He'll adjust, he's just having a bad start. Give him time.

no he wont

but people need to understand that

he is just a stopgap till Allen James is ready Exactly! It would be nice for Oliver's ERA to be in the 4s but he is the scrub of our staff and is just holding it down until AJ is back. He isn't awful, but he is a decent major leaguer and isn't doing awful. damn.

if a 5.89 ERA isnt awful...

I would hate to see what awful is. Well the Marlins are 2-1 when he pitches, so at least he gives us a chance . . .

did you not read my first post in this thread?

i kno oliver is a stopgap.

i didnt like signing him.

i liked giving him a damn raise from last year even less.

i liked guaranteeing his contract the least.

i was 100% in favor of having an open competition for that spot....but the brass didnt agree with me it seems...

unfortunate.

Das, don't you understand he's a stopgap? OMG

I agree with you on the signing and the guaranteed contract. DO definately didn't warrant a raise but got one anyway to pitch for the champs, whatever. He is doing what he was brought here to do though. No one expected him to hang with the other 4 horses but I wouldn't go as far as to say he sucks. He's a #5 and he's playing like an avg. #5. Hard to say if Admin's boyfriend would be any better. I'd like to see him get a suprise start in the next few weeks.

oliver had an era of about 4.5 in colorado.

and about 5.5 on the road.

you cant use the colorado excuse.

and you people are blind.

no

you

are

blind

Oliver is a solid pitcher who is going to put up good numbers. His ERA cant be broken down as simply as you did - but what else would we expect from you.

Oliver had the following ERAs by opponent last year:

SF 30IP 4.50

LA 26IP 3.81

AZ 22IP 4.09

SD 21.1IP 6.33

By stadium:

Coors 78IP 4.50

Dodger Stadium 21.2IP 2.08

Qualcomm 14.2IP 7.36

Other than the anomaly that is San Diego, Oliver pitched fairly well last season. Considering he pitched well in the most ridiculous hitter's park in history (Coors) and in a pitcher's park similar to our own (Dodger Stadium) I dont see how this guy doesnt put together a solid season.

Say he sucks all he wants, but dont try and use stats. Your argument is very weak.

The top 4 of the rotation has spoiled you. I can remember watching Marlin games in which 2-5 were all similar in talent to Oliver. Is he in the class of our young guns? Hell no, but he is a good 5th starter who can pitch. His ERA is not good right now, but he is keeping us in games-which is all most teams ask of their 5.

What we gain by starting Oliver instead of a Wayne or Tejera is consistency. How many times will Oliver last 3 innings?? I garauntee he will last longer more consistently than Wayne or Tejera would have. I'm a big Wayne supporter, but he is young and we are defending World Champs. Oliver might ruin our amazing starting pitching statistics, but he's gonna consistently give us chances to win without decimating our 'pen.

I dont see how this guy doesnt put together a solid season.

Because even after having a solid season last year, his lifetime ERA is over 5? Because in the last 6 years, he's had 2 seasons (1999 and 2003) that could be considered solid?

How come you picked those parks? Why'd you leave out SF, which is also a pitcher's park? His ERA was over 8 there. Not many innings (11) but neither is 21 innings in Dodger Stadium.

He faded pretty badly in the second half of the season last year - 4.67 ERA before the All Star break and 5.57 after.

Oliver is a mediocre pitcher at best. He's a big step down from our #5 last year (Pavano). He's cheap and he is just a #5 so we don't need that much. But he needs to eat some innings and go a little further than 5.1 innings the day after we went through our bullpen.

Oliver has yet to have a solid start.

He has allowed alot of runs in his last 2 starts but he has been hitting good he got a hit his first game and today to drive in Redmond.

What?

His first outing was a good one.

How about the fact that he had a 4.67 ERA before the All-Star break and then 5.57 after the break.

His batting average against was .284.

He hasn't had a season with 20+ starts and an ERA under 5 since 1999.

He put up a beautful back-to-back run of 7.42 and 6.02 in Texas, then put up a 4.66 in 58 innings in Boston before his "comeback" year last year.

I would have preferred Justin Wayne get this chance, but so it goes.

thats the real question...

i point out coors because people always use the arguement that he was in colorado so his numbers are skewed.

you point out 3 stadiums.

*yawn*

you mention me having a weak arguement....what exactly is yours?

and as i stated a while back...this is not based on one year

its based on having watched him for many years.

have you?

i should of quoted jonny's post....

but you made a good point toward him...which i went with in my response.

Das:

Is he an adequate fifth starter or not?

Wayne has outpitched him by far. In four innings!

i was 100% in favor of having an open competition for that spot....but the brass didnt agree with me it seems...

unfortunate.

The brass didn't agree with you? HA! Who the heck are you anyway? A moderator from Texas on a Marlins message board? I didn't realize Beinfest and Hill were consulting you on their moves. Weren't you the guy who said Pierre would "suck" also?

We all realize Oliver is a number 5 starter. Do you have to be so harsh and say he "sucks"? What's the point? Oliver will be in the pen by June. Just cross your fingers and hope he can get the job done adequately until AJ is ready.

I wonder if DO can play short? He swings a better bat than SeaBass.

Also, the Spurs are going down tonight.

:thumbdown

he makes $750,00 because he is a left-handed starter

and honestly, who cares how bad he sucks

HE IS OUR 5th STARTER!!!!!!!!!!!!

if he goes 10-12 we should be more than happy

and you people need to get AJ Burnett out of your head. no need rushing him back just because our 5th starter wont go 15-10.

let burnett come back when he is ready and chances are he wont even make a start this year unless we are either out of contention come August or so far in the lead that we are safe
