Also, unless you're stealing 50 bases a year, OPS is a terrific stat. OPS can give you an idea about a players abilitys but it doesn't tell the whole story. I go more by batting average because a player can have a high ops because they walk alot but if they are batting 250 year after year they are obviously not very good hitters. You have to build a lineup with different kinds of players not just high OPS guys. Walking is not a skill so I don't really care if somebody walks alot unless they are my lead off hitter then I don't care how they got on base. For the rest of the lineup I like a guy who knows how to handle the stick.Of course drawing walks is a skill. Some guys swing at pitches out of the strike zone more often than others. This is why you're botheringng everyone. Walks are only important for a lead off man. Anyone else in the lineup needs to drive in runs and you don't do that with walks unless the bases are loaded. So the farther down the lineup you hit the less walks you should be taking and you need to be focused on driving in runs. The other team would love it if Stanton walked 4 times every game. The meat of the order has to swing the big stick and drive in the speedy top of the order. That is why ops is overrated to me. Average home runs and RBI are still the most important statistics that is why there is a leader board for them. Nobody cares about who leads the league in walks lol.

Hmmm... I'll check it out but I was always told differently. How come there are not many pitchers who throw screwballs anymore? And what about palm balls? A palm ball is a change up pretty much right?

Yelich does not need to beef up. He OPSed over .900 last year with just 12 homers. Just to give you an idea. (going off the top of my head) And Cody is 195, so my mistake there. Yeah Cody is country strong. Definitely beefcake. I hope your right about Yelich but man I would be so much more comfortable with him starting every day if he didn't have the body of Eric Reed.

Cody is like 5"10' but he is almost 200 pounds he is a bit beefcake like Uggla. Yelich has to put on weight if he is going to hit for big power consistently and not have injury troubles. Conditioning is very important in sports.if he never puts on the weight he can still e a Wade Boggs type of hitter and that's cool with me because Ozuna and Stanton will do the monster mash around him.

Well it has the movement of a screwball check it out. His fasty is a bit screwy lol. Lots of movement. Jim Mecir I forgot about. A lefty can throw a true screwball because of the side that it breaks on. A righty can throw a back door slider that acts like a screwball but its almost always thrown on accident.

Turner has a screwball? no righthander can throw a true screwball but turner throws a pitch very similar although it is his 2 seemer fasty. it breaks like a screwball though watch the movement. hopefully they have the true center field view on tv tonight because that is when it can really be seen. unless you are right behind homeplate live then you can see how it breaks. it's cool. I think the last marlin pitcher to throw a real screwball was Jim Corsi lol.

