March 15, 200422 yr The Ides of March are upon on and the deal for the Baseball stadium was supposed to be done by today. While talks still continue, I can't begin to express how disappointed I am with both sides that neither one could agree on a plan to help build a stadium for the World Series Champions. Every other team when they have needed one has gotten one(San Diego, Philadelphia, Houston, Milwakee(sp?) and so many others) and yet two sides cannot get together to get this deal done. It would be incredible to wake up tomorrow morning(or today) and find out that funding has been settled upon and that a firm location with a roof is ready to start being built. Quite frankly I don't care where they put the damn thing, just get it done and get it over with! I guess we'll find out something sometime today about what is going on. :confused :marlins
March 15, 200422 yr :wow  :crying :boo-woo :tissue :boxed :hanged :violin (my emotions leading from one to another after no deal has come forth upon march. 15th)
March 15, 200422 yr It is very disappointing to see...maybe somehow baseball can be saved in Miami, but they may jus have to start looking elsewhere cause Loria sure as hell isnt gonna stand for losing money non stop for the more than four years. We will see I guess, maybe time to looka t something in broward or Palm
March 15, 200422 yr Samson is scheduled to speak with the media regarding the stadium issue today. It will be interesting to see what he says and whether representative of the city and the county will be in attendance. I may be proved wrong but expect the county to take the lead role between the two municipalities from here out.
March 15, 200422 yr they could always just say negotiations are continuing & extend their own deadline... it was basically self-imposed anyway.

March 15, 200422 yr Marlins President David Samson is planning to meet with the media sometime this afternoon to address the team's efforts to secure financing for a new ballpark. Team officials had been working under today's self-imposed deadline to complete a deal. The selling of Miami Arena may prolong negotiations. Sun-Sentinel link

March 15, 200422 yr Well, it's the 15th, no mention of the deadline in any of today's Marlins articles that I've read on insider, anyone heard anything? I think that it's increasingly likely that the Marlins leave Miami and look to Palm Beach County and Broward...
March 15, 200422 yr If anyone catches the press conference or whatever it is on the news let us know!
March 15, 200422 yr the press conference is at 4pm. I called Program Director Josh Darrow @ WQAM to ask him if the station will be broadcasting it live and his answer was no, they were not. I won't bother you with the entire content of my call but he had no response to my comment that Marlins fans might want to hear it live rather than second hand other than to say they'd have a report on what transpired. I suggest you all do the same. His number is 305-650-0164. If you do call may I suggest you be polite and remind him that this isn't just "any" news conference, this is about the future of the franchise in south florida.
March 15, 200422 yr I think that it's increasingly likely that the Marlins leave Miami and look to Palm Beach County and Broward... If that's the case, then they have A LOT of catching up to do. By now it's pretty obvious that neither county (i.e. county officials) is terribly interested in building a stadium. I agree with Marlins 2003 that Miami-Dade County would take over if any talks with the city fall through. I get the feeling that they've been "waiting in the wings" all this time.
March 15, 200422 yr I get the impression that Mayor Penelas wants, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is his run for the US Senate, to secure a plan to build the Marlins a new stadium as one of the achievements he can point to during his tenure. There's so many people with so many agendas it's impossible to figure out how this will come out. I don't see any way that Broward or Palm Beach are really options at this point. neither has the population density nor the resources to be a valued alternative. It's Miami-Dade or bust.

I agree with Marlins 2003 that Miami-Dade County would take over if any talks with the city fall through. I get the feeling that they've been "waiting in the wings" all this time. And Miami is really interested? Palm Beach County has two of the wealthiest areas in the state (Boca and Palm Beach), so certainly there would be parties interested in bringing a Major League Franchise closer to their homes. As it is, Palm Beach County is a substantial market for the Marlins, and Miami has only offered $73 million. If the Marlins were to have negotiated with Palm Beach or Broward, surely they could have gotten that amount from either county. The Marlins hurt themselves by negotiating exclusively with Miami. Besides, as far as I'm concerned, the only deadline for the stadium is the November date when Lowell's contract becomes voided.
March 15, 200422 yr What would make you think Broward, which is flat broke, has the economic resources to offer the Marlins anything? After their experience with the Office Depot Center they are the last people on earth to want to help build the Marlins a new stadium. And Palm beach, as wealthy as it is doesn't have the population to support major league baseball. It's just like Las Vegas, all that money and not enough people to support a team.
March 15, 200422 yr Agreed. People cant be buying two seats and only sitting in one. Miami IS the best option for this franchise. Those 'rich' people up in Broward/Palm Beach can always drive their limos or helicopters down to Miami to catch a game. Seriously folks, I think something is being ironed out. I expect a lot of answers will be given today at this conference. Good news just around the corner.
March 15, 200422 yr As it is, Palm Beach County is a substantial market for the Marlins, and Miami has only offered $73 million. Exactly. ANd to my knowledge, I BELIEVE either the city of Boca Raton or Palm Beach County is giving FAU more than $73 Million to finance an Arena/Dome. Why couldn't they do what Miami wanted to do with the Orange Bowl and put that money toward one facility that can accomodate both? Makes sense to me.

And Miami, which generously can be described as apathetic, is the answer for the Marlins woes? They've had this team for over a decade and have been so "supportive" that they've essentially been run out of the county, and perhaps the state. I'll admit I'm biased because I live in PB, but come on there is so much wrong with Miami's actions (or lack there of) that it's just sickening. It's time for a change...

Because $73 million isn't enough to get close to financing a stadium. The idea in Miami-Dade was for the county to kick in their chunk PLUS the city come up with the rest, or close to the rest.
