Lindstrom could return next homestand
Shouldn't even be on the team, much less the closer of the team. Eric, the great thing about being 18 yrs old is you know everything, when you grow up and become a man you might want to think before you write stupid, assine, emotional laden statements. Lindstrom has had a great career with the Marlins with ERA of 3.09 and 3.11 the last two years. His saves versus chances is 19 to 22. He has in his career the same number of blown saves as Nunez has for the Marlins this year, three. Eric, when you pick a career after High School make sure it isn't in scouting baseball players as you aren't so good at it. Now I remember why I quit reading the postings on Marlinsbaseball, most are simply for argument not for thoughtful discussion. Uber, look at the stats this year. Uber, every reliever on our current roster is pitching well. Uber, what reliever would you send down? Uber, you are a Lindstrom supporter. I bet if I were saying this crap about (lets say...Uggla), you'd totally be agreeing. And Uggla has been an All-Star before. Lindstrom? Not so much. Uggla, All-star or not he sure had a great showing and proved that he is just as bad as his stats indicate this year. As hard as fans are on baseball players don't look for Dan Uggla to ever be in another All-Star game for the rest of his career. He can't field or hit and he was a supposed All-Star? He is the Marlins worst hitter and second worst fielder. I'll bet you $100 (so save this post) that Matt Lindstrom will be an All-Star next year. With this team or not mark my words. I'd just like to say what you said about Uggla was completely false. As for the bet...sure, I guess. You better hope Lindstrom remains closer if he has any chance of being an All-Star b/c it's even more difficult for a middle reliever to get into the game. Lindstrom's got a long ways to go, but it can happen. Relievers tend to have up and down years, that's why I hate when teams decide to give relievers big contracts. Ryan Franklin this year being a good example. Sucked last year, All-Star this year. But whatever...for shits and giggles, it's on. Please explain. I agree with you here.

Lindstrom could return next homestand
Lindstrom should have some outings in the minors before he gets called up. And Erick, we can easily send down Brandon Donelly to call up Lindstrom. Or Sanches and if not, why not?

Lindstrom could return next homestand
I've been one of Lindstrom's biggest supporters and I think there is NO WAY he should be closing with the job Leo has done. Rab you have been one of the biggest Lindstrom supporters and I agree with you here. It wouldn't even be fair if they took him out if he had 2 bad outings. I just want the team to get to the point where one of them can be used in the 9th because that means we are winning and have a good chance to win the game.

To add on how good he was in the 2nd half last year... Lindstrom in July, August and Spetember Combined only allowed 6 Runs in 36 appearances (30.2 IP). That's amazing. Still, you can't take Leo out of the closers spot. He's been lights out there. I know, and as I posted earlier I agree with that. I was just looking through his game logs last season and saw that his 2nd half was amazing. ya i agree leo has been solid. but that shows that he has the ability to be dominate. So lets just say this, lindy goes to the minors has some really nice outings. do we leave him down there? if we bring him up who do we send down and where do we use lindy? We trade him for a big bat.

oh yeaaa your right hes has a great career, I think your age has gotten to you and maybe you should retire as a baseball fan. Last year he was sent down mid season b/c he was having such a great year. Also, this year he has been fantastic. To say that he has had a great career as a marlins should result in a complete ban from marlinsbaseball.com. So why dont you let the knowledgeable youth do the talking and go take a nap or drink some prune jucie. O.K if you ban me from saying that Matty has had a good career. Then you should be banned for not being able to spell juice. You would have won no money on "who's smarter than a 5th grader."

7/24 Post Game
My vote the Dodgers bullpen gift wrapping it for the Fish. JJ was a beast and so was Cogs. Gotta tip my cap to Jeremy Hermida as well. Good win.

