The 2004 Wildcard Thread
Hopefully tonight's game was a sign of things to come, but we need the 5-7 inning AJ Burnett as opposed to the 1-4 inning we saw tonight.? Also, someone needs to find Josh Beckett's mojo immediately. 500202 I could have sworn that AJ pitched 7 innings last night... and I could have sworn he struck out 9. 500374 AJ's control was awful in the early innings (1st-4th) and he put the Marlins in a 3-0 hole early on. He redeemed himself with solid 5th-7th. He needs to be more consistent, that's what I'm saying.

The 2004 Wildcard Thread
Usually 90 wins is the target for a WC spot, that means the Marlins have to go 36-18 the rest of the way. If we can do this, the teams currently ahead of us would fall by the wayside, just like last season. By the way, the Marlins finished last year 31-20, including a 1-8 span in late August. Hopefully tonight's game was a sign of things to come, but we need the 5-7 inning AJ Burnett as opposed to the 1-4 inning we saw tonight. Also, someone needs to find Josh Beckett's mojo immediately.

Sportsline.com: Marlins close to deal for Valdez
I'll take a 9-6 pitcher with 97 career wins as a 5th starter any day. It's pretty safe to say Valdez is better than D. Oliver. Valdez has always seemed to pitch well against the Marlins.

NO Larry Walker !
This just in from Rotoworld.com The Marlins are close to acquiring Ismael Valdez from the Padres for a pitching prospect. Kind of surprising that the Padres are giving up pitching, but Valdez is expendable. Sterling Hitchcock is coming back, and Dennis Tankersley is deserving of a real opportunity. If traded, Valdez would take over as the Marlins' fifth starter. 486565 Sounds like a good deal to me.

NO Larry Walker !
Dont underestimate the fact that Encarnacion is a great defensive player 486558 Yes...and as much as I love Cabs, he is a disaster waiting to happen in right field (Braves game in April for starters). Before anyone jumps up and down and thinks I'm crazy, Cabrera is a star on this team, but you can't pass up an opportunity to get a great defensive player like Enc who can also put up adequate (not great) offensive numbers. They'll find a place for Cabs (1st base if necessary), he's naturally better in the infield anyway.

easley sure as hell can hit 10x better than enc. 486516 How many RBI's did Easley have last season? 486536 Are people impaired? This ISNT last season, this is 2004! 486546 Read my last post so you may understand

Don't get me wrong, I like Easley, but as a reserve.

What? Look at the stats for easley in the pas years anf then JuanE. Do your homework before you say something stupid. 486528 [/quoteTell me again how enc's prior accomplishments will help us THIS year. Enc is batting .235 this year. Nuff said. 486535 Easley's not exactly tearing it up either.

And even after 2 straight losses to Montreal
Isn't Wayne starting tomorrow?? Eek.? I don't like our chances. 474029 Way to stay positive. 474037 Hard to stay positive after last 2 games, and really since May 31st. Somebody needs to light a serious fire under these guys (Jack are you reading this?).

40-48 record
18 wins since May 31st seems just right for this team right now. Tonight pretty much summed up how the Marlins have played during much of that stretch. No hitting with RISP, and Castillo and Lowell both strike out looking in the 9th down by 4 runs. On top of that, the usually reliable defense let us down big time. The Expos, the EXPOS, without their best player, capitalized on every opportunity tonight. The reality of it is that the Marlins really weren't hitting much during the 30-20 stretch to start the season, but they did the little things and found ways to win just like last season. I'm sorry, but 2 of our top guys looking at third strikes in the 9th inning and a catcher failing to step on home on a force play are signs of a .500 team AT BEST. It's not over yet, but they better hurry up 'cause the Braves and Phillies have room for improvement as well.

bullpen sort of stinks
You shouldn't have to bring in Benitez with 0 outs in the 8th in a tie game at home. If this was a do or die game, then yes, but tonight's game did not qualify as such. The set up guys have to do their job. I say it's time to give Bump the 8th inning role, he's been pretty solid since he was brought back up. Koch is another possibility, but right now let Bump prove himself.

NO HEART
The sad thing about this is that Manzanillo has only had 2 bad outings that I can remember, his last 2. Bump gets Valent to hit it 2 inches to the left and the inning is over with the score 4-3. Of course it didn't happen that way...the Marlins have not gotten many breaks this season. But you need to create your own breaks, and it's not happening. I have to believe that this team with it's current roster can and should play much better, and it's not too late for that to happen. However, a few more games like tonight's and it could be the beginning of the end. Bottom line tonight...Phillies down by 4 late, come back and win. Marlins up by 1 late, lose by 3.

