Players at that top tier don't probably see a functional difference between $120M and $100M, but the life experience of going to the playoffs is priceless. So some are willing to take a discount to make that possible.

I think the Marlins will do their due diligence and explore options. Winter Meetings should be exciting this upcoming off season so many things either go down during that time or shortly afterwards. I think Abreu would be a nice signing. Signing a decent outfield is a year stop gap certainly wouldn't hurt either. Even though Anderson is incredible whether you put him at RF or 3B I rather they just keep him at 3B.

Not really. I mean he's still a good player but his age does mean that he might have to take a relatively short term contract. Nobody is giving Abreu a massive long term deal at this point. It might be 2-3 years, maybe 4 at most.

And if it's front loaded, it accomplishes several things - it keeps payroll at a reasonable number, but also makes him more affordable to us later on, when the big signings need to happen.

 

I think we'll see another year of Neil Walker type signings, before making a big splash next offseason.  It obviously didn't work out in his case, but get vets with some upside, and try to flip them at the deadline.

 

I also would like to go ahead and start signing a core longterm & cheap - Anderson, Alfaro, and a few of the pitchers.

That’s got nothing to do with it. The front office blew up the old team because the wage structure was screwed up. The requisite contract to sign Rendon doesn’t fit in the teams timeline.  Yes they can afford it.  But it would blow up the wages their constructing.   Plus what makes you think too tier veteran free agents want to come here yet?  He’s not coming here for the same reason JT Realmuto didn’t entertain contract extension offers from the marlins.  The marlins will get back into the expensive free agent game but it’s not going to be with Rendon

-First and foremost:  MONEY.  There are countless examples of top tier players signing with non-top tier organizations. 

 

-no state income tax

 

-and the Marlins have the added bonus (that not all bottom tier organizations have), a clear vision for a successful rebuild.

If there is a player that is available now that is something the team could really use, you try and sign him. You don't wait an extra year when he no longer exists. It isn't a one year contract anyway.

I’m very confident that the player would accept a at market value (or above market value , especially if front loaded) contract. 

 

I’m much less confident that Sherman/Jeter will offer the player said contract.

We are partly in agreement.  I love Rendon.  Who wouldn’t?  I also don’t think the Marlins have him in their plans this winter.  

 

Where we differ are that I don’t think Rendon would ever come here because a player of his caliber is going to get multiple offers and he’s going to take one from a contender. I’m also thinking we aren’t at that stage yet to offer him but after going back and forth on this I’m beginning to maybe change my mind on that one.