Uggla play #4 on SC top 10.
Gold glove here we come! He would get the diamond glove if he could make routine plays

Do you think the Marlins ever considered the switch
...moving Bonifacio to 2B, and Uggla to 3B? If so, does anyone think we'd be better defensively, with this alignment? Do you mean from not leading the majors in errors to being the second worst team in baseball in that category? Besides neither one of them can hit very well so it doesn't matter if you swith them in the infield. You just made Uggla a lot worse than he is. That is the reality of it though. Ugla is an all or nothing player. If he isn't hitting homeruns, he is poping out or grounding into double plays. If a ball isn't hit right at him (other than the #4 play on Sportscenter the other night) you can't count on him getting to it and making a play. If he isn't killing us with his stick, it is on the defensive side. Oh well the team is winning right now. If there is no room in the bullpen for Matty then I say lets trade him and some others for a big bat. We all know that is what the team needs.

Do you think the Marlins ever considered the switch
What cracks me up about this team is that they make players play positions that they did not play in the minor leagues. Dont think its a good idea, the idea sucks! Uggla should not move to 3rd, and if anything they should add another American to the infield. Nothing against Cantu, Bonafacio or especially Ramirez or any other heritage. Sanchez could possibly fit in as part of the future infield. Also, they should promote relief pitchers to starters from the major league level rather than promote some no name from AA or AAA to make the never-ending emergency starts. Matt Lindstrum is not a closer, and should not return as the closer. He would be an ideal setup man though. To bad they did not resign Lee Gardner. At least Gardner had 30 minor league saves the year before he was promoted to the Marlins. 1. Why do we need an American, again? I forgot getting players from different heritages was the difference maker in making teams better. That made no sense. 2. With his #'s this year, Matt Lindstrom is not the closer. Matt Lindstrom is not the setup man. At this point, Lindstrom would be fortunate to make the team, even if he comes back strong. Truthfully, none of our relievers deserve a demotion, as of right now. 3. Lee Gardner's are replaceable. I'd say the Marlins have already proven this, so I won't go into further detail. Admin Beinfest? Jeffery Loria? Fredi? Is that you? You should trade Lindstrom. By the way, I think you all suck and if it isn't , hey Erick these words are for you.

We need another bat
We need a closer. Isn't that what the front office has been trying to get (all this bullpen help) and for what? We can't even get to the later innings with leads. When we do it's because we luck out with guys walking in the final runs. This team has had plenty of opportunities to blow games wide open, but they haven't. Upper Management is a joke. Go get a big bat for crying out loud!!!

Clueless
mystiko187 Didn't mean to come off sounding pompous or arrogant. I am new to the internet lingo too (FWIW)-yeah I had no idea what that meant so thanks for clearing that up. I was just trying to state my opinion as I would have played it. Before batting practice I believe everyone of the positon players takes BP and before they start swinging away they have to lay down some bunts. I am not saying that laying a bunt down in BP in the same as in game situations, however, I believe in this situation it would have been the more logical move. If you are in the majors, don't you think, if asked upon to lay down a bunt, you coud probably do that? There are so many more opportunities to score if a player is on third with one out than on second. I was completely shocked when we couldn't push 1 runner across the plate with 1st and 2nd and no outs. I didn't mean to take my frustrations out on a fellow fan and blogger. Please accept my apologies. It's frustrating when you should win games and end up losing them. Whatever the game is over and we lost because we couldn't execute. Good teams execute night in and night out. Think about this...wouldn't you expect your cleanup hitter to drive in those runs? If not your cleanup hitter then who? Also...it's really not that great of an advantage (if at all) just b/c the runner is at 3rd. I'd much rather have Cantu with runners at 1st and 2nd with 0 outs than to have the 6th hitter up with 1 out and the bases loaded. Yes I would expect the cleanup hitter to drive in those runs but as of late he hasn't been doing that. Jorge Cantu is not a cleanup up hitter. He has 10 homeruns for crying out loud. Earlier in the season he was driving in runs left and right. This isn't the case right now. There is a huge advantage in my mind with a guy on 3rd base (especially Bonaficiout because of his "speed") because a pass ball, wild pitch, sac fly, single, or any error in the infield scores that run. If one of these things happens (except for the single) then the guy is only on 3rd base instead of jumping around on the diamond because of a walk off. If Cantu would have moved the runners over then Dan Uggla (I think he batted behind Canut that evening?) would have been up. He usually tries to hit homeruns every night so you would of thought he could of gotten a ball out to the outfield. Either way you said that most anyone on this board could have managed better than Fredi did. If I would have been managing we would have won that game. Cantu would have been pissed because he would have had to play team ball and bunt, but in the end we would have had a victory because the other way sure didn't work. In the 9th with 2 guys on and no outs I am trying to manufacture a run if players are called upon to bunt three times in a row to get the runners home. Poor execution with runners in scoring position has been the Marlins downfall. Look at everyones average except for Hanley's and it's disgusting, high OPS and OBS or not it doesn't matter unless you score. Sorry for the rant this is just how I feel, but this is what this board is for no? At the moment it's kinda hard to look at his HR totals because he was experiencing weakness from medication for so long. But if you looked at his RBI totals he is second on the team right now. That means he is getting the job done with RISP. I just find it hard to take the bat out of the hands of a guy that is getting the job done when he has the opportunities. Ya it would have been a tough decison and I can see where you would let the cleanup hitter hit in that situation. It's sad however that they couldn't manufacture a run when they needed it most! Good thoughts.

