Posted June 28, 200519 yr i have a feeling that de los santos will be sent down.once you see jack let the pitcher get all those runs scored on him they will be sent down just like what happened to bazardo.
June 28, 200519 yr If we are losing they need to put someone in that can pitch. Not someone that's going to get knocked around. Stupid move. :banghead
June 28, 200519 yr If we are losing they need to put someone in that can pitch. Not someone that's going to get knocked around. Stupid move. :banghead 828980Â Â And who exactly would that be?
June 28, 200519 yr Put in Todd Jones at least. Even though he is the closer I'd bet he wouldnt let that GS happen. JMHO.
June 28, 200519 yr Not a good idea to put in the closer in a non-save situation. More times than not they aren't focused and let in a whole bunch of runs and the ERA skyrockets.
June 28, 200519 yr heres the deal with the bullpen mecir can hold, pitch a solid inning mota is on the way back and at his best is lights out Jones is a solid closer thats it the rest of the guys you wouldnt trust with a 5 run lead and 2 outs. those 3 guys are usually saved for save scenarios or at worst tie ballgames. Thats means in games where we trail by a couple and it goes to the bullpen we have no hope because we usually have a couple of deadbeats getting killed. A good bullpen should not only be able to hold leads (ours does) but it should keep u in close games until the finish (ours doesnt) Answer: we need another arm, possibly two in the pen and it now seems losing alfonseca was big
June 28, 200519 yr What about Bump or Riedling? I'd put either of them in before friggin Messenger or Des Los Santos. Mota lights out? Not with the fish..
June 28, 200519 yr Messenger and Bump are effective relievers, on par with Mecir. 829301  How can you call anyone an effective reliever when they've only pitched 1.2 innings in their major league career? Messenger has the potential to be an effective reliever -- thats about it right now. Will he fulfill his potential? That remains to be seen -- doesn't look very good so far, though. (16.20 ERA?) He has good stuff and a Ryan Madson-esque funk delivery, but his control has been brutal. As far as Bump is concerned -- he's only effective in mop up situations, put any pressure on him and he crumbles like a jellyfish. Same can be said for Mecir, just not quite as drastic. Our bullpen is a mess -- Jones is the only one who has proven himself capable of recording a big out. Mota, Mecir, Bump, anyone, have all consistently choked in big spots.
June 28, 200519 yr Only because the big spots have been made too frequent. Bump is a good reliever any time the infield defense is allowed to play at normal depth. Messenger has pitched well this year and is only getting better.
June 28, 200519 yr Any time Bump is put in a close game he struggles -- his command is shaky and just generally gets hit hard. He's a solid long reliever -- but simply an atrocious setup/middle relief guy. Messenger has pitched 1.2 innings -- you really think thats enough to say "he's pitched well this year"? Not to mention his ERA is 16.20!! Whatever he did in AAA is completely irrelevant to the Marlins needs.
June 28, 200519 yr Messenger should be sent down. Sure he throws a hard fastball, but its flat and people crush it.
June 28, 200519 yr Bump is rarely hit hard. All he gives up are weak groundballs that a) find holes or b) our defenders or situation create holes. Sure, he's a limited reliever but so is everyone! Some of our guys can't throw 2 innings or 2 games in a row, others struggle with runners on or bases empty, lefties or righties and so on. Also, his control is much improved over past seasons. Yep, that's been the rap on Messenger. No good offspeed or breaking stuff. That doesn't mean he can't be good reliever. Remember, he's only 23/24 and his skills improving. Billy Koch and Ben Howard each had a few good years with 95-98 mph fastballs that had no movement. The latest middling reliever linked with the Marlins, Jorge Julio also resemble those two.
June 28, 200519 yr If it's true that Chris Resop has been called up, I wonder who they're shipping back down. Hard to believe it would be Messenger after such a short stint...
June 28, 200519 yr Messenger and Bump are effective relievers, on par with Mecir. 829301 I can't remember the last time Bump even pitched. He's still here, right? Now they'll expect him to come in and be sharp. I don't care what any of you guys say, the biggest problem with the bullpen is Jack. He just does not know how to use a bullpen and that goes back years...not just with the Marlins.

June 28, 200519 yr Why are there so many bump apologists here? I like bump, but hes average at best. A ground ball hit is still a hit, and if the hitters cna hit his pitches in a way that they can find the holes in the infield, it reflects on the pitcher, not the defensive alignment.

Everybody he puts out there right now is stinking it up. The only one he can rely on is Jones but you cannot put Jones in for 3 innings for every game. If he puts in Bump, everyone complains, if he puts in Reidling, everyone complains, if he puts in Messgenger or De los Santos, everyone complains, and so on and so forth. All Jack can do is put these guys out there and if they cant get people out, not sure how this falls totally on Jack.
