Texas shortstop Alex Rodriguez was chosen for the seventh time and Boston outfielder Manny Ramirez for the sixth time. Five first-time winners were announced by Hillerich & Bradsby Co., maker of Louisville Sluggers, including Boston third baseman Bill Mueller, the AL batting champion. St. Louis outfielder Albert Pujols, the NL batting champion, won for the second time. Players were picked by major league managers and coaches based on their offensive performance. Managers and coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players. Selections were based on a combination of offensive statistics, such as batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage, as well as general impressions of a player's offensive value. Other AL winners were Toronto first baseman Carlos Delgado, Seattle second baseman Bret Boone, Anaheim outfielder Garret Anderson, Toronto outfielder Vernon Wells, New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada and Seattle designated hitter Edgar Martinez. Other NL winners were Colorado first baseman Todd Helton, Montreal second baseman Jose Vidro, St. Louis shortstop Edgar Renteria and Florida third baseman Mike Lowell. Soriano has played 3 full years with the Yankees, which I think makes him arbitration eligible. I'd imagine with his offensive numbers, that's going to be close to $3 million.

Earl Weaver is probably my all-time favorite manager and I think he lives down here in Pembroke Pines. He believed in pitching, defense, and 3-run homers. He hated Intentional Walks and Sacrifice Bunts. And his run-in's with Ron Luciano were hilarious. I thought he was a lot older than 73 though. Last I saw him, he looked pretty bad.

The Marlins hit 23 HRs as a team in September 2003. That was 13th in the league.

Opening Day is going to be a tough ticket to get. Almost as tough as the World Series. Anybody know when 2004 Season Tickets go on sale? And what kind of plans they'll have? I'd like to buy a partial season ticket plan for next season, maybe all the Saturday games plus a few others or something similar.

Hey, let's give Hampton some credit. He won 4 games for us this year. Is anybody else tired of listening to Millar? He went to Boston, posted his lowest OPS since 1999, is sitting home for the World Series because his Red Sox lost a series that he helped them lose, and he's still getting all this press? I hated losing Millar. I was angry about that most of the season. It was one of the fews mistakes that Beinfest made, thinking that Hollandsworth could do the job in LF. But if Millar had stayed, I don't know that we'd be World Champs. He'd have done a good enough job in LF that we wouldn't have had to call up Miguel Cabrera. I don't think we make the post-season without Cabrera's energy, RBIs, and versatility.

Before the season, I wanted the Marlins to go after him but he was kinda exposed as the year went on as a player with some serious holes in his swing. He's really not a good left-handed bat because he can't hit right-handed pitching, particularly in 2003. I wouldn't mind him as a 4th OF/PH at all but I don't think he's going to accept that role. He'll find a starting job somewhere. I hope it's not with us.

Crankees are gonna go crazy this off-season... So? They can't just go plucking anybody they want from other teams. Loria and company get a vote in this too.

Penny's 2-0 record trumps Beckett's 1-1. That's true, but I still think that Beckett gets the MVP with a strong performance, simply because he's dominated throughout the entire playoff run, and Penny, umm, hasn't. Despite Penny being very sharp in the WS, I don't think Beckett's overall performance will be overlooked, or Penny's for that matter, Their entire postseason performance is supposed to be overlooked. It's a World Series MVP only. If the people that vote stick with that, then Penny's meltdown in Game 2 vs. the Cubs won't hurt him.

Lowell - gold glove defense? (5 pages ago) I can hardly wait to see how many errors he has next year without 6'5" Derek Lee bailing him out every other throw. He can't sling it across the diamond on a consistent basis - Lee is either squatting down to receive the throw half the time, or he is doing a full-on split. It's ridiculous. I will just be curious to see how Lowell's E's change (if he sticks around) which I HIGHLY doubt. Lowell - 2004 - Yankee Pinstripes. I agree with part of that - I think Lowell is a little overrated defensively. He's very good but I don't think he has great range. Like you said, Lee saves him a bunch of errors (Gonzalez too). Why are you so convinced that Lowell will be a Yankee in 2004?

It's between Penny and Beckett, pending on what Josh does tonight. I don't agree with that. If Beckett dominates tonight, I think it goes to Penny. Beckett pitched well in Game 3 but we lost that game. Penny's 2-0 record trumps Beckett's 1-1. If we lose tonight, and Pavano shuts down the Yankees tomorrow, I think Pavano gets the MVP. Gonzalez has an outside shot at it, if he has a couple of big games like flasportsfan88 says.

There were definitely fewer Yankee fans at JRS last night than there had been Cub fans during the NLCS. I'd say around 10%. In my section out in BFE, the Yankee fans tried to get chants going and they were immediately drowned out by the Marlins fans. The Yankee fans were a lot more fun than the Cubs fans. A lot of the Cubs fans were smug and in-your-face and had a weird sense of entitlement, especially considering they're fans of a team that hasn't won in 100 years. The Yankee fans just kinda bantered playfully but they didn't seem to be out to make anybody feel bad.

Here's a link from the Sun-Sentinel. It says Parking Lot Gates 2 and 5 will open at 3:30 PM. Does anybody know which Gates those are? Also, parking has been raised to $20. The Sun-Sentinel this morning said said that 2 parking gates open at 3:30 and the rest at 4:00 PM. The stadium gates open at 6:00 PM, which seems a little late considering security will probably be heavier.

It looks like they may be gone now. I think I just hit it at the right time. Sorry. Keep trying though. As they get tickets back, they'll make them available. I tried off and on all day until I started hitting about 15 minutes ago.

I don't know if we should be that disgusted with that poll. It was asked of the general readership on the front page of the Sun-Sentinel. A bunch of people don't follow sports at all and couldn't care less that the Marlins or Dolphins or Hurricanes do well. A recent poll in the Sun-Sentinel (on the Dolphins) had a choice of "I don't follow sports at all" - a little more than 26% indicated they don't follow sports. So in that context, 31% saying they won't go to any games isn't bad. A lot of those people probably aren't going to the playoff games either. Another Sun-Sentinel poll said over 50% of the respondents didn't even try for World Series tickets. This poll would be more interesting if it was somehow limited to the people who bought or attempted to buy playoff tickets. 20% indicated they have season tickets or will go regularly. If "regularly" means 6 games a year, and we have a base population of about 4,000,000, that means we'd draw 4.8 million (20% of 4,000,000 is 800,000. 800,000 times 6 games is 4.8 million). Obviously that's not going to happen but it does show that the numbers in this poll don't mean a whole lot. The one disgusting thing about that poll is the 6.1% that will only go if the Marlins win. But at least they're honest.
