Marlins sign Darren Oliver

Featured Replies

what the hell...this guy sucks ass and should have recieved nothing more than a minor league deal.

I assume you'd rather have that bum - Scott Sanders???

Give Oliver a chance. He's a lefty, he's a veteran, he won 13 games last season and he will eat up innings.

Working with Rosey and pitching in PPS will straighten him out.

I also see him as being a positive influence on DW.

:hat

The problem is getting the W's until AJ is back.

we won throughout the season last year that has been proven. i think its just whether we'll get any wins once a.j. comes back. guys darren oliver is exactly what he show he is, "a decent fifth starter." dont expect him to very electrifying expect him to be a adequate fill in.

and i dont know if we;ll be getting may w' when a.j. comes back, i hope we do. but i have a feeling it will take him a while to getr back in to the groove

another thing, has the guy been officialy singed yet or not?

because on marlins.com it just shows that theyre close but nothing official

damn i just noticed my signature is a bit outdated, whatever f*** it i'll leave it there for memories

He will be an improvement over Almanza.

That's all that matters. Oliver will replace Michael Tejera's starts (5.40 ERA) and Almnza's relief appearances.

P.S. Wins are affected by a whole team, pitcher included. ERA, hits, strikeouts and walks allowed by the entire defense.

MAJOR upgrade.

*scoffs*

This guy is an older and probably even lesser version of Tejera at this point.

We could have spent this money somewhere else. As someone else mentioned, the fact that Jose Lima got a minor league deal and this toolbox gets 750 grand is sad.

Oh well, when push comes to shove, Darren Oliver should help the rotation...

for the 'Topes.

I don't know why people are getting all bent out of shape over signing Oliver when some posters were upset over missing out on Glendon Rusch.

Oliver is a servicable Major League pitcher. He pitched realtively well last year, and he won't be asked to lead this staff or anything. He'll make a few starts and then pitch out of the pen. Hopefully he'll be better at getting lefties out than anyone out of the pen last year. If you look at his stats, he's probably more suited as a reliever at this point in his career anyway.

In innings 1-3 of his starts:

.219 BAA, .637 OPS against.

So he does a good job when facing the order the first time around. Hopefully this translates into him being an effective reliever 1 or 2 innings at a time.

guys, oliver is heavily a groundball pitcher.

he doesn't benefit from PPS as others might, and he might even do worse.

he is the ideal sort of pitcher for coors since he doesn't pop up the ball too much, but he is not the ideal sort of guy who would benefit from playing here. the mark redman analogy is totally off.

last year he was much better at coors than on the road. that tells you something, though it's probably not very statistically significant.

he's supposed to be our crappy #5 guy, so i guess i can deal with him. the $750k is the part that sucks.

why wouldn't a groundball pitcher benefit from our defense? the rockies defense wasn't so great last year in the infield.

its the cost moreso than the signing itself that bothers me.

that is a riduclious price to pay for oliver, when he made less than half that last year.

he should of been signed for a minor league deal and a major league invite.

if he earns a spot in the spring then he can have is 750K

Okay Daseypoo (boy am I in trouble now :whistle ) given the Marlins felt they needed another starter who could transfer into the pen later on (or will have trade value come the first trading deadline) who else that's out there would you say the Fish should have signed?

You could make the argument that the Marlins waited too long to pick up an experienced arm but I don't see much left that's under a million.

Personally I'm more concerned at the makeup of our bullpen and the potential of having three lefties there. For me that's not a positive, others may disagree.

???

well i would prefer to give him a minor league deal with an invite to spring training.

open up the competition with him, any other scrubs you bring in and young guys you might have in the minors.

i have seen darren oliver pitch many times.

he is only valuable maybe in the bullpen. he has been figured out for about 10 years now.

is he worth 750,000......... i dont think so, not outright to start the season.

i know we all hate tejera....but is he really that much of an upgrade over tejera?

i would of liked the front office to address the left handed specialist a lot earlier in the winter and found a much higher quality lefty than to have to 'settle' which is what i fear the team did with oliver.

