Marlins recalled infielder Joe Dillon from Triple-A Albuquerque.

Dillon, who was hitting .314/.410/.650 in 137 AB for Albuquerque, isn't really much of a second baseman, but perhaps he will get a start or two at the position before Luis Castillo returns. He's worthy of a permanent spot on the Florida bench, though it's not all that likely he'll have one.

Marlins designated LHP Jim Crowell for assignment.

He earned his demotion by giving up six runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief on Tuesday. May. 18 - 3:27 am et

THANK YOU BASEBALL GODS!!!!!!!!!!!

He must have gotten the call at like 2am, imagine being woken up at 2am and told that you're going to be in the big leagues tomorrow :thumbup .

But what will we do without that seventh reliever?

:p

I wish Joe all he best of luck. He should add some pop from the bench and stories to the papers.

Joe Dillon deserves a shot with 39 homers last season and 13 already this year! I hope he can give us some pop with Luis out.

Next, I hope Travis Smith is demoted again. He hasn't cut it. I think the Fish are waiting for Tim Spooneybarger to return before we demote him. But I like Randy Messenger and Chad Bentz in AAA. They have pitched well recently.

You'll probably see Dillon at some point tonight.

Having been called up from Albuquerque it's a short hop to LA.

Where (as in what position) he's going to play is open to debate. Perhaps he'll be used exclusively as a pinch-hitter. Reports on Castillo is that he's nearly ready, you won't bench Lowell for Dillon (would you??????), not with Cabrera the likely candidate at third, Dillon's OF play is sub-major league average...it all leads me to believe he's being shopped.

Joe Dillon has earned the right to a looksee in the bigs. He may wind up a majorleaguer but my guess is it won't be with the Marlins.

Marlins2003, I agree with you. I am not sure what position Joe will play. Good riddance with Joe Crowell... he sucks... he just isn't Major League caliber.

We should get rid of Travis Smith and replace him with someone competent. I mean, he's got an ERA of over 8... I bet Messenger can do better than that.

yes i was really hoping this would happen. i posted yesterday that if Easley didn't get his ave. up we should call up dillon and now he is here.

i hope he gets some P.T. to show off what he can do.

Not that I disagree that he has a future elsewhere, but who would be "shopping" for a non-prospect without a real defensive position? I'm surprised Willingham didn't get the call...he'd be someone to showcase for a week.

Alright. I've wanted to see Joe get a shot.

Good to see Crowell go. There are so many better options in AAA. He had no business be called up in the first place.

Thank the baseball gods. It's about damn time the Marlins call up our minor league phenom 3B Joe Dillon. He finally gets his chance. He'll do alright.

Good move -- Hopefully you guys aren't expecting Dillon to come in right away and hit 5 HR in a week -- I'm betting it will take some time for him to adjust to major league pitching. Hopefully he adapts and becomes a nice power bat off the bench for us.

awesome

although Josh Wilson was probably the better callup here

That's one of the reasons I thought Dillon may have been called up to be shopped.

If you remember last season Dillon went on a torrid streak where he was hitting (if memory serves) near .400, was bashing HRs seemingly everyday, etc. The FO, I suspect, regrets not bringing him up and showcasing him then, because if he had approached in the majors anywhere near what he was doing in the minors, he would have been a very attractive commodity.

With the first trading deadline approaching and again, my belief is, the FO has learned from their past mistake and are going to see what he's worth if he performs well at the ML level. I think there's a misplaced notion among some people here that because of his age he's not marketable. Sure every team would like to grab a Miguel Cabrera (read very young, very good, major league ready player) and ride him for the next ten years, but there are also teams that might need a stopgap third baseman with some power who could fill their needs for one, two, three years at basically minimum wage while their wunderkind develops in their minor league system.

I believe this is probably Dillon's last season associated with the Marlins. He's quickly going to be surpassed by the Jeremy Hermida's of the world in our organization, you have Lowell and of course Miggy at third if needed so his best position is pretty much spoken for. Dillon either comes up and makes a name for himself (tradebait) and is traded, or next season he'll be playing in the minors for some other organization.

When Luis Castillo comes back, Dillion should move to 3B and sit Lowell out, or send him down to AAA for little while like what the yankees were going to do with Giambi.
