May 27, 200719 yr Discuss. Bad series. No clutch hitting. No pitching (Except Mitre). Bad fielding. Good: Looks like Miggy is starting to come alive. All of his hits/outs today were stung. Alfredo also had a good series. Nice to see him with pretty much all the hits this weekend. Hopefully the Fish will turn things around at Wrigley. This team needs to shake things up... High socks anyone? Didn't it work last year or the year before? We have to start playing as a team.
May 27, 200719 yr we had a great chance to win 2 of 3 and just get within 5.5 games and we end up 9.5 out
May 27, 200719 yr I hope everyone who has been talking up Olsen's fiery attitude liked today's game, because this is what comes with it. He had a lead, some things went wrong (fielding, dink and dunk hits), and everything went down hill. Kranitz had to come calm him down on the mound then again once in the dugout. The maturity for Olsen is just not there- he has to be able to overcome adversity, and he gets so down that everything started to pile on. His body language was terrible the last few innings, and how do you think his teammates take that? I don't mind a fiery pitcher (though I'd rather have an even-keel Tom Glavine or Greg Maddux any day...semed to work for them), but one who can overcome adversity and not get down on himself so visibly when things go wrong.
May 27, 200719 yr I hate the Mets, if I ever see Mr. Met walking around I will beat him him to death. When I look at Mr. Met, all I see is pure evil:
May 27, 200719 yr Hammer had an amazing play...I was in 107 and it was a fun atmosphere out there...but overall and I think this goes for Saturday too, this team just didn't show up...it's like all of the Marlins' players have evil Met fan twins who showed up the past 2 nights...
May 27, 200719 yr Well Hermida's 1-13 against the Phillies and now 0-for the weekend certainly isn't helping nor was his defense today. He's sinking so fast Joe Borchard is starting to look good (only kidding :encore don't go ballistic). Sure Joe strikes out alot but so has Hermida, eleven times in the last two series. It's hard to tell which is the real Jeremy Hermida. Let's hope it's a bump in the road but if he hasn't snapped out of it by the end of the roadtrip it might be time to rethink his relative value as an everyday player until he gets his head on straight. Ramirez' 0-fer weekend didn't help the cause and Willingham hasn't had a hit since the first Philly game. Cold bats. Hot opponent. Someone said we had a chance to win two out of three but you can't play bad defense AND not hit and expect to win anything. As for Olsen, my guess is he's a season away from maturing enough to be great. His stuff is there, his head isn't. At least everybody's favorite whipping boys, Amezaga (five hits over the weekend) and Olivo (six hits, two homeruns) seem the guys with the hot bats although Cabrera has hit safely in seven of the last eight games and Uggla has shown some promise lately. Maybe it all comes together in Chicago. Let's hope so.
May 27, 200719 yr ya i'm glad to see Hermida is playing just like last year. I guess we should blame this on some injury now also.

But what was really encouraging were his at-bats today. His swing looked grooved.

May 27, 200719 yr This is the worst defensive outfield I have seen since the days of Junior Felix. Hermida and Amezaga especially have zero range. That Wright ball hung for an eternity and all Hermida could muster was a half-assed dive and Amezaga, don't even get me started...what I wouldn't give for a centerfielder who could just play defense. Bats suck, situational hitting sucks, defense sucks...quite frankly, we just suck. It's tough to watch a team and know that they're going to do everything they can to provide its opponent with 3 or 4 runs. Also, FWIW, the official scoring at the stadium had the throw as an E-4 on Uggla, but with a single and RBI, to me, the error (which allowed Delgado to score) has to be on Boone.

