  1. I didn't watch the game but I have a hard time believing someone who allowed 5 ER, 7 hits and 2 BBs in 6 innings had a great game. It looks like the offense once again bailed out poor pitching. olsen pitched really good. 10 k's and wasnt really in trouble till the 7th.... and i believe it was like the 3rd inning he threw alot of pitches. Ks count for only one out so whether he had 10 Ks or 3 or 5 Ks it doesn't really matter to me. Allowing 5 ER in 6 innings is really bad unless he was victimized by a bunch of bloops or shoddy defense. Was he victimized by a bunch of bloops or shoddy defense?

  3. No doubt about Casablanca. For the first hour of that movie almost every single line is quotable. Theo Epstein's grandfather co-wrote the script.
  4. That's what Alfredo Amezaga is doing in the leadoff spot. That's absolutely fine. And although some may vehemently disagree (and I could care less) he has become more than adequate in CF as well. His improvement from year to year has been awesome. Offense isn't our problem even though some say it is. It's our starting pitching (yes I realize tonight it wasnt). We are 2nd in runs scored, last in runs allowed. Pretty simple math right there. Now this isn't to say I would be against trading for a Dukes, Adam Jones, Carlos Gomez, Lastings Milledge, whatever.... Just sayin he ain't as bad as some of you make him out to be. I agree starting pitching is our biggest problem and I agree Alfredo has improved a bit leading off compared to hitting 7th or 8th but the lineup should not be constructed in a way to only maximize what your worst hitter does and that's what Fredi has done by having our worst hitters (Alfredo, Reggie and Carroll) getting the most PAs. Since the switch was done our run scoring has nosedived from 5.0 runs per game to 4.6 runs per game.
  5. Hermida should be leading off and Carroll should be hitting 8th.
  6. Wow. Way to come strong and counter with some strong numbers and facts. Wow. You're looking for managerial numbers? How ridiculous can you get!!!! Let's see.. are you looking for something like.. well, Fredi made the right pitching change 46% of the time as opposed to Joe's 39%? ummmmm......How about simply wins or losses??? Sorta like I posted ONE POST ABOVE in my question posed: If you think a manager is a good one or a bad one based on his team's record I guess that's one way of doing it. I think that's stupid way to do it but you're entitle to do it any way you choose.

  8. i dont know about you guys but i would love to see Fredi take on more of a Girardi attitude and be a lot more stern.... much more infield and outfield practice and making sure the basics are down becuase that is what always seems to hurt us. im not saying implement a no facial hair policy but he needs to stop seeming so nice and that everything will just work out. Ok then,I'll waste my time and play along... why exactly are the Marlins better this year? Everything else is exactly the same between this team and last years except for the managers and this team has suffered a lot more injuries. This time last year the Marlins were 31-40. Maybe we should get Mick from the Rocky movies to whip this team into shape! I predict Fredi will get fired by the end of the '09 season and noone will ever hire him to manage another team. Girardi will manage for many years.
  9. MLB gave us a gift with our interleague schedule but we pissed it away with mediocre play although we did make up some ground on some teams we're chasing.
  10. Such a poll without Billy Wilder?? Other names I would consider: John Huston Howard Hawks Orson Welles Sam Peckinpah Robert Altman (some claim he is the best American director in history) David Lynch I would add William Wyler to the list. How is his resume better than Orson Welles' or Robert Altman's? He's made one great film and one conventional and overrated epic. I think Ben Hur, Roman Holiday, The Letter, The Best Years of Our Lives, The Heiress, Mrs. Miniver and Wuthering Heights are all great films. I can watch all of them (except maybe Mrs. Miniver) repeatedly. From Welles I've watched Citizen Cane, Touch of Evil, The Lady From Shanghai and The Stranger. I loved Touch of Evil.. hated The Lady (and I love Rita), liked The Sranger but didn't think it's anything special and I have to admit I'm not into all the technical aspects so I'm not a Citizen Cane fan. I don't think Altman is anything special. I guess 3 Women and MASH are pretty good but I don't care for most of his work.
  11. If somehow we do end up trading Dontrelle we better get a butt load back. Why would anyone give us a "butt load" for a player we won't be able to sign and someone whose value is falling with every crappy outing that he has? We missed the boat on dealing him for his proper value. Now, your not going to get anywhere near what you deserve for him. Puhlease. I wouldn't word it the way FFIPA did but his value has certainly declined over the past 18 months. He's closer to free agancy, has become more expensive $$$ wise and his production has declined.

