March 17, 20224 yr So I was working on a bullpen article for another website on the world wide web and I realized: as things stand right now, the Marlins have one of the worst bullpens in baseball. Combine the lack of talent with a manager who is legendarily bad at managing a bullpen, and this is going to be a long season. The team will have excellent starting pitching, and the offense should be decent at scoring runs. But with this bullpen and this manager? We could still lose 85-90 games.
March 17, 20224 yr If they get off to a slow start, I think Don will be fired quick so the manager factor there may not end up being part of it. As for the pen itself, they clearly need more and hopefully aren't done working on it.

I think they'll still be bottom 1/3 in run production as the roster stands.

Probably middle of the pack in the league, with which that starting rotation SHOULD be a good formula for a lot of wins, but that bullpen with Mattingly managing it is going to challenge the Phillies bullpen that set the record for worst bullpen in baseball history.

I guess unless you consider Roman Quinn major league caliber. You'd think with the starting pitching staff they have, they'd want a guy roaming center that would help their biggest strength. But what do I know! Bullpens are weird. The Marlins are lacking on paper, and they need a high leverage guy so bad. But they could just luck into some good bullpening because well, thats often how bullpens are. Still would be nice to have someone reliable at the back end. I mean the options left are what? Kenley Jansen? Which isnt a bad option mind you. Or they can make a trade and give up propsects to get someone they could have just gotten for money.

Situation: late in the game after Anthony Bender has been brought in to pitch the 5th inning, you need a guy that can get you a strike out. You look over to the bullpen and...just start crying, then you lose the game.

I don't think our bullpen was bad last year. It was misused and abused by Don, and that makes it look worse. There are some nice arms in the pen, but we do need that legit closer with experience to anchor the pen.

I guess we'll find out if the DH-filled year of 2020 was a fluke or not with Mattingly at the helm. He still found ways to make weird moves, but many of the pointless double switch opportunities were taken out of his hands.

March 19, 20224 yr Marlins had the 7th best bullpen in baseball last year (5 WAR-excellent) and it projects as a top 10 unit again this year. They could use another arm (especially a lefty), but this thread is way over the top. You know how good this bullpen is going to be when it's Floro, Bender, Sixto, Cabrera, Meyer, and Pop in July? Next.
