Marlins Hire Gabe Kapler as AGM

The Marlins have reached an agreement to hire former Phillies and Giants manager Gabe Kapler as an assistant general manager under new president of baseball operation Peter Bendix, reports Craig Mish of SportsGrid and the Miami Herald. San Francisco dismissed Kapler following the 2023 season, hiring future Hall of Famer Bob Melvin in his place. Mish adds that Kapler has been looking for a new challenge in baseball operations since being let go by the Giants and was also in the running to become the Red Sox’ head of baseball operations before they ultimately hired another former big leaguer, Craig Breslow.

Glad it's not as a coach, I'm not a fan of Kapler in the dugout but I'd be interested as to what he can offer in the front office.

Also with Skip and Kapler together, Marlins chances in a fight at the winter meetings just increased quite a bit.

Kitchen is so crowded

Did they announce hirings on the cooking staff? I only saw news about front office hirings.

I know players not what we only need, but at this point of the off-season I really can't enjoy these non-player signings.

Bruce is going to turn Kapler and Skip into dual role player/manager and player/front office guys to save money.

Just  consider them as such now and start trying to figure out where they fit on the roster.

At this rate maybe they sign Ohtani as Executive Officer of Baseball Operations

And he would report to the Director of Baseball Operations.

who would report to the Senior Manager of Baseball Operations

No, he's reporting to the fourteen assistant GMs.

i guess if we have all the executives in baseball than nobody else can win executive of the year, watching the orioles win it probably put a shit in bruce's cheerios

Kapler interviewed for the Red Sox baseball operations position and we know the Marlins kept their PBO interviews under wraps, I wonder if Kapler was interviewed by the Marlins for PBO and maybe that started something that led to this hire?

It is possible, sure!

@SilverBullet has a picture of David Weathers on the bedside table next to his wife so she can look at it every morning and appreciate him. 😂

*See because @SilverBullet is well known for his opinion of David Weathers.. going so far as considering him the ugliest player in Baseball. 😂

If I'm not wrong have report said the Rays have a front office with the largest number of people among the league, maybe it's what Bruce wants to do and have a very big front office, but spend more in the FO may means spend less in the players.

Bruce likely hired Bendix with the intent of copying the Rays model so no surprise there.

the average salary of a GM is $300k, the average assistant GM make about $100k. the mlb league minimum for player is $700k. the whole baseball operations front office makes less than avi. bruce and bendix know they can be more efficient if they have a lot more people calculating wins per dollar spent than spending on players for wins. tbh its not a bad idea to get the best minds in analytics and metrics and scouting since they are still a lot more wins per dollar spent on the table this way. but copying the whole rays is kinda pathetic of bruce. theres always something that hasnt been discovered yet waiting. thats why joe maddon went obsolete, when he had the cutting edge he was a good manager but once everyone copied used his gimmicks, analytics, and sabermetrics he was obsolete. that could happen with bendix as well, all the rays still already have his notes and ideas.
