I'm pretty sure that the Marlins marketing Hosmer to the community as a Miami kid will bring 0-2 additional fans to the ballpark to see him. As a side note, not addressing what you said, but just in general, I never liked the argument that signing certain players will bring fans out to the ballpark. I mean it definitely could happen for a few games, but as I said once in the past, the Marlins could sign Mike Trout, Justin Verlander and Willson Contreras but if they're on a 10 game losing streak, people aren't showing up. But take the current roster and have the Marlins on a 10 game winning streak and you're getting 20,000+ fans a night.

I was half joking about marketing Hosmer to the community because there's always been an attempt at marketing specific players to this community because of hometown or Hispanic connections. But I do think there is a truth to that, it's not all BS. Yes winning is important but I do believe Jose Fernandez being Cuban is significant to the community. And I know Jose was a star but I'll go the other direction, if this current Marlins team was any good, I do believe Jorge Soler would be embraced by the community as well. With that said it's not always about walk up or single game ticket sales either. I think it has a lot to do with season ticket sales especially in the offseason. If you tell real baseball fans, those who would actually consider season ticket plans, that a big star is coming to your town guaranteed, that's gonna definitely sell some season ticket packages. It's showing a commitment from both sides. The team shows a commitment and then the fans show their commitment ahead of time as well. Again, winning is important, but if the Marlins signed Mike Trout I'm sure season ticket sales would get a surge.

I thought of this too. It's not always the actual cities or teams, sometimes you get traded to a downgrade of a team and if you have the right to decline it then why wouldn't you? I always find it weird when a guy gets traded to a worse team and has to do an interview saying how excited they are to join the new team.
August 2, 20224 yr Eric Hosmer will be on a different roster by the end of the day. Padres have been trying to move him for a while. They also need to move some salary off their books for this year. I don't necessarily blame the Cardinals for not basically trading away the best established player of any other teams offers PLUS premium prospects on top of it. Cardinals also dont really have anyone to play CF if they move Carlson as well. That said, I'd rather have Juan Soto, but I'd have wanted to hold onto one of Carlson, Gorman or Walker and from what I hear, Nationals were demanding all 3, which is weird considering what they actually got, so that may not be the case. Based on what the Nationals got, if the Cardinals offered something like: Gorman Libertore Wynn You can/should have added Alec Burlson or even Brendon Donovan and probably some other pitching prospect. I dont think the Cardinals offered all 3 of Gorman, Libertore and Wynn however. I am pretty sure they didnt offer up a Dylan Carlson and really why should they? The Padres didnt send an established big leaguer either. You'd probably have needed a lower A prospect however and a guy like Baez would have made a lot of sense. Oh well. I'm sure Mo was just being typical cheap ass Mo and not willing to send the cream of the crop. For the record, I'd have held out with Walker and Carlson as well. Carlson because of positional need. Walker because he is going to be that good I think.

I"m not one of them. I'd rather just go pick up Brett Phillips off the trash heap to play in CF. If there is one thing about the Cardinals, defense is kinda important to the franchise.
August 2, 20224 yr Well, Red Sox last place in AL East. Still much better as a player to go to the Red Sox than the 2022 Nationals I would imagine.

August 2, 20224 yr Hahaha. It's funny with this trade.. It feels like half of the people are saying that it's the biggest transfer of talent in MLB history, and the other half is comparing it to the Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers trade.

Highly unlikely that any of those prospects come close to having the impact a Soto has in your lineup.

Well, yes, the Marlins could not sign those three guys, of course. I was just using that as an extreme example to make a point that the thing that will get Marlins fans to the park is being a winning team/being in the playoff chase regardless of who is on the roster, or the other thing that will bring people out is an exciting pitcher who is making a national splash like Dontrelle or Jose, but just for the games that the pitcher starts. Based on my observation being a Marlins fan since the beginning of the 2003 season. I remember at the beginning of that 03 season they were practically giving away tickets and people weren’t coming out, I remember going to a game in May of that year at Pro Player Stadium and tickets in the “Fish Tank” section were $4. 😂 And still like 10,000 a game. And by September of that year the Marlins were getting like 25,000+ most nights being in the Wild Card chase, if I remember correctly. I truly believe that with this current roster, in the very unlikely event the Marlins go on a 12 game winning streak and by middle of September are 8-10 games over .500 and are first or second in the Wild Card chase, that they are getting 25,000+ attendance most home games.

