Mattingly Extended

Featured Replies

Ultimately I think this has nothing to do with Donnie's on-field work. In the last two seasons Mattingly has to have convinced Jeter and Co. that he had the right qualities that this front office wants in their team's manager and that not even an outside hire would have been a better fit. As crazy as that sounds to us it's gotta be the case. There's no way the front office discussed this and said "there are better managers available" and then kept Don who was on the way out anyways. They didn't think Girardi, Posada, Hillman, Espada, or whoever could lead this team any better than Don.

For the record, I get why we're like this, but it's funny that the Marlins change managers like they change their underwear but the one time they finally extend a respectable manager this is us...

And there'd be people saying the new manager sucks a month into his time anyway and wanting him fired. Same with all fanbases and managers.

There's this thought too... how long of a leash does Donnie have now even with the extension? Remember Redmond got an extension and was fired like two months into the next season. Are the Marlins shooting themselves in the foot and forcing themselves to stick with Mattingly even if 2020 is a disaster?

This Mattingly extension surprised me, though I understand the continuity thing, which is something we've been lacking over years.  I was totally expecting them to let him go and bring someone else in.

I'm especially surprised it's a 2 year extension with an option.  I'd have expected a one year with an option, as they could then bring in "their" guy when they expect to make the push into contention.

I am guessing Don's agent would have balked at a 1+1 offer. Don's a veteran skipper, he wouldn't want to be on a virtual year to year deal. This guarantees him 2 years of salary even if canned.

I'm seeing a lot of comments criticizing the signing due to how Mattingly is a terrible bullpen manager and that despite a good team in LA he did bad in the playoffs. I also see them saying he is a bad motivator since he could not lead the great Marlins with Stanton, Ozuna, and Yelich to the playoffs. Some people even said things like "why reward the guy, he's no Bob Melvin."

First, just about every fan complains about their manager's bullpen management. It is a common feature that we ignore the good outcomes and give managers no credit for those and give them all of the blame for the bad outcomes. As far as the playoffs thing goes I find it funny that people say he's no Bob Melvin, but what has Melvin done in the playoffs besides get booted in the first round every time? As for the offense. The group was 29th in baseball in runs scored in 2015. When he took over it moved up to 27th. Just because everyone broke out with a big year in 2017 did not mean that it was a consistently good offense. As for the pitching, you can't blame Mattingly for depleting the farm of quality pitchers and investing in guys like Latos, Cashner, and Straily. The pitching sucked because of the FO and not Mattingly.

I really hate how teams use a manager during a rebuild and then just toss them when they are ready to compete. I mean you are just treating the guy like garbage saying "deal with our crap and when we're ready to reap the rewards of your hard work we're gonna kick you to the curb."

This is the refreshing part of this. For better or worse Donnie has earned the chance to see the rebuild into it's next phase (hopefully that means into contention) so it's like a shock that this front office didn't decide to go with "their guy." They've decided to trust that the previous ownership's guy is their guy too.

Which is why I think it says that Don is their guy, or has become their guy.

NJ.com can apparently see into the future. I wonder who their world series picks were...

That article doesn't make sense.

The fact that they're keeping Don now means he isn't gonna be fired for "their guy." The time to do that was now as his initial contract expired. This pretty much says he's here to stay (not to say he won't be fired down the line but this extension means he's not seen as the transitional guy anymore).

Yeah it's just a bunch of bogus speculation that they provide no evidence for. Pretty much a hit piece to attack the Marlins for the very thing they have always attacked the Marlins for not doing.

You're right.

I'm personally on board with his bullpen management. Every fan base thinks their manager (especially this year) is terrible at bullpen management. But frankly, Donnie's decisions this year and last are all defendable in my book.

I know that's not the Cool Guy opinion to have, but frankly there were times where his only options were all bad options, and that just happens with rebuilding bullpens.

When he brings Chen in a late inning tied game or a game where we just took the lead by a run, that's a terrible move.  And he does it often.  Though i guess we don't always know who's available and who isn't.

I didn't read the article there, but yeah, all they had to do was to part ways after this season and say "We thank Don for his service over the 4 years of his contract, which has now concluded.  We've decided to move a different direction for manager going forward and expect to begin the search process immediately."  And that'd be that.

Apparently they like what he's doing and think he can move this team forward.

EDIT:  Just read the "article" - WTF was that - I kept scrolling expecting there to be more, and nope, it just ended.  Like uhh?  What was the point of that "article"....no... blurb?

The only other thought is - maybe they don't see themselves contending until 2022 and will bring their guy in THEN, and not take Mattingly's option for year 3?

It won't surprise me if this team win all the remaining games of this season, because Rojas was happy, Donnie was happy and all the other players were happy because they all like Rojas and Donnie.

But the thing is...talent.

This doesn't really fit because his contract was up now so now was the time to make the move smoothly without backlash of firing a guy. And you'd also want their guy to come in as soon as possible, you wouldn't necessarily want your guy to come in the one year you think you'll be competing because there can be an adjustment period needed as well.

Yeah it's just a bunch of bogus speculation that they provide no evidence for. Pretty much a hit piece to attack the Marlins for the very thing they have always attacked the Marlins for not doing.

If they followed their own narratives the media would be universally commending the Marlins for trying this even if Mattingly isn't the greatest. But of course this is more proof of moving the goal posts. The Marlins can't ever win.

Not defending Chen at all, but the guy is on the roster and Donnie can't exactly burn everyone else to avoid him. Especially in a season that is a lost cause.

You would't be firing him if you just don't pick up his option for year 3.  Keep him the 2 guaranteed years, not the 3rd option year.

I agree with you - now was the time to just cut ties amicably (the press would've skewered you anyway, acting like they hired him yesterday and fired him today, so you ignore that).  I'm just throwing out an alternate thought.

Mish can be a dope sometimes.

I'm usually on board with Mish's thoughts, but his comments yesterday (Abreu/Markakis) and acting like Mattingly should've won 100 games with this roster today seems odd.
