I think it's the time to play this game !!!

Is there a list of all the expected free agents?

we only need two starting pitchers

Looking through that list I don’t see any players that the Marlins would have a shot at signing that would be considered headliners.  Rendon isn’t coming here.  That isn’t to say there aren’t players that would come here and contribute.  The key is identifying the right players.  There will probably be a handful of signings that will be considered “nice” by some and a waste by others.  They do need some players though.  More money will be there.  It should be a different winter this year than the previous two Jeter winters

Why would Rendon not come to Miami?

He’s going to be expensive.  He is going to have a bunch of better teams wanting to sign him. He is going to want to play for a good baseball team with people in attendance to clap for him.

Also I think Washington brings him back. It would be a blow for them to lose Harper and Rendon back to back

Factoring in renewals and arby, their 2020 payroll is under $50 mil I believe. They have to spend this off-season and not just a couple of minimum deals. It'd send an awful message if the payroll goes down from 2019 to 2020.

It's worth noting they did try to sign LeMahieu this off-season, but LeMahieu chose NYY over a rebuilding team, which is fair, but it shows the FO is willing to spend on the right free agents. And in retrospect now, LeMahieu would definitely have been a good pickup.

Thank you. This is a good example of what I wanted to convey.  The team has to be good at finding this type.  The 2 WAR player that can turn a 5 WAR season in the right circumstances as LeMahieu did.  Rendon is already a solid 6-7 WAR player.  He’s going to be too expensive and won’t fit within the wage structure they’re trying to build here.  There will be a time in the future where paying for a 30 year old quality free agent makes sense.  I don’t think we are there just yet.  Maybe in two years.

I think this winter will be exponentially more pleasant than any winter we’ve seen since 2012

Elaborate? Like he wouldn't mind entertaining an offer to play in Miami or you making it sound like the Marlins have a legitimate chance to sign him?

But also gotta make sure they're the right moves and not just spending to say hey look we increased payroll!!!!

So in other words don’t do winter 2011

Of course. There is a way to accomplish that.

I already know some people will defend them if they don't spend a cent with that argument, but I won't. They can spend smart and still spend a little. Slashing the payroll to around 50 million would be a very bad message to the players and the fans.

I’m really not worried about it.  With all the contracts that have come off the books since they bought the team the time has finally come around to fill the roster out with new players.

All the talk around here, Twitter, in the media, from the front office has been focused so much on the minor leagues.  Restocking the minor leagues. It was the right thing to focus on. It’s gone on so long that I think a lot of fans may be locked in on that and penciling in opening day 2021 lineups using all marlins farm hands. This is obviously not going to happen.  It’s great we have a too five system now.  We will get our core out of there.  But some of those players will get flipped for other assets.  Free agents will be signed.  The restocking of the farm and shedding bad contracts phase has been completed.  We are entering a different phase and I would expect the moves we make to take a different feel.  It’s the only logical thing.

Yep I think so too.

We may one more year of "restcoking the farm and shedding bad contracts" with the high 2020 draft pick plus Chen still being on the books.

Since Chen is untradeable there are no more bad contracts to shed.  All the major league level trade chips are gone. There is no more restocking of the farm using major league pieces. The next phase has to be building the major league team and adding the right complimentary pieces to it.

Wow imagine not having Chen's contract on the books and only having $23 million in commitments. lol

I think the Marlins will do their due diligence and explore options. Winter Meetings should be exciting this upcoming off season so many things either go down during that time or shortly afterwards. I think Abreu would be a nice signing. Signing a decent outfield is a year stop gap certainly wouldn't hurt either. Even though Anderson is incredible whether you put him at RF or 3B I rather they just keep him at 3B.

Really sucks that Brinson once again didn't produce.

As @SilverBullet said the Chen deal has one year left on it.  He will probably play it out. We are clearing a lot this season.  More than enough to start adding pieces.  It wouldn’t be smart to go hog wild in one off season.

If offered the right amount of money, why wouldn’t Rendon sign with Miami?
