February 28, 200521 yr Looks like we are gonna have to take down John Smoltz on opening day: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2001475
February 28, 200521 yr Well he hasn't started a game in 6 years.. but last year: 9.2 IP, 0 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 7 K in his career: 16-10 with a 2.27 ERA in 135.0 IP
February 28, 200521 yr Am I the only one who doesn't think Smoltz can make it as a starter? I don't wish him ill, but I can't imagine him making it until July.
February 28, 200521 yr I'm with you.. I think it was a mistake for Atlanta to bring him back to the rotation. I think his arm falls off midseason. He's 39 years old, hasn't started a game in 6 years and got hit a lot harder the 2nd half of the season.. To tell you the truth, I'm a little surprised with all the Smoltz hype on ESPN.

I dont think he can make it through a whole season. If he didnt start in 1 year I wouldnt think this, but he hasnt started for a few years... its going to ware him out!

February 28, 200521 yr he basically forced his way into the rotation. said he wasn't going to want to be anywhere where he wasn't starting.
February 28, 200521 yr I think he will give a good 200 innings this year. Never underestimate the heart of a true champion. Damn these nightmares better just be those from the past.
February 28, 200521 yr Isnt it harder on an arm to be pitching out of the pen? I know thats what Smoltz has said. Plus if his TJS is completely healed, I think he will do well. Thats gonna be an interesting series with Smoltz and Hudson going up against Beckett and Burnett(if thats how they do it).
February 28, 200521 yr Ya never know guys..anything can happen. Smoltz may win 20 games this year, or his arm could fall off by mid-June, I dont know. But its still February so lets wait till June/July and see if his arm is still alive..
February 28, 200521 yr I don't know how long he can hold up as a starter. But I don't understand how all these baseball analysts love this move by the Braves. With Smoltz in the pen, you basically had to play a 7 or 8 inning game every night. If you trailed after 7, you were done. Colb is a very hittable pitcher, he doesn't strike fear into anyone. I think they lost a big advantage by moving Smoltz back to the rotation.
February 28, 200521 yr I like the fact that he is starting on Opening Day, I would love to start off the season, with a win over not only the Braves, but the man that has been the face of the franchise for so long as well.
February 28, 200521 yr i expected Smoltz to start. I dont think it was a wise move for the Braves to have him start on Opening Day. Hell start off ok and then gradually decrease to less than average. He is getting old and hasnt started an Opening Day in a long time. Well just have to see what Marlins pitcher has the better spring training and go from there.

March 1, 200521 yr He'll probably be lights out for the first two innings.... and then after that....... :whistle
March 1, 200521 yr Damn...that sucks.....I was so looking forward to Tim Hudson on Opening Day. I wanted to see th fish rock him!!!!
