Valdez Update

Featured Replies

Valdez throwing: On the disabled list since April 14, retroactive to April 4, starter Ismael Valdez is on pace to start throwing bullpen sessions on Saturday. Progressing through a series of long-tosses from 45-to-90 feet, Valdez is battling back from a hairline fracture to his right fibula.

"This is my Spring Training," said Valdez, who injured his leg after being struck by a line drive in a Minor League game. "I'm feeling a lot better."

Asked when he will be ready to be activated, Valdez said: "I have no idea."

The veteran right-hander is still several weeks away, possibly after the All-Star break.

The way Brian Moehler has filled in as the fifth starter, it is likely that Valdez could be used in long relief or as a spot starter in the final months.

We are going to need a 6th starter with the double headers and lack of off days in the 2nd half.

Moehler will stay in the rotation as he is pitching so well. Valdez will best be used in long relief, or to replace Leiter if he continues to struggle.

Valzez in place of Leiter and Leiter in the pen for long relief whenever were down a lot early and we need someone to get through some innings....

Good to hear. We'll see what the situation is when he comes back, and he'll probably either take Leiter's spot in the rotation or be used in the bullpen to pitch 2-3+ innings at a time.

Did I see Valdez in the Marlins dugout tonight?

I've noticed him in the dugout a lot, so yes, he could have been in there tonight.

Hope he's doin alright...can't have too much pitching, really.

Random: I think Valdez in my MVP dynasty has the exact same injury, also caused by a line drive. Freaky.

Friend of mine almost died from one of these hair-line fractures. I'm serious, his blood became infected and he spent his whole 10th grade year at home. Helluva an athlete.

We need Valdez on the roster. If *knock on wood* any of our superstars gets a blister, or Leiter walks 6 batters and inning, we have nobody to turn to.

I know. That's why they should trade for a starter.

Seriously, Valdez in his career = Leiter this year.

For the life of me, I don't understand why people think Valdez is the savior of this staff. Even with Ish back, he's nothing better than an insurance starter. Leiter and Burnett need to get their acts together (I know it's not fair to put them in the same sentence, but they're both under achieving), and the offense needs to give Moehler some runs to work with.

I agree Valdez is not in the rotation of any team with aspirations of contending for the playoffs. Ideally he'd be used as basically an insurance policy if one of our starter's has to miss a start or two.

I don't see anyone saying Ish will be the savior. Most people think he will be better than Leiter.
