July 24, 200520 yr I also agree with you Iowa... besides keeping Lowell's contract really could hurt us. Personally, i'd love to resign A-Gon to a long term deal, but he might be a little pricey. wasn't there also an article which said that keeping the current squad together would cost like 84 Million next year? We need to cut bad contracts now so that they don't become a pain in the but later.
July 24, 200520 yr Keep AJ, offer him arby, let him walk, take a few draft picks. Keep Lowell, let him work out of this slump. We aren't going anywhere anyway. Might as well let him try to regain whatever it was that he's lost. 871703 he is a free agent next year you cant offer a free agent arbitration and besides why would he accept if you could? And you only get one draft pick as compensation for losing a player to free agency.
July 24, 200520 yr Lowell is still my favorite Marlin. There's not a more professional guy on the team IMO. I feel so bad for the damn guy, he's taking his slump so hard which makes it even worse. Take a look at the guys hair. 871728 looks like he's aged about 5 years this season. I'm with you dude, Lowell's my favorite Marlin & while I certainly can't disagree with the FO looking for someone to take his contract, I am hoping like hell he turns it around and starts hitting like the old Lowell.
July 24, 200520 yr I honestly think Lowell is out of his slump and tonight he looked like the old Mike Lowell..... 3 for 5 with 3 RBI's. Good game Mike.... How easily you all forget what Mike has meant to this team..... I do not think we should trade Lowell at this point....at least give him the rest of this season and asses his season at the end of the year.
July 24, 200520 yr Ignoring all this crap: Assuming the Marlins are still in contention, they will need AJ to get them to and through the playoffs. So I think they should ride him through the year. As for Lowell, if they can get someone to take up alot of his contract I can understand the Marlins moving him to clear up salary room. I wouldn't mind Niner to LF, Cabs to 3B, though, I think a 3-Time All-Star and one of the best defenders at the hot corner can be alloted a bad year.
July 24, 200520 yr Still trade Burnett, but for a better package, by himself. Last week, we were talking about a .220 hitter. Now we're talking about a .230 hitter. Has anyone noticed his average has gone up 14 points since July 4th? He's hitting better, stick with him, too much upside if he does snap out of it. That's my take. And that .500 pitcher has a 1.27 WHIP, .241 BAA and a 3.68 ERA, with prob the nastiest stuff in the league. 871700 The Marlins expect WAAAY too much for rental of a mediocre pitcher with a below .500 record, a decent pitchers' park ERA on a good team. Do you know what the Astros paid to rent Carlos Beltran last year? One top catching prospect, one counterfeit closer (Dotel) and one mediocre prospect. The Marlins have already turned down trades that offered MORE talent than that. Maybe someone will end up paying the ridiculously inflated price, who knows?

July 24, 200520 yr Author It's obvious they read my message and are showing why on earth we should keep them.
July 24, 200520 yr So in a little over 24 hours you've changed your mind completely. What a flip-flop. And the country counts on Iowa to lead the way in each presidential election. http://sounds1.neilrogers.com/sounds/old/104.wav
July 24, 200520 yr Author Where did I say I "changed my mind completely" there ponch? I was just poking a little fun at myself.. I still think it would be smart for the team to trade Lowell if we can get rid of the whole contract because we need more power and it would allow Cabrera to move to 3B I am still in favor of what I said because it would allow for a lot of financial flexibility. 7 homeruns in the last years worth of games isn't going to cut it and we saw another example of Cabrera's shining defense today. I am still in favor of trading Burnett since we aren't going to re-sign him next year only if we get a top prospect or a decent cheap pitcher who can pitch in our rotation for the next few years. Thanks.
July 24, 200520 yr So all us Marlin fans should do what: 1. Root, root, root that the home team has financial flexibility and top prospects, or 2. Root, root, root that we win the World Series this year. You can't have it both ways. 'cause we don't have much chance of winning the World Series without AJ.

That was then, this is now. Different team. We've also won it all without Kevin Brown. And we've also somehow won it all without Braden Looper(sic). This year's team needs the pitching AJ provides.
July 25, 200520 yr We did win it all with Kevin Brown, unless you're saying the two losses in the WS games he pitched meant that he wasn't all there.
July 25, 200520 yr I love AJ, but I still think we need to be rid of him. I mean he has what a .500 record in his career with the marlins, he's not a proven winner. Don't get me wrong, he's amazing but I think our squad now and in the future would be better off with what A.J. brings in return from a trade... Arroyo or Chacin would be great and can also help us win now.
July 25, 200520 yr I agree, and I've said the whole time. We need to trade them both. If Lowell diminishes AJs value then we have to hold on to him- which could be good because we will get better players with just AJ being dealt. Either way-AJ MUST be dealt. We can win with him (already proven) or without him. He is not coming back so lets get a good MLB pitcher and a prospect for him!
July 25, 200520 yr For those of you saying we can it without AJ and back that up with "because we won it without him before" I ask you how you can compare the 2 situations when Brad Penny who won 2 World Series games and Carl Pavano who was huge in the latter stages of the 2003 playoffs are no longer on the team? Without those two arms, I don't see how the fact they won the championship without Burnett then has any significance now.
July 25, 200520 yr I'd rather have a 4-Man rotation in the post-season of Beckett, Burnett, Willis, and Moehler than a rotation with the 4th man being a 5th starter (Valdez) or a rookie (Olsen/Vargas).

I like our chances of going deep into the playoffs if we made it and had those four guys going for us.

The "We won it without AJ" argument only works if we still had Penny and Pavano.

In general, I think you need to open yourself to new ideas. Over the course of the season, you've seem a bit close-minded.
