Olsen Gets A Free Ride on A.J. Like Comments
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basebal...-sports-marlins . . I'm surprised that the day has gone by and nobody has brought this up. Olsen making comments about the fans(or lack of) down here. Similar to what we've heard in the past from others, like A.J., who got lambasted here for voicing his opinion. Personally, I have no problem with what Olsen and others have said. It's a fact. But there are some here who like to blast players for making fan comments. I'm surprised Olsen got a free ride on this one. Most fans believe the hype and expect him to be a star so they give him a free ride on everything. like with AJ, I could care less what they say just pitch well and I won't complain AJ was a good pitcher for the Marlins. The same thing cannot be said about Olsen. Olsen is still young and has more than enough time to improve, A.J. has reached his peak and he ain't all that good. Well AJ goes deeper into games and allows fewer runs. The chances that Olsen will have a better career than AJ (based on innings per start and ERA+) are slim and none. Too early to say that Olsen has not been a good pitcher for the Marlins so far. He's had limited service time, and so far I think he's done a decent job. He has been around for the equivalent of a year and a half and so far his ERA is a bit worse than league average and his innings per start are ridiculously low. Below average pitcher so far in his career.

Reggie is your player of the GAME THOUGHTS
Tank had a rough afternoon. Appears to still be working out the kinks I hope that's all it is but I wouldn't bet on it.

Fish @ Cubs 2:20 from the friendly confines
I don't get the double-switch. How are we benefitting by placing Amezaga in center, moving Reggie to left and removing Willingham? I believe managers are conditioned to automatically make double-switches even when they are not needed.

Meh Game Thoughts
I hope everyone who has been talking up Olsen's fiery attitude liked today's game, because this is what comes with it. He had a lead, some things went wrong (fielding, dink and dunk hits), and everything went down hill. Kranitz had to come calm him down on the mound then again once in the dugout. The maturity for Olsen is just not there- he has to be able to overcome adversity, and he gets so down that everything started to pile on. His body language was terrible the last few innings, and how do you think his teammates take that? I don't mind a fiery pitcher (though I'd rather have an even-keel Tom Glavine or Greg Maddux any day...semed to work for them), but one who can overcome adversity and not get down on himself so visibly when things go wrong. I don't see the Olsen maturation that so many talk about. Mature pitchers don't throw temper tantrums when hitters step out. Yesterday he turned his back on Miguel when Miguel was walking towards him trying to tell him something. Later on when Kranitz came to to talk to him he didn't have the common courtesy to face Kranitz. He was looking everywhere except at Kranitz. It gave the impression he didn't care about anything Kranitz had to say.

Scott and Dontrelle
Why do you say Olsen has a plus FB? Because he has one. So mediocre command of a low 90s FB is considered a plus FB?
-
Scott and Dontrelle
I think both need to work on further developing their change ups. If they can make the change a plus to go along with plus FBs and sliders...they will reach another level. Why do you say Olsen has a plus FB?

Wes Helms' comments on Scott Olsen
Lets not forget though that if we werent all Marlins fans, we would despise Olsen. If Utley and Olsen got into a fight I think about 99% of fans of the 28 other teams would root for Utley. Olsen is way up there in the a-hole meter.

Saltalamacchia for Dontrelle?
We have plenty of pitching. We dont have much catching. We dont have the collective testicles to do something like this. Factor in that we are beyond cheap and its going to happen at some point. Without DTrain the rotation would be Mitre, Olsen, Obermueller, Kim and ? I wouldn't be impressed. I'm not as sold on Salty as everyone else seems to be. Catching prospects usually get overrated and his defense is not the greatest. He was not that good last year in the minors with a .230 BA. I would want more back from the braves for Dontrelle. He had hand problems last year.

Saltalamacchia for Dontrelle?
Right now starting pitching is the big hole. We need DTrain more than we need Salty.

Which MLB player has the hottest wife??
Very pretty face but she needs to eat.. she looks like she's 100 lbs... add 10 lbs - 15 lbs and she would look 100 times better.

Marlins Talk on WQAM
More Marlins talk on QAM: =================== Caller: Mitre is doing great. How many innings does one need to qualify for the ERA lead? Fat O: I don't know.

Four words
When constructing a team you can choose offensive-minded players, defensive-minded players or ones that do a bit of both. Jacobs, Uggla, Hanley, Miguel, Hammer and Hermida are all without a doubt offensive-minded players first so it should come as no surprise that we're a poor defensive team. Regarding Hanley, I think he's the CF of the future. It's just a matter of when the switch will take place. I think it'll be next season.