This market supports/comes out for a winner and doesn’t come out for much else.
August 3, 20224 yr Long post ahead, just writing my thoughts about the Marlins attendance in the middle of the night, because why not? 😂 Nothing important and stuff we have talked about before, so skip this if you want. TL;DR - The Marlins will not get bigger attendance unless they are around 10 games over .500 or make the playoffs, regardless of having star players or where most of the population is from, since most people in Miami mainly just care about things that are trendy and buzzing to not miss out on it. 4 hours ago, rmc523 said: This market supports/comes out for a winner and doesn’t come out for much else. Yes, definitely, and for baseball that is 100% true. The big exception is the Dolphins, but I mean with only 8 games a year or so at home and with all the history and loyalty of Dolphins fans, that’s understandable. The Heat have done really well in attendance, but of course that is because they have been an overall good team since 2003 when Dywane Wade came, I know they had some decent seasons prior to that, but they were pretty hit or miss throughout most of the 80’s and 90s. Once D-Wade came and then Shaq and then of course the LeBron and Bosh etc. So the Heat have been playing exciting basketball for quite a few years and winning a lot, so of course they have had very good attendance for a lot of years now. But also I feel like basketball in a lot of ways appeals to a different type of crowd in Miami, including a lot of people who will use sitting in courtside seats as a status symbol and so forth, and of course in Miami there are plenty of people like that as anyone from Miami will know very well. 😂 Then we come to the Marlins which as we all know is near last place in attendance every year for as long as most of us can remember. We’ve all discussed many times the reasons for the low attendance. The thing that is funny to me is that over the years I have always seen the argument that because of all the people in South Florida of Latin American decent, that baseball should be very popular here. And I also saw that same argument for the Miami soccer team Inter Miami FC. Guess what? Inter Miami FC is in last place out of all the MLS teams with an average attendance of 12,000 per game, which for comparisons sake, the Atlanta MLS team is averaging around 47,000 per game, which to be fair they play in the Falcons stadium of 67,000 capacity, and the Miami soccer stadium holds 20,000, but as Michelle Kaufman from the Miami Herald wrote in an article back in June, if the Atlanta team can get 47,000 average attendance there is no reason the Miami MLS team shouldn’t be selling out every night at a 20,000 seat stadium. Here’s the article if anyone is interested, she briefly mentions the Marlins attendance. https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/more-sports/inter-miami-climbs-standings-but-still-ranks-last-in-attendance-that-is-unacceptable-opinion/ar-AAXWd02 That’s why -and I’m sorry if I offend anyone with my opinion- but that’s why I never have bought the argument that signing certain players like Correa or Puig or whoever, will really make a huge difference in attendance. Of course, you might see a small bump for a bit, and maybe some more season ticket sales, but I think that will just be people coming because of the novelty of having a new star player(s) but once that team with the star players is 10 games under .500 in July, a lot of those people will stop coming for the most part. 😂 Doesn’t matter what descent most of the population is, a lot of people in Miami (and every other city, of course, but I've noticed a little bit more) have a big level of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). What I mean by that is that say for example the Marlins were to make the playoffs, people will come in droves if something is buzzing and trending so that they can take pictures and Tik Tok videos and act like they are lifelong Marlins fans, and rooting for their team, even though you know that most of them they never cared in their life until like 5 minutes after they made the postseason. Of course I’m speaking in general terms here, and I know that there are many thousands of actual true Marlins fans who continue following this team year after year of losing records and still coming back to watch again every new season. But yeah, put an exciting team on the field who can actually win games and get to the playoffs, and people will definitely show up. That’s all I’ve been asking for since like 2004. Which, to be fair, over of course that time, Marlins have had a number of seasons with fun and exciting rosters and people did show up a little bit more often in some of those years, but never enough to ever get the Marlins out of the bottom 5-10 in attendance most years. And with the number of people that live in South Florida there should be sell outs every night, but it won’t happen unless the Marlins are like 10 games over .500 and those Fish are getting in the playoffs or at least very close in the chase, like 1 or 2 games back close in September. End of rant. 😂 Edited August 3, 20224 yr by SirFishFan