7/19 Post Game
We need more bullpen help and a closer. Then we would start winning games!
-
Buyers ( : or Sellers ) :
It's is nearly 100% right now that we are buyers, considering we have one of the weakest strength of schedules the rest of the season, only I believe behind the Brewers. The thing is the front office is looking for bullpen help right now in the market, and that's probably what we are going to go out and get. If you consider trading Hermida and/or Uggla as "selling", than sure we could be sellers as well. But yeah based on what we have in front of us we should without a doubt be in the race until the very end. Can you explain to me why the FO wants bullpen help? It's not the bullpen who has cost the Marlins most of their games. The offense and poor execution cost us most of the games. Why aren't they looking for another hitter/big bat?

Freddi Made 2 bad moves last night. One was walking Paul f***ing Bako to face Jayson Werth. The other was not bunting with Cantu in the 9th with Bonifacio at 2nd and Hanley at 1st. I think Bonifacio bunted on his own with 2 outs there. No, not bunting there is actually a good move. How do you figure? You win in the 9th not the 12th. We lost, therefore, it was a stupid move! Cantu is struggling right now, his average isn't that good, yeah he has one of the highest percentages on the team with RISP but so what. He didn't get the job done because only a base hit in that situation would have scored that run. Stupid Move. I really hope this is a joke. Also, Cantu is batting .285, the 2nd highest average on the team behind Hanley amongst regulars, FWIW. I really hope you aren't serious and watched the game, we really did lose. So what if Cantu is hitting .285, your proud of that? I can see your point of expecting Cantu to drive in the winning run but small ball in that situation seems more logical. With a guy on third there are many more ways to score. He didn't get the hit or move the runners therefore stupid move (repeated a thousand times).

Who would you want to manage the team?
I'm bunting anyone in the league in that situation except for Albert Pujols because if the bunt is successful then the options to score and conclude the game are: single, pass ball, sac fly, wild pitch, balk, plus the double play is not in effect. Hell anything would of been better than what they did last night.

Just an idea
Dan Uggla and Ryan Tucker for Matt Capps and Steven Pearce. As we all know, Uggla's gone. The Pirates look like they're about to part ways with Freddy Sanchez. Not only would we get our legit closer but we would add an outfielder that's ready for the majors that OPSed .877 in his minor league career and has above average defense. Pearce would allow us to platoon Coghlan and Bonifacio and call up Sanchez to play third. What say you? legit closer?