Luis Castillo breaks record,
Castillo doesn't belong anywhere near the hall of fame. None of his offensive stats stand out. 1492 hits - not enough 155 doubles - not enough 49 triples - good stat but doesn't make you HOF worthy 23 home runs - not enough to make up for the low number of hits 599 walks - You don't make the HOF for walking 695 strike outs - He strikes out more than he walks 308 stolen bases - nice stat 125 caught stealing - 2.4 steals for every caught stealing, not a good stat .294 average - below career .300 hitter .369 OBP - not bad but not great enough to overcome his lack of other stats .358 slugging percentage - not HOF worthy He has been a serviceable second baseman with a great glove, and that is it. and just for some more icing Black Ink: Batting - 4 (406) (Average HOFer ≈ 27) Gray Ink: Batting - 35 (670) (Average HOFer ≈ 144) HOF Standards: Batting - 25.9 (386) (Average HOFer ≈ 50) HOF Monitor: Batting - 40.5 (435) (Likely HOFer > 100) You got your hands full Swifty I don't think he's hall of fame material but you need to compare him to other middle infielders.

Mitre pitching tonight
Since I guess it's no longer en vogue to trash Mitre around here, I'll leave you with one thought. Mitre's not a work-horse. He doesn't have a complete game this season, has gone past 7 innings only twice. In one more star than Anibal Sanchez, Mitre has allowed one more run, yet his ERA is half of Sanchez. There are plenty of runs being scored off him. When you think about it, who on this staff is a work horse? Maybe Johnson. He's about it. And for the record, I'm not sold on Mitre at all. Three good games mean nothing to me considering his history. DTrain is a workhorse. That's not even debatable. A guy like Johnson who hasn't pitched a full season and is on the DL his 2nd season is not a workhorse.

Yankeefan was talking about his defense and that's what I was responding to.

Hanley was offered to the Phils
Yeah could you imagine a lineup that included Howard, Utley, Rollins, and Hanley.... You're talking a collective .315 average with the potential for 150 homers in that stretch of players. Is that better than Hanley, Miguel, Hammer and Uggla? That's debatable. I'll probably take our four.

Most Overrated Players
I agree Zone Rating has flaws but at least it's better than Range Factor and every analysis I've read that takes a player's range into account concludes that Jeter is a terrible defensive player. The other day I read an analysis of the '06 season and it concluded Jeter made abpuit 30 fewer plays than the average SS. Those 30 plays Jeter failed to make last season = a boatload of extra runs allowed.

Most Overrated Players
As always, the numbers don't tell the whole story. With that said, why dont we take a look at how Jeter's D stacks up over his career versus some other SS's that can hit that get WAY more press re their D [tried to keep this mostly AL but I wanted to throw two guys in there for obvious reasons]? RF Jeter .975 4.09 Young .976 4.28 Furcal .972 4.62 Tejada .971 4.60 Guillen .967 4.03 Hanley .961 4.17 _linenums:0'>Player FP RFJeter .975 4.09Young .976 4.28Furcal .972 4.62Tejada .971 4.60Guillen .967 4.03Hanley .961 4.17 Range Factor is a useless stat. It's useless because the single most important variable in a player's Range Factor is the amount of chances per inning he gets. Why don't you use Zone Rating instead? Zone Rating is a defensive stat that has some value as it measures the percentage of plays a player makes in his defensive zone. I'll go out on a limb and say the reason you ignore Zone Rating is because year in and year out Jeter is consistently towards the bottom of SS in Zone Rating.

De Aza's hairline fracture
I'm sure it was diagnosed immediately... this is what Front Offices do in baseball. They'll string along the bad news for a couple weeks, hoping we forget. Remember Josh Johnson 2 month ago. This happens quite frequently. If it was diagnosed immediately why did he pinch hit a few days after he was shut down? Did Fredi use him when he had a fractured ankle or did the doctors screw-up? I'm not a Fredi fan but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Amezaga in CF...just freakin shoot me already!
Reggie > Alfredo In every facet of the game. Baserunning? Reggie is faster, and has shown a better ability to steal bases, albeit in AAA, than Amezaga has shown us. Amezaga should be faster than he is, but he just really isn't. Being fast doesn't necessarily make you a good baserunner. Reggie on the basepaths is a stupid mistake waiting to happen and it happened last night. He lost us the game by not taking 3rd on the throw home. Any other baserunner takes 3rd on that play and scores on the wild pitch.

Game 2 thoughts
Just a couple of things. First, even down by 4 going into the bottom of the 9th I still felt we had a shot because of the way we've come back from behind all season. Second, Reggie should NEVER pinch run again. Hammer makes it to 3rd on the throw home and Hammer scores from 3rd on the wild pitch.
