Stallings

He is hitting .187 with a .487 OPS...

At what point, do the Marlins just release him for being a terrible hitter?  It's like having a pitcher batting in the line-up...

Play Fortes, let Stallings work on his shit in the off-season and let them duke it out for the starting gig in the Spring.

Someone needs to get this through Don's skull

They should send him down if that’s possible. Bring him up after the all star game if he shows any signs of life. Just send a message.

With Stallings, it’s easy to keep him up here because they can just credit him for Sandy, and, to a lesser extent, Pablo having their best seasons so far.

Even though it probably has very little to do with it, this is how they’ll justify Stallings.

Also, to be fair, the alternative is Peyton Henry who makes Stallings look like Mike Piazza anyway.

Agree. At least give fortes a chance to play consistently.

We fucked up getting stallings, everyone knew he couldn't hit. But his defense was a mirage as well. I think he is throwing out 14% of basestealers.

Front office thought controlling years were worth it and missed the obvious that he's pretty old already and regressing.

We traded 2 decent prospects for him. At least let him be the back up instead of releasing him. LOL

Stallings has helped our pitching staff. Calls good games and that's good enough to keep him. In today's game vs mets you could see Scott struggling finding the strike zone throwing wild fastballs and Stallings started dialing in sliders inside that although weren't strikes, were still generating swings and misses.

Stallings is all about handling the pitching staff. Record years for both Sandy and Pablo. I gotta say he's not great at throwing out runners or hitting, but he seems savy in calling a good game.

Those prospects are not doing too well in AA right now and Zach Thompson has also struggled this year. Lose lose trade, baby!

Sandy and somewhat Pablo, yes. Stallings has done well with them.

He's done poorly with the rest. Rogers with Stallings has been bad. Rogers with Henry was good. Why haven't they tried Rogers with Fortes yet?

Brax and Castano have used Fortes every start lately. They're doing quite well.

I have zero issues with Stallings being Sandy's personal catcher as they've CLEARLY meshed well together if that's what Sandy wants.  I don't feel as if Pablo has been THAT much better overall (especially if you take away his hot start) with Stallings.  I am all for Fortes starting and Stallings being Sandy's dude and also being the starter on getaway days/early afternoon starts.

I know Fortes wasn't fantastic in the minors either but I hardly see him as a downgrade to Stalling's offensive production (and you get better speed and power to boot)

Kim Ng, Don Mattingly, Jacob Stallings…

Would they have jobs without Sandy Alcantara right now?

It’s probably unfair to say that Stallings has had zero impact calling games. I’m sure he has, but I really think the impact is minimal. If he were elite at calling games, I think Trevor Rogers would be doing better too, yet he’s not.

Realistically, what has turned Sandy from good to great is the evolution of his changeup, which started last year before Stallings got here.

Early on in his career, Sandy would struggle some against lefties because he didn’t really have an out pitch for them. He would do a lot better against righties because he had the 2-seam/slider combo for them.

Last year, he started using the changeup more than 20% of the time for the first time in his career and he became a more complete pitcher.

I feel like Sandy would be doing this now regardless of the catcher.

And regarding Pablo, has he even gotten better this year? He’s basically doing what he did last year. He’s a good #2 — at worst, a #3 on a very good staff and has been for more than this year.

I feel the same way about Sandy too but since we still need a backup C...and he clearly does work well with Stallings (regardless if it's actually Stallings game calling or not) I am more than happy to let Sandy keep his preferred catcher.  Reassess next season.  Basically, if it ain't broke...dont fix it.

If Stallings' game calling was so good it makes up for the fact he hits like a pitcher and has been mediocre defensively... let him call the game from the bench (It's not)

I’d be fine with that too, yeah.

Stallings can be to Sandy what Jeff Mathis was to Jose, I guess.

I wanted to type "trade him" but who would take him right now?
