 

I want to see a clear plan, not Loria's let's patch it for cheap plan or his Let's build with stupid money for middle road players and hope to catch lightning approaches. They are way too much of a gamble.