It's not easy to be optimistic about things. There's not much positives to take away from the Mets series. Maybe Olivo's bat. Also, Amazega...and even Reggie. . But you Swifty have set the negative bar at a level that I don't think Bob Beamon could jump. Congrats.
May 27, 200719 yr dan uggla's defense leaves alot to be desired what is most frustrating is he has no idea to where to position himself and he has hands of stone.
May 27, 200719 yr dan uggla's defense leaves alot to be desired what is most frustrating is he has no idea to where to position himself and he has hands of stone... ..and he tries to make a play when there isn't one. He did that in the beginning of last year, and then he got better, but now he's doing it again.
May 27, 200719 yr Author MIAMI -- A four-run fourth inning and an offense which contributed just seven hits were the main unwanted ingredients in the Marlins' 6-4 loss to the Mets in front of 23,622 at Dolphin Stadium on Sunday afternoon. It's the fourth time this season that the Marlins (23-27) have been swept, and the first time they've been swept in a three-game series by the Mets since June 26-28, 2000. The Marlins have lost their last seven games against the Mets at Dolphin Stadium, and now begin a 10-game road trip that starts on Monday afternoon in Chicago. "We've got to learn from this series and move on," said Jeremy Hermida, who was 0-for-2 before being pinch-hit for in the sixth inning by Hanley Ramirez. "It's part of the game to move on and play the next one. You can't dwell on the past and what happened before." The National League-leading Mets (32-17) pounded out 10 hits -- six against Marlins starter Scott Olsen -- and made no errors to strengthen their hold in the NL East. "We've got to get some consistent pitching," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We've got to get momentum." Olsen (4-4), who had thrown 40 pitches through the first three innings, needed 45 to get out of the fourth. Carlos Beltran drew a one-out walk, and David Wright had a bloop base hit just out of the reach of a diving Hermida in right field to put runners on first and second. Carlos Delgado, who hit two home runs on Saturday, followed with a sharp RBI single to right to score Beltran and tie the game at 1 and put runners back on first and second. The Mets then executed a double steal, with Wright swiping his 10th and Delgado his second of the year. Marlins catcher Miguel Olivo's throw to third was quick, but Wright got a good jump to beat it. Damion Easley hit a dribbler to second, scoring Wright, but Dan Uggla's throwing error allowed Delgado to score to give the Mets a 3-1 lead. Easley went to second on a wild pitch, and after Ramon Castro struck out, Easley scored on Endy Chavez's RBI single to left. Pitching coach Rick Kranitz walked to the mound to try and calm down Olsen. "I don't think I've ever thrown as many pitches as I did in that one inning, but I kept us as close as I could," Olsen said. Olsen responded by striking out Mets starting pitcher Jorge Sosa to get out of the inning. The lefty would leave after five innings, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out seven. Sosa responded by throwing 11 pitches in a 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth. In the fifth, Josh Willingham made a nice diving catch on a shallow pop fly down the left-field line. But with two outs, Beltran drew another walk and scored on Wright's double to right-center to give New York a 5-1 cushion. Aaron Boone led off the fifth with a double and scored on Olivo's single to make it 5-2, and Justin Miller retired the Mets in order in the sixth. Amezaga legged out a double, and Uggla walked to give the Marlins two baserunners with no outs in the bottom of the frame. After Miguel Cabrera lined out, Willingham hit a long fly ball that was caught by Easley on the warning track in left field. "We're swinging the bats well," Gonzalez said. "The [Mets] made the plays." Left-handed reliever Pedro Feliciano took over on the mound for Sosa, and the Marlins also made a change, sending in Ramirez to pinch-hit. The Marlins shortstop worked the count full before grounding out sharply to Jose Reyes. Ramirez, who was not in the starting lineup because Gonzalez was giving him a day off, stayed in the game at shortstop, and Amezaga moved to center and Reggie Ambercrombie to right. Julio Franco pinch-hit in the eighth and notched his eighth RBI of the season. With two outs in the inning, the Mets loaded the bases for the second time in the game, but Taylor Tankersley got Beltran to strike out swinging to get out of the jam. The Marlins struck first in the game in the third frame. Abercrombie opened the inning with a single to right and a steal of second base. Olsen laid down a sacrifice bunt -- with two strikes -- to advance Abercrombie to third. Amezaga then hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left field for his 12th RBI to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead. Amezaga had the best series of any of the Marlins. Out of the leadoff spot, he was 5-for-11 with three RBIs and one stolen base. But unfortunately, not too many Marlins shared his success against the Mets. "To beat a team like that you have to play your best baseball, and we didn't play our best baseball," Uggla said. Flamarlins.com
May 28, 200719 yr Yeah, he started out great then had that rough 4th and yep... ur avatar is awesome. clutch hitting wasnt there and alot of our guys werent getting hits which doesnt translate into alot of runs. we scored 9 runs this series? which averages to 3 a game, that doesnt translate into wins most of the time. get our heads straight again and go back out and attack the Cubs tomorrow.
May 28, 200719 yr I think it was a matter of us just running into a better team than us. Better offensively, better defensively, and better on the mound. There's no shame saying a team is better than us- I think that's why the Mets swept us, errors or no errors.
May 28, 200719 yr I think it was a matter of us just running into a better team than us. Better offensively, better defensively, and better on the mound. There's no shame saying a team is better than us- I think that's why the Mets swept us, errors or no errors. We play error free baseball, we win either the 1st or 3rd game, but maybe I'm alone in thinking that. Are the Mets a better team? Yeah, but $100 million better get a better team. The talent discrepancy isn't so great, though, and FWIW, if you take LoDuca or Beltran (just one) and put them on this team, I think we're darn close to even or possibly even better than them, but, again, maybe I'm alone in thinking that. Personally, I think this sweep is pretty bad because I think we only convincingly faced an unfavorable pitching matchup once (Saturday) this weekend.
May 28, 200719 yr we had a great chance to win 2 of 3 and just get within 5.5 games and we end up 9.5 out No we didnt. We would have been fortunate to win 1 out of 3. The Mets are a far better team than the Marlins.