Grade the Marlins: 1st Half
I think it's a valid point that the Phils should be further ahead, but injuries and starting pitching problems have held them back. Anyway, here's what I am giving the team: Starting Pitching: B -Johnson has been lights out. Chris Volstad has been good, with a couple of minor hiccups. Nolasco is still working on things, but for the most part it's getting better. Andrew Miller has been a borderline catastrophe, and has pitched maybe one decent game the whole year. Anibal Sanchez struggled, and is now on the DL for the foreseeable future. Sean West wasn't half bad, but struggled as his time in the majors wore on. He'll be a major factor later in the season, and especially next year. Many of the fill-in starters were abysmal, like John Koronka and Graham Taylor. Relief Pitching: C- -Many, many issues here. After trading the inconsistent Kevin Gregg, the Fish hand the closer's role to Matt Lindstrom, who so far has been 10 times more inconsistent than Gregg ever was. The lack of a true closer has been a major downside for the Fish. Unfortunately many of us saw this coming. Leo Nunez has been good, with some struggles. Kiko Calero, a non-roster invitee from Spring Training, has been the team's best reliever all season. He has saved many games from falling into the toilet. Two relievers that began the season with the Marlins, Logan Kensing and Hayden Penn, were both let go after a series of disastrous appearances. Dan Meyer, the team's lefty specialist, has been unhittable and a pleasant surprise for the team. Renyel Pinto has struggled many times, but has been more good than bad overall. Burke Badenhop, the long reliever, has improved greatly from a bad 2008 season. Brian Sanches has been adequate at times, but absolutely awful on other occasions. Hitting: B- -As usual, no one needs to worry about Hanley performing. Jorge Cantu has been relatively consistent, although had a major power outage during the last month. Baker hasn't been that great at the plate, but he's still an improvement over anything we had before him last season. Of course, Dan Uggla seems to enjoy either looking like a fool striking out, or like a Greek God hitting towering homeruns. Unfortunately, most of what we end up with is the former. I don't think anything else needs to be said about Bonifacio's issues. Chris Coghlan has been a decent fill-in in left field, but has not completely figured out major league hitting yet. Cody Ross, for the first time given a permanent starting job, has proven that he deserves it. Right now he is our best outfielder offensively. Not much needs to be said about Jeremy Hermida's myriad of issues, either... Bench: B- -Backup catcher Ronny Paulino has turned into a great addition for the team from the bench. Same with Ross Gload, who has been the best player on the team's bench all season. Veteran Wes Helms has had little success at the plate, but is a great defensive substitution later in games. Brett Carroll has greatly improved on his previous track record of below mediocre hitting. He's on the verge of earning himself a longer-term starting job, if he keeps up the hitting. Although not initially a bench player, Cameron Maybin was a colossal failure when he spent a month with the team in April. Hopefully he will improve when he comes back up later in the season. Fielding: D -Unfortunately this team has yet to improve much at all from the horrible performance in 2008 which greatly hampered them. The addition of Emilio Bonifacio to the infield has made the infield's defense far worse. Coaching: C -The coaching staff seems to have developed a habit for making implausible strategic decisions this year, particularly in regards to the bullpen. Many mistakes have been made in choosing whether or not to go after a particular hitter, more than last season. The coaches invested too much patience in players like Maybin, Bonifacio, Kensing, Lindstrom, and Miller. The result of this was games getting out of hand when they never needed to. Although they seem to have fixed some of the over-confidence in Matt Lindstrom, if anything they have swung too far to the opposite side, not letting their closer get out of a jam with two outs. Instead they have made a pitching change on more than one occasion when there were two outs with one or less runners on base at the time. This is only going to make things worse. Overall: B- -As a whole this season, the starting pitching has kept the team in many games that the inconsistent offense would otherwise have lost. Unfortunately, in games where the pitchers struggled, the offense rarely lifted them up with a big performance. The bullpen has had long stretches where they kept the team in games, but just as many where they blew games. The lack of a closer to lock up the ends of close games will likely be the team's undoing if no changes are made. Some addition needs to be made on offense, particularly at 3rd base or in right or left field. It would be nice if the defense would improve, but I'm afraid that the coaching has done everything they can to fix the problem by this point. Likely team finish: 2nd place, no wild-card. 83-87 wins. More inconsistent? Hardly. He has blown 2 saves this whole year and the one he did blow the Fish won. Gregg blew 4 saves his first year as closer and 9 in his second year. We will see where he is at after 2 years of closing. Stay tuned.