Rockies had originally offered Oliver 900,000 a year with incentives which he turned down

And than the Giants or Diamondbacks im not sure which offered him 2 years 2 million.

all this from the Rockies board.

I was just going to mention that we weren't the only team looking at Oliver. So he has a little more value than some are giving him credit for. Had Oliver signed earlier, he probably could have topped $1 million.

i forget how watered down pitching in this league is these days......

that and a left hander who can throw the bal over the plate can pitch till they are 80.

ahh....supply and demand.

i have seen oliver pitch more than enough. you hold your judgements. I will hold mine.

he sucks. no ballpark is going to fix that.

Wait a sec - we have one of the better defenses in all of baseball behind him. How does this NOT benefit Oliver - I will give you a pass on this one, Alk. Smokin too much crack... :D

Wins dont mean too much when your a pitcher because if you dont get run support theres no way you can win.? I'm sure Oliver had great run support. As a 5th starter he isnt bad but I would have liked to seen Tejera get a chance.

Tejera will get a chance. I like seeing someone who comes off the mound with a W. Plus, Oliver logged 180 innings, which is a VERY vital stat because he saves the bullpen. This is an excellent signing based on the dollars available. Heck, we are getting a guy similar to Redman and he costs 3 mil less. 180 innings? I thought the workhorses in the league, barring injury, pitched at least 200+ innings. Though he does certainly have durablility. Mr. Smarty. 180 innings from a fifth starter is very good. Marlins had one guy reach 200 innings last year, can you name him? Don't question me on this move. Yes, Oliver is similar to Redman. Redman provided innings and was fortunate that the Marlins defense is outstanding and that he pitched in Pro Player. Oliver too will benefit from our great defense and big ball park.

Oliver is a tremendous pickup. Since when are you so bent about 750k? It's not your money, so why do you care what the guy makes. He was 13-11 last year, and regardless of the ERA, if Oliver went through arbitration with that record, he makes 4 million. So he is a bargain. With the Marlins defense behind him and Pro Player Stadium being so darn big, yes, he is a great pickup. Look at how many homers Redman gave up in the second half of last year. Oliver is essentially the same guy as Redman for 3 million less dollars. Get a clue on how the market works.

i know we all hate tejera....

I don't. Personally, I don't know why everyone here is drinkin' the "michael tejera haterade".

Wouldn't be surprised if he had a breakout year this year.

Wouldn't be surprised if he had a breakout year this year. It will be surprising if Tejera makes the team. The guy simply isn't that good. Lefties clobber him. He can't get anyone out. Has a good curveball but nothing else. The pitch he threw into the dugout at Wrigley in the NLCS is all you need to know about Tejera. It's not that he's hated. It's that he isn't very good.

Neu, Benitez, Fox.....The Marlins are going to need somebody else in the bullpen, and unless you like a bunch of 6-year minor league free agents, I'd stick with Tejera.

Tejera isn't any better than a six-year guy. He basically isn't a major league pitcher. If he had talent, Jack would trust him. If Jack sits you on the end of the bench, there is a reason. That's why Helling is gone. We saw how horrible he can be in the playoffs. Giants and Yanks clobbered him. 89 mph meat. Doesn't cut it for a righty. As a lefty, Oliver will be fine. Tejera is fighting for a spot on the team. Notice how the Marlins didn't even want to give Tejera a shot, they quickly got Oliver. Ask yourself why? Of course pitching depth is needed. But if the FO thought Tejera was the answer, he would be given a shot. Let me ask you, what do you like about Tejera? He isn't very good. Give me some examples of when he was good? I'm not talking about in 2002 either. Sure he won a start vs. the Expos. But he was lit up by everyone in the second half. The Cubs beat us in extra innings as soon as Tejera gets in the game, Glanville hits a triple off him. In the NLCS vs. the Cubs at Wrigley, he panicks and throws the ball into the dugout. Not exactly the nerves you want in a regular.
