I'm the most pro-Castro guy here, but Kendall is just a damn good hitter, and he's a prototype hitter for PPS. The guy could win a betting title playing for us. I'm going to have to agree with you completely, but I'll also play the devil's advocate here:

 

Why would you want to add a 3rd 1 or 2 hole hitter to our lineup. All everyone has been pointing out is the production we lost from letting Lee and Pudge and yes, even Encarnacion go. Kendall is a great catcher in many respects, but he would be a guy who would complete a team like the Cubs or A's (someone looking to fill the leadoff spot), not us. I say give Castro a chance because he's been talked about being "the next catcher" for this team for so long, he's got to have something going for him.

He has lost a lot of his speed due to injuries and doesnt want to try to steal much anymore because he doesnt want to reaggevate any injury.

 

Also you say you rather have the tandom of Castro and Redman who have not proved themselves over the proven kendall. He gets on base most of the time and would fit perfectly in this lineup.

 

The only thing they will lose with getting kendall is power and that is not even a certainty because Castro has yet to play a full season which the pitchers will focus more on him and find his weaknesses.

 

Kendall is a great catcher which i would love to have wearing teal this season.

Kendall can Move into Pudges 3rd Spot into the lineup with a Better avg, OBP.

I don't want Kendall near this team. I did not form my opinion on one interview. He has a bad attitude problem and has shown it in the past. He will ruin the chemistry of this team and his price tag inflated for his actual worth.

 

Redmond and Castro are two excellent catchers...Kendall is going downhill on his career.

kendall's contract is huge. even at half price, it is NOT a bargain for us. castro/redmond is MORE than adequate for how little they cost us. hell, castro alone would be more than adequate for what he'll cost us.

I think this is what we should do.

 

1. IF pudge signs with LA then we go trade for lo duca.

2. IF we don't want lo duca then trade for kendall.

3. IF duca or kendall doesen't come to the fish then we get mudge back.

Something like that....I don't know.

It is foolish not to get the best catcher available. No matter what his name is, or his history with this team. If you want to get to the playoffs again, put your money on a catcher. Think about it. 75% of what goes on in the field is between the pitcher and the catcher. :w00t Your bullpen is fine!

Kendall has one thing Redmond doesn't. It's patience at the plate. Please direct me to the fantasy world where Redmond has a .400 OBP. Also why not three leadoff-type hitters? Isn't that better than any other catcher that would fill the 6 or 7-hole? Would you really give up 70 points of OBP, 60 points of batting average and whatever speed Kendall has left for a slow old catcher that would maybe a half-dozen more home runs?

 

This all of course depends on what happens with Castro. Beinfest only has 7-9 million to spend on a lefty reliever and outfielder, and keep some in reserve for moves in July. He's not going to make a move unless he's forced to. And if comes to it I'd much rather take Kendall at $4M this year and 6.5 in 2007 (he could always be traded before then) than Paul LoDuca, or a Pat Borders.

Kendall is a contact hitter and has speed. Why not get him? You want to put two catchers who havent started much games in their career to play while this team wants to win again? If you want to win, you need to go with kendall who has proven himself how good he really is hitting and catching.

Though i like the idea of Kendall, is this really possible?

even if we pay only half of his salary, it's still a load on our cap, leaving us without much money for a lefty specialist for the 'pen, or players that we may need in the middle of the season.

 

Don't get me wrong- i'd love to have kendall, his stats speak for themselves, but only at the right price.

 

Maybe if we deferred some of his contract money into the latter years, it would be feasable (sp?)

I say the Marlins sign every significant Pirate player left. I want us to be a full fledged single-a team.