NO HEART
bulls***, Sea Bass hits the homer and then the lead is given up. Choi comes back, hits the homer, puts them on top and AJ goes 7. You cannot win games giving up more than 3 runs a game with any offense. We need pitchers, we need them now. 449648 It's not as simple as that. We need offense, and we need it when runners are in scoring position. Tonight was but another example of what we lack this year that we had plenty of last year. The Mets were able to drive in runs when they had to tonight. We didn't. Pitching is part of it, not the whole.

Marlins stadium plan passes
A good day indeed! We're one step closer to getting the stadium. I was quite skeptical of the team's intentions early on, but in the past month or so they have shown that they are truly committed to keeping the team in S FL. Really, the team, city, and county have all stepped up. I feel pretty confident that the stadium will eventually get built, and that the $30 mil gap will be filled if not by the state tax rebate then by some other source. I don't think the team would be so set on breaking ground in December or January (before they would know about a tax rebate) unless they already have an alternate plan.

The Worst Bandwagoner Antic
I am going with a write-in entry - "Knee Jerk Reaction by Die-Hard Fans" I've been to 3 games this year, 2 of them sell-outs. The crowds have been great. What's wrong with being enthusiastic, would you all rather have them sit on their hands or boo our team whenever one of those fly balls don't leave the infield? Geez!

New Ballpark Similarities to Wrigley?
I wanna know if its gonna be a pitchers or hitters ball park people have said that it would have similar dimensions and features to the pro (traingle, teal monster) Another factor which could make it a pitcher's park is the wind. The stadium faces southeast, which is right into the prevailing wind in Miami during the spring and summer months.
-
New Ballpark Similarities to Wrigley?
Looks more like Bobby Maduro to me than Wrigley. Bobby Maduro was in a mostly warehouse district, while the OB is almost 100% residential with some commercial areas on 7th Street and 17th Avenue.

New Ballpark Similarities to Wrigley?
Does anyone else see the potential similarities between the proposed new ballpark and Wrigley Field? Wrigley is on a traditional city block in a dense urban neighborhood, as would the new park. You also have the apartment buildings and duplexes on the south side of NW 3rd ST which would be behind right field. Imagine being able to sit on the roof of those buildings to watch a game, just as they do in Wrigley. I'm not talking about tradition or even the potential design of the new park, just looking at the similarities in the layout of the surrouding neighborhood.

Is it me or does Ramon....
I don't think he's gotten his fair share of playing time. Don't jump all over me, but it's mostly been Red out there. I like Ramon and think he'll do great things for us, given more chances. Redmond's been hitting too well to keep out of the lineup. Ramon has had his chances, but is hitting below .200. You have to go with the guy who's playing better, right now it's Redmond.

Metrorail
does this transportation plan include making the metrorail suck less? i would still use it to go to games if i had no other way. besides i hate driving. I would think so. Check it out for yourself. People's Transportation Plan

Metrorail
I know that when the original plans for a conjoined stadium at the OB was announced a while back, they had mentioned that there was going to be a metrorail stop added at the site. I'm sure they will find a way to set up a stop at the new stadium. I like the idea of taking the train to the park. Go Marlins and Go Samson, While many complain about Samson and Loria (fat HAnk) they have brought us a World Series, kept the core of the team together and now are close to finalizing a stadium deal. They might not be as wealthy as other owners, but these guys have put their money where their mouth is. According to the information provided by the People's Transportation Plan, the first 2 lines to be constructed are: East-West Corridor which will run along 836 from FIU to Airport to Downtown, with a stop at the Orange Bowl. and North Corridor along 27th Avenue to PPS. These lines are ready to enter the final design and construction phase. I doubt whether they can build them in time for 2007, but soon after would be fine with me.

Arriola's on WQAM with good stadium news
I caught the tail end of an interview with Arriola on NBC6, and one thing he said is that the Marlins contribution has increased from $137 million. When asked how much, he said "not as much as the city would like." He also said that they are only short the $30 million now needed from the state. The Marlins lobbyist in Tallahassee said its the bottom of the 9th with one out for the chance for state money. The report went on to say in terms of longshots, this deal is still the longest of longshots. NBC6, and Ike Seamans in particular, are biased against the Marlins' stadium. Back last October when the Marlins finished beating the Giants in the NLDS, Seamans wrote an editorial in the Miami Herald basically saying that we shouldn't build the stadium for millionaire owners...etc etc. He made some good points, but the tone of his article was extremely cynical and negative, especially considering the Marlins were just beginning their playoff run and the town was all excited. I wrote him an e-mail explaining to him that although he made a lot of good points, the overall tone and timing of his piece was bad. He replied back to me quite condescendingly and basically making fun of the fact that I was open to the Marlins getting a new stadium. To make a long story short...don't believe everything NBC6 or Seamans has to say about the stadium.

Arriola's on WQAM with good stadium news
I don't know why you call miami a sh** city. Do we have a shi** goverment? yes. But the city has a lot to offer and a lot of cultural diversity which I love. Judge the City by the people living in it, and not by the government. Amen!
