I'd rather have a 28 year old Castro at 2/$22, with a team option to make it 3/$37, versus a 30 year old Gordon at a guaranteed 3/$38. Dee has obviously been the better player the last few seasons, but slap hitters worry me on long term deals. Castro can hit, even if he can stand to walk more. He's probably safer to meet/exceed his projections moving forward. Guys like Gordon fall off cliffs as they are singularly dependent on their speed. Juan Pierre had 5.5 WAR in 06-07 and then 5 WAR total 08-13. I picked those years as that is the dividing line of when Pierre turned 30. Just saying for the sake of saying. I don't fault them for trading Gordon. That shouldn't be part of the Castro analysis. But you're right that there is absolutely no reason to have Castro (or Bour, or Straily) on this team opening day. That's around $20 million in 2018 payroll they can ship out easily, get a half dozen prospects some of which will be pretty good, and use that money to sign a few 1 year reclamation projects to trade at the deadline/bank for future seasons.

He's been around long enough, he is what he is. He had the best BABIP of his career last year too, so if anything, it's as good time as ever to move him. We'll see what happens by March. I think things are stalled as teams posture for JD/Hosmer/Darvish/Arrieta/etc. Things will happen when some of the dominos go and I have a hard time seeing Castro on this team opening day. Hopefully they are smart enough to clean house of everyone else and build around Yelich and Realmuto.

At this point 5 million shouldn’t matter. If he has a first half like he did this past season and his defens nos improved your potentially looking at a very good package coming this way.

January 5, 20188 yr I think we end up trading him, but i think the slow developing offseason might make it necessary to carry him into the year and let him hopefully put up numbers and get a haul before the deadline. For whatever reason, the slow offseason development wise seems to be holding a lot back all over the league.

Expiring deal, has always contributed when healthy, and if he is done you cut ties at the end of the year. Obviously Castro has more value, but Gonzalez wouldnt have been the worst salary to take on.

I was thinking along the lines of taking some of his salary off their hands to get a better prospect return and then flipping him at the deadline to a contender to help the rebuild after playing him every day for the first half. That is obviously predicated on him actually being healthy and i have now idea how healthy he actually is. As bald eagle points out, given the lack of interest in him he could be done physically, especially as a position player. That also might be due to the fact that almost none of the top free agents have signed either, however.
January 5, 20188 yr It's kind of hard to say. So I don't know. My gut is telling me that they are "trying" but aren't trying hard enough. You aren't really hearing rumors to the effect that the Marlins are actively shopping him. Hopefully things are picking up now that the holidays are over. I wouldn't be surprised if the Marlins are set on an infield of Prado/Rojas/Castro/Bour and plan on using Dietrich as a left fielder. However, it's certainly not out of the question that Castro is moved before spring training, either. It would be Anderson at 3b playing everyday I would think, not prado. Between Dietrich, Prado, and Castro, they appear to have a logjam of mediocrity at 2b/LF. I really think a lot of it is just an overall lack of activity in free agency to this point. teams still are ikely holding out hope that they can get an upgrade at various positions via free agency and its holding up the trade talks for Castro. Or they could just be trying to move Yelich and JT first and then move on to the secondary guys like Castro, Straily, and possibly Bour.

Someone like Cooper should have more of a shit of winning that spot. Riddle and Rojas probably battle it out for the SS position in spring training. This is all barring they don't sign someone before the Spring Training starts.