We had no interest in trading Willis in 05. If the trade would have improved the team (and it clearly would have at the time), then the Marlins absolutely had an interest in trading Willis after the 2005 season. That's the thing. I don't think the Marlins front office thought it would've CLEARLY helped us. I don't think the public opinion at the time was that Granderson/Verlander>Willis. It was that cut and dry. Nobody was saying that without a doubt two players with barely any time spent in the majors were CLEARLY better than a two time all star and reigning Cy Young runner up. I can't say what the Marlins would have been thinking. We don't know if the trade was even offered. However, I've given plenty of reasons already for why it was a no-brainer. To repeat, Verlander/Granderson might not have had much major league success but they were highly developed prospects who were MLB ready and universally regarded. The risk wasn't too significant. Yes, Willis was coming off of a Cy Young caliber season, but his future success was uncertain on account of his dependency on deceptive delivery rather than impeccable command/stuff. He wasn't the model of stability and consistency. People knew this at the time, that's why most people in the tread I posted were in favor of pulling the trigger. You just don't get it do you? YOu have to make trades in the PRESENT ok? You can't trade a player and then be like oh nevermind give back that player cause these prospects aren't to good like we thought. It doesn't work that way. Could you imagine how it would be if that is how it was in real life in trades? It is a risk every trade is and unless you have money to spend like crazy it is hard so hard to build a great team and it takes time. Give this team some time this is the FIRST YEAR of the reset and rebuilding!!!! it will take time. Let me ask you something.. Yelich is a five tool player. He'll be consistently good in just about everything. He'll steal some bases, hit for average, show some pop and play stellar defense, but he doesn't exactly excel in any one thing. Back when he was a 1st base prospect out of high school there were high end comparisons to John Olerud as a hitter. I wouldn't be shocked in the slightest if Yelich's ceiling is in the mold of where John Olerud's career was at. I forgot to mention in my original post that this team has a ton of options. If Marisnick starts to produce amazing stats in the minor at some point and Morrison doesn't work out (and we decide NOT to trade Stanton), it wouldn't surprise me if Stanton is moved to 1st base at some point IF he continues to suffer from injuries. Another option is to put Yelich there considering he's played 1st base before (although I prefer Yelich in the outfield as it adds to his value). We have a great deal of options long term, and some of these options will bust out. The important part is to find the few players who bust out. Find the one guy who bursts onto the scene unexpectedly and becomes a star for your team. Whatever I wrote earlier is going to turn out wrong, because minor league prospects are completely unpredictable. That's one of the biggest problems with what the Marlins did (other than giving up on a long term plan and giving a big middle finger to the fan base). They're banking their long term future on prospects, many of them middle of the line prospects currently who we have no idea whether they'll become major leaguers or bust out in the minors. That's true. The only thing I don't like about Yelich is that he doesn't have a very nice body. He really needs to pack on some pounds or I worry that he will be on the disabled list for 50 games a year. I don't trust skinny players like him usually but since i have seen him play and look dominate at the plate I just hope he can get a little more beefcake. That worries me also about Heccheverria to because he also doesn't have a very good body and needs to pack it on. He will never hit for any power as long as he is that skinny but he is here to play defense and hit 7th or 8th. He is Ozzy Smith basically. If Yelich can become John Olerud that would be killer but I see him more as a Wade Boggs type of hitter but with alot more power if he can beef it up. DEFINITELY not worth the money he is being payed. Verlander is good but he is also not worth the money he makes. In fact even though reggie abercrombie never figured it out for some reason he was considered just as good as granderson at the time as a prospect. Its funny how on our forums that whenever theres a topic about a certain player, it ALWAYS ends up in a debate/argument about a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT player. Jesus Christ people. And all I am saying is that Coghlan should get a chance at 3base and if we can get fransicso for minor leagues depth for nothing then GREAT. Have to try coghlan at 3rd first though an give him a chance before putting a question mark there.