  13. Especially, The Third Man. If someone made the claim that it is the greatest film ever made I would have a lot of trouble disagreeing. Easily a top 5 film. Everything about that movie is perfect: textbook cinematography that is still emulated today, dialogue that is sharp as glass, impeccable editing. It is the jewel of the film noir movement (interestingly enough it came toward the end).Of all of the movies I have seen in my lifetime, it is the one film most difficult to criticize and it didn't even make the damn list. I don't pay attention to these lists other than to curse at them for how ridiculous they are but with that said I don't think The Third Man should be considered an American film. Carol Reed was British and it was obvioulsy filmed on location in Vienna and probably a London studio. Maybe that's the reason they left it out. If they left it out for any other reason then this shows what a useless piece of junk that list is.
  14. the first name that came to my mind was Paul Newman. Talk about range. He's done every type of genre there is and still come out on top. Quintesenntial actor of our time: Paul Newman. I like Paul Newman a lot and am we're in a sort of Paul Newman mode right now having rewatched a few of his late 50s movies over the past few weeks but I wouldn't call Newman an actor of our times. The guy has made maybe one good movie the past 30 some years. He was an actor of the 50s and 60s. My favorite current actor is Ed Norton. My favorite actor of all-time is Burt Lancaster.
  15. Such a poll without Billy Wilder??
  16. Carroll hasn't done much and I don't buy the Eric Byrnes kool aid but I would like to see him play every day at least for a couple of weeks to see what he can do.
  17. Yes, and some fans (read: the more intelligent and studious ones) know about advanced baseball statistics. I haven't read most of the posts on here but I'll just say that over the years I've noticed that the so-called more intelligent and studious fans have a knack for being clueless about how some of the stats they use are calculated and in my opinion if you don't know how a stat is calculated then you don't know what the stat measures and if you don't know what the stat measures you shouldn't use it.
  18. Welcome to Fantasy Island. The Marlins aren't trading for any more players that make more than 500K, so no.....Adam Dunn has less than a 0% chance of coming to the Florida Marlins. Did Beinfest tell you this directly? The marlins have been interested in Dunn for years, and theres absolutely no reason why if the marlins are still in the race near mid july, they wouldnt pull off a trade to bring him in. This is in the realm of possibility and in no way fantastical like an A-Rod trade would be. If we're going to Fantasy Island and make believe that Loria will open his wallet to spend a little of the revenue sharing welfare then I would rather go for someone that would provide a major boost like a Carlos Zambrano. Our starting pitchign is pretty crappy and Zambrano would plug a big hole in there. Right fantasy island, just like when we traded for the AL leader in saves in 2003 before the ASB, when we signed a future hall of fame catcher, when we traded for a replacement after lowell broke his hand, and we signed delgado. No reason to think we don't make a move if we're in the hunt in mid-july. Not saying it'll be Dunn, but thinking there's absolutely no chance we improve if we're in contention puts you right smack in the middle of 'Fantasy Island' Until the '05 season Loria was spending teh revenue sharing money but that's no longer the case. Last July we did nothing to improve the team. There's zero chance of adding a big salary guy like Dunn unless we're on Fantasy Island. Sorry Swift and polo but just b/c it didn't happen last year doesn't mean it won't happen this year. We did it in 03 and 04. Theres absolutely no reason why we wouldn't do it this year if we're in contention and if you're basing your raitonale on just one year (which is last year) then apparently you and swift need to go wait for the arrival of airplanes with Ricardo Montalban. I'm not saying it'll happen, but being that sure it won't happen just b/c it didn't last year is ridiculous. But see the team changed its spending patterns after the '05 season. Unless they revert back to the old ways I don't see us picking up a big money player.
  19. Criticizing his poor play doesn't mean one is calling him a bust.
  20. time to send this garbage to the incinerator I still don't understand why it is you think he cannot be criticized.
  21. I don't think he's been hurt all season because he has maintained his velocity all season. I just think he's pitching awful. You're correct. That's just one guy trying to make excuses.
  22. I don't particularly care formula. If two guys have similar OBP and similar SLG but one guy has 50 additional ABs then the guy with the additional ABs will have a higher RC number and that makes RC in a way akin to counting stats and I don't care much for counting stats. OBP ? SLG ? AB or, OBP ? TB
  23. As of right now Uggla and Hanley don't belong. :lol Hanley certainly belongs. Uggla because of his position, although you could argue Hudson or perhaps Johnson are more deserving. Hanley leads the league in runs scored, is 8th in BA (second to only Renteria among NL SS in BA and OPS) and is (statistically) the most efficient base stealer in baseball (minimum 20 attempts) Hanley's OPS is 2nd just a tad above Reyes but with RISP Hanley's numbers are pathetic and defensively he's below average. Renteria, Reyes, Rollins and Hardy belong ahead of Hanley. Uggla's OPS is 4th and with RISP his numbers are pathetic and defensively he's also below average. Utley, Hudson and Johnson belong ahead of Uggla. I think OPS and OPS with RISP are more important than BA but I guess not everyone agrees. Oh well. If you think OPS is so important, great, I agree with you. Hanley's 19th in the NL in OPS and #2 among NL short-stops. So, I guess if that doesn't belong on a roster of 26 players, you're contradicting yourself. As for RISP, that's a laughably flukey stat. In terms of RC/27, Hanley's 3rd among NL SS and in terms of simple RC, he's second. I'm not contradicting myself because both OPS and OPS with RISP are important and with RISP his numbers are pathetic. I don't understand why anyone wouldn't care how players perform with RISP as apparently you don't but whatever. Can you explain the formula for this RC thing you're hanging your hat on?

You have to remember Hanley was in the leadoff spot most of the year and then when he was switched to the 3 spot, he hit a slump, so the RISP numbers shouldn't be taken into consideration that much. I think his RISP numbers were really bad when he was leading off and they've remained bad hitting 3rd. Here are the RISP OPS numbers of selected NL middle infielders RISP OPS: Reyes - .967 Rollins - .960 Renteria - .959 Hardy - .903 Johnson - .857 Hudson - .836 Utley - .735 Uggla - .645 Hanley - .621
