Which doesn't correlate aswell as weighted OBP. They're virtually the same.. a miniscule difference. But I would recommend using extrapolated runs and I think extrapolated runs would show a difference closer to the 9% than to the 1%.

Hermida
Well using runs created (OBP x SLG) the three scenarios he gave created 0.149, 0.158 and 0.162 runs per PA. The difference between the 0.149 and 0.162 is 9.3%. In my opinion that's not about the same.

The guy's batting .262/.381/.390 for Pete's sake. That's not unbelievable, but it's quite solid. Would people be happier if he was hitting .262/.350/.452? Or .262/.330/.492? Because all of those lines make for just about the same hitter, as far as overall value is concerned. This is really one of the most annoying parts about this sight. Last year he sucked, sure, but his production is decent this year at the very least. This is so wrong. So I added 2 SLG points for every 1 OBP point, instead of 1.8:1. And this is a necessary response? Even with the "mistake" I made, Puma showed that it's pretty close, anyway. At least you added a link, but that was just a useless response. If you want a quick and easy way of calculating run production then use the very simple "runs created" formula which weights OBP and SLG equally. The formula is: OBP x SLG If you prefer precision and are willing to invests the effort then use the "extrapolated runs" formula which is the most precise run production estimator. If you use extrapolated runs formula you'll quickly conclude that your post was nonsense.

What major changes does this team need?
Need to replace Boni and Couglan with productive hitters.

Post Game after party! 5/21
Uggla is taking a lot of walks. His OBP is .329 which is not that bad.

we want 1-1 on wed
I stopped paying attention to anything Fredi says a long time ago.

When the Marlins score 4 or fewer runs....
At least Cody and Uggla are beginning to hit and although they're still underperforming their OPSes are no longer embarrassing but unfortunately Paulino has one hit the entire month.

When the Marlins score 4 or fewer runs....
Did you just agree with me in that our offense has stunk but at the same time you wrote that my comment is ridiculous? I'm confused.

When the Marlins score 4 or fewer runs....
We're 10th in run scoring and 15th in OBP + SLG. Our offense has stunk.

Bonifraudio Cost Fish The Game Tonight!
One bad defensive play (or game) does not make a player a bad defender One of the positives about Bonifacio is his defense at third base, it's the best we've seen there since Lowell. If I am not mistaken, Bonifacio really hasnt been all that great over at 3B. Maybe not bad, but nothing special either. I think Spike is right. This early in the season, Bonifacio hasn't been below a top 10 3B defensively... routinely top 5 Based on what? I looked at with RZR and OOZ this afternoon and he was about average.

Opening Day 2012
I don't know why Baker is excluded from all these lists. He's a great hitting catcher. Skipworth has struggled so much in the minors.

You guys realize that Hermida gets on base at an obscene rate dont you people? Do you realize his OBP + SLG blows for a corner OF?

He's specific about who he spoke to and what was discussed and that lends him credibility.

Mike Jacobs Vs. Emilio Bonifacio
I don't think any out of a few did or will argue Emilio > Jacobs. The arguement was Gaby > Jacobs. And based off all the FO comments in the offseason, they removed Jacobs for Gaby, not for emilio. But Gaby had a horrible ST and lost to Emilio. He lit up AAA but is now injured until June. We'll probably see him in July. edit: Also, depending on the Metric, Jacobs cost us somwhere between 14-23 runs. Assuming Gaby was league average (so worth exactly 0 runs), he'd only have to OPS somewhere in the .662-.722 range to equal Jacobs production last year, depending on just how many runs Jacobs cost (i'd personally say more around the 15 mark, so around a .722 OPS). Problem with that is it's not Gaby. When Boni was given 3B I took down by projected wins by 2 to 4 or something like that. It was stupid to not give Gaby a shot. He earned it with the year he had in the minors last year.

Mike Jacobs Vs. Emilio Bonifacio
I'm started this thread because we've had a lot of discussions about the value of Mike Jacobs. As far as I can ascertain, most people on this board seem to think that Mike Jacobs was entirely without value to our team last year. Most cite lack of OBP and bad defense. I'm not a guru when it comes to defensive metrics and I don't dispute that Jacobs was poor defensively. However, I do believe that his offensive game, while having indisputable weaknesses, was still much more useful than a player like Bonifacio. Specifically, Jacobs provided power and run producing ability. Bonifacio, on the other hand, provides a minutely better better average, but a non-existant slugging percentage and roughly the same .OBP. To demonstrate my point, let's look at the numbers: Mike Jacobs Year Team G AB R H HR RBI BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG 2008 FLA 141 477 67 118 32 93 36 119 1 0 .299 .514 .247 2009 KC 35 122 15 32 8 22 12 37 0 0 .338 .516 .262 Emilio Bonifacio 2008 ARI-WAS 49 169 29 41 0 14 14 46 7 4 .296 .337 .243 2009 FLA 36 157 24 41 1 9 10 35 7 3 .304 .325 .261 Total 96 349 55 87 1 25 28 84 14 8 .302 .327 .249 There really isn't anything about Bonifacio's offensive game that makes him more useful than Jacobs. I have a hard time believing that any player with a .500 slugging percentage couldn't be trade for more than a reliever, especially considering the ease with which we cut effective ones last year. I wasn't ever a huge fan of Jacobs, as like everyone else I prefer complete offensive players. He wasn't, but neither is Bonifacio. I think the Fo's attempts at "improving" our team this offseason were strongly misguided. Many seemed to believe that, in the case of Jacobs, addition by subtraction would help us out. Now left with the results of subtraction, I have a hard time believing this is true, especially considering that Bonifacio's 3B defense hasn't really been extremely impressive either. Good post. The sum of Baker, Cantu, Uggla, Hanley, Hermida and Ross are doing relatively close to what they did last year. This year they're about .020 OPS points below last year. The huge drop-off is with Boni and Maybin replacing two productive hitters that could be counted on to put up OPSes in the .825 range.

World Series Games To Start At 8 Et
This may come as shock to many on the east coast but networks schedule the games at the time they can get the most viewers or in other words they try to schedule games at the most fan friendly times taking into account the entire country. The more people view the more they can charge for ads.

Is It Time To Start Thinking Of Firing Fredi Gonzalez
This writer makes it sound like it was more than hearsay but we'll never know: "The Dodgers tried to pry Cabrera away from the Marlins last summer when they discussed a deal that would have sent Matt Kemp, James Loney and Chad Billingsley to Florida, but the Marlins balked." http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071107&content_id=2295572&vkey=hotstove2007&fext=.jsp

Is It Time To Start Thinking Of Firing Fredi Gonzalez
You don't know what the Marlins could have gotten for Cabrera. The only other offer I know of was from the Angels and it wasn't that impressive. In hindsight, we got two guys who could at least become something very good. THe Dodgers offered Billingsley, Kempt and Loney but the Marlins said no.

The Most Preposterous Things Said From Baseball People
Steve Phillips would trade Beltran because he lacks "grit" or something like that... I guess he thinks Grit > Production.

This Team Sucks
Mike Jacobs is the epitome of why this team had inconsistent offense last year (and continues to have it this year). DUMB, DUMB, DUMB ball player. I don't know what you mean by "inconsistent" but I would rather have a so-called "inconsistent" offense like last year's that was the strength of the team and one best in the league as opposed to a consistently bad offense like this year's that's the 2nd or 3rd worst in the league.

What baseball Card or Cards do you regret selling
When I was in college and broke I took all my baseball cards (maybe 10000) and took them to one of those baseball card stores that used to be around (not sure if the still are) to sell them but I removed most of the star players so the guy is looking through them and noticed it and didn't buy.
