I am a big Conine guy, but I feel that juan would be more valuable to this team in right with the versatile Conine adding to our depth with Easely. I think a healthy Juan, like in 03, will put up decent numbers and his incredible defense will not go unnoticed.
January 26, 200521 yr Juan, Juan healthy has more potential than niner, i dont think niner can give us another 90-95 rbi season, Enc though has more power and if healthy is more capable of that, plus hes a much better RF with a cannon you need for RF.
January 26, 200521 yr Lots of people would prefer Mr. Marlin, but I agree with you on this. Enc at right would save a lot of headaches since Miggy is a liability at RF in my opinion. Additionally, Conine might not be an everyday player as he once was now with his age and what, 2 surgeries this offseason? Conine is the man.... but I just believe Enc would be better suited at right than Miggy, and he still has that 5-tool thing going for him.....
January 26, 200521 yr I hate seeing Encarnacion up at the plate...its like AUTOMATIC out I just hope some team is Desperate for that loser and gives us a good starter in return. Who knows maybe Valdes and Encarnacion for someone of Millwoods caliber...Wouldnt that be SWEET!
January 26, 200521 yr I agree with FishTank...Conine is great...but i just think that Enc. fits better. Having Conine and Easley in the bench makes me feel real comfortable. I also think that Enc will play better defense in right than would Conine. One thing that I am glad of is that we are having this discussion...as opposed of us not getting Delgado, Conine playing first, and having Easley as our only real backup.

January 26, 200521 yr You know what you're going to get with Niner. Enc continues to get worse each season, and unless he changes his approach at the plate he's not going to improve. Plus we're paying him more than 9er.
January 26, 200521 yr I'd platoon Niner with Encarnacion... mostly starting Encarnacion, but bringing in Conine late to replace Delgado for defensive purposes. Also use Conine to give Delgado some days off to take pressure of Carlos's knees. Having both of these guys gives us great versatility without much drop off in talent like you would have in other circumstances (like bringing in Aguila to replace Conine or Encarnacion, for example, or using Easley to give Carlos some rest), and I like that.

January 27, 200521 yr Yea you know what your gona get wih Conine, its about .280/15/80 Encarnacion is 10 years younger, and the last healthy season batted .270/19/94 Why take a chance with Encarnacion healthy again, he had surgery maybe hell do as good or better than 2003, You think Niner with the injurys this offseason is going to even exceed his numbers last year of .280/14/83. All im saying is just give Enc another chance healthy, if he doesnt produce then put int he 38 year old.

I can live with players that strike out a lot. If they draw a lot of walks to go along with the strikeouts, and Enc definitely does not.
January 27, 200521 yr It's too early...we have to go through S.T. first, remember both are coming off surgery in the offseason, and while I think it's a catch-22 more of an even call, I think Juan coming off the bench as a defensive replacement/pinch hitter/pinch runner serves our team better depth wise than anything else. Remember, we may be careful with Delgado, so Conine could see some time at first base as well against some of the tougher lefties we face. Either way, it's up in the air.

January 27, 200521 yr Well, I say go with Encarnacion until the offense suffers to the point where we are losing games because Conine is not starting. Look, this offense can handle having Encarnacion out there instead of Conine. And like others have explained, Encarnacion is just a better fit. I mean, you play Conine and once AGAIN Cabrera is flip-floped back and forth from left to right. I'm sure our star player isn't going to appreciate it. Cabrera is pretty damn good in left field, Encarnacion is awesome in right field. I'll take the offensive hit for the defensive excellence. And, even though I'm prepared to accept Juan's lesser bat, we might not even have to. He could very well suprise some people at the plate.
January 27, 200521 yr Encarnacion. We can't afford to take the drop-off in defense. Encarnacion will hit .260-.270, which is about 10 points less than Conine. That would equate to 5 fewer hits over the course of the season. Plus Encarnacion is more likely to hit 5 or more HRs than Conine. Conine will be much more effective off the bench. All things considered. Encarnacion starts in RF.