Did I not already show you that this team needs to play nearly .500 ball the rest of the season to avoid 100 losses? Not happening. Yelich isn't a superstar. He's going to be an average outfielder when he first gets called up and will eventually develop into a really nice outfield prospect. He's not Stanton when he was getting called up (aka a game changer). He's not going to change the complexion of this team. There are only two stars who are on this team. They are Giancarlo Stanton and Jose Fernandez. One of those guys is injured and probably out for a long time, and the other is a rookie and isn't going to see his numbers match his potential until at least year 3. At catcher we are below average (Brantly is a below average catcher currently. At his plateau he's a league average catcher). Long term Austin Barnes will probably be our starting catcher, but he's only at A+ ball and has a long way to go. Logan Morrison is a below average starting first baseman (Even at his best, he doesn't have nearly the power to compare to even league average 1B, and he stopped getting on base a lot when he left the minors). Donovan Solano is a bench player disguising himself as a starter. Derek Dietrich is a rookie who is currently going through tough stretches like he should and will do, and he should end the season near a low .700 OPS, but he's the guy who is our future starting 2B. Adeiny Hechavarria is batting .183. He's easily the worst hitting everyday player in baseball currently and doesn't belong anywhere near a starting lineup even with above average defensive abilities. Polanco is a waste at third base and is just there to fill time until we learn if Zack Cox can prove capable in the minors. Pierre is useless and will be gone once Yelich is ready or Stanton comes back from injury. Ruggiano is a 4th outfielder on a mediocre team and a starter caliber on a bad one like us. He's a poor man's Cody Ross and serves value as a platoon guy for some team next year that needs an extra outfielder. Marcel Ozuna is part of the team's future core, but he's obviously playing WAY over his head right now (just look at his minor league splits. He's a strike out machine). I like Ozuna, but he'll regress and it'll take at least a year or two for him to get his footing in the big leagues. Our starting pitching is filled with at least two guys who will be traded by July (Nolasco and Slowey) and a bunch of guys who belong in the minors or in the bullpen (Koehler, LeBlanc, Sanabia). Jacob Turner is raw as hell, but he is young and he'll learn. Still, his ceiling is as a #2 starter, more likely a 3 or 4. Alvarez is an unknown commodity, but based on his numbers for Toronto and in the minors he's probably another #3 starter long term. Jose Fernandez is a great young pitcher who will be our ace within the next year. Our bullpen is filled with guys who will be traded at the deadline (Webb/Dunn) and really young guys who are in no way sure things (Cishek/Ramos/Jennings). The best team we're going to put out on the major league roster isn't coming until mid 2014 or early 2015, and it might look like this... C: Barnes/Brantly 1B: Morrison (Probably somebody new) 2B: Dietrich SS: Some new Guy 3B: Cox LF: Ozuna/Marisnick CF: Yelich RF: Stanton SP: Fernandez/Rodon/Heaney/Turner/Nicolino Bullpen filled with guys like Ramos, Cishek, Eovaldi, Morey, Flynn, Descalfini, Hope, Conley, etc... And tons of these guys won't work out, so plans will obviously change. This team is in complete rebuild mode. There's probably only a handful of guys on the current roster that factor into the team's long term plans period. This also doesn't factor in the players we'll take in the 2013 draft (especially the 6th pick. I did factor Rodon #1 in 2014 to us already). Dim I think you are right about alot of your points but I think you are way off about Yelich. He will be a monster in the MLB. I wouldn't be surprised to see him lead the team in almost every offensive category at the end of the year even though he came up late. Stanton will probably lead in home runs if he comes back anytime soon. Your points are well thought out though and at least you gave good reasons why you think what you think. If he keeps down the number of pitches he throws each inning then he can throw more innings. Now that he is in the MLB for good he will get the best coaching possible and will learn to keep the pitch count down so he can go more innings. That is his main problem. He throws too many pitches each inning so he can't go more than 5 or 6 innings. He will get it together. He is too good to be a bullpen pitcher. If we would have traded Willis in 2005 for verlander and grander son this town would have gone BANANAS. Solano is a good player. Name me 15 2nd baseman you would rather have. You can't. I can name maybe 5 or 10. He is good enough as long as he isn't hitting third or cleanup. Watch the movement of his pitches and tell me he doesn't remind you a little bit of Greg Maddux. I am NOT saying he is just as good as Maddux so don't start on me penguinos. He just throws a similar style with similar velocity and gets a lot of bad swings cause of the movement of his screwball.

You just compared Donovan Solano to Luis Castillo. I know Castillo was a better player without a doubt I'm not saying that they are the same leek of player but they have similar skills. That's not to say that Solano will NEVER become the player that Castillo was but no at this point in his career I can't say he's as good as Castillo was because Luis is probably a first ballot hall of famer.

The PCL is murder on pitchers, as long as the command is there give him a shot. Right, and he's only walked 6 over his past 6 starts (39 IP). ERA is 3.00 in May so he's getting it together. I'm looking forward to watching Turner, before the season started I think the progression of Turner & Eovaldi were two of the biggest things to watch for me. They're 2 guys who if everything works out could make up a decent middle of the rotation.I totally agree bro. He has been good recently and now is the time to being him up when he's hit so it don't break his stride. Evoldi and him will be monsters I think. Evoldi will have rust though so he will need time to get up to speed but when he does.... Nolasco, Evoldi, turner is about as good as it gets in the National league.
