The White Sox are still waiting on the Marlins to accept or reject their offer of Brandon McCarthy, Damaso Marte and maybe Jose Contreras for A.J. Burnett.

Although previous indications were that the White Sox would insist on a contract extension with Burnett to complete the deal, the Chicago Tribune suggests GM Ken Williams may soften his stance if he receives assurances Burnett would put the Sox at the top of his list during the winter. ''I'm kind of both ways with it,'' Burnett said Sunday about signing an extension before the winter. ''If it's the right team and the right place, then why not? But I'm still pretty keen on seeing what's going on in the offseason. But, like I said, if it's the right place and the right team, absolutely.'' The Tribune believes Burnett might be more likely to agree to an in-season extension with the Red Sox than with the White Sox. Jul. 25 - 12:49 pm et

um what are we waiting for, make the trade now

Wow. What an offer.

If the Sox are just waiting for the Marlins to take that kick arse deal, Beinfest would be silly not to take, especially if Contraneas is in the deal.

what is so good about that trade, a pitcher with a 8.14 era in mccarthy, a washed up pitcher in contreras, and i am not even sure wat marte plays

mccarthy is a young top prospect who will be good, contreras can be lights out if he can control his pitches, and marte is one of the best lefty relievers.

mccarthy had 113 Ks in 94 innings in A ball and 29 in 26 innings in AA last year.

we improve our bullpen, add a decent SP, and a top end pitching prospect that we can keep or send him somewhere else for something else

well, marte is one of the best relievers in the game, he can go multiple innings and is a south paw to boot

i assume the reason we haven't accepted this trade is b/c we are winning. we might see the team stick it out and instead of moving AJ move prosepects to bring help (either pitching or hitting, prob pitching).

i think we are seeing a move towards keeping AJ for the season

ok how old is mccarthy and the thing is the deal MIGHT include contreras, its not for sure.

We have enough time left for Burnett to start another game before the deadline and that game will be against the Nationals. I see no reason to rush into a deal with anyone (the White Sox included) as far as AJ is concerned.

Keep the team intact this week as long as possible if it means it's a positive influence in the clubhouse and on the field.

i like this deal as well, good prospect, nice reliever and Contreras isin't washed up at all... he's doing ok in the AL, and if he moved to the NL his ERA should go down a bit thanks to not having that cursed DH.

Totally Agree as well, A.J. has been hot lately, might as well ride him out to the very last sunset before its time to trade him.

I dont think we going to move Burnett. He has already stated that he "prefers" to stay with the Marlins. I would not be surprised if the Marlins make him a good offer to stay, maybe a 3year $24million contract. Plus, we get Beckett back(which I think they are more inclined to trade, secretly), and with Willis, we only have to worry about the back of our pitcher lineup. Who knows maybe we'll keep Valdez, for really cheap after this year. That leaves a 5spot available (Vargas,Johnson,Olsen, free agent?). It will be less worrisome for the front management b/c they know what they can get from those guys, guaranteed everytime they go pitch.

We have a abundance of pitchers in the minors. WE DONT NEED anymore. I mean come'on, didnt we just draft 5 in the first two rounds in the draft, and three or four in last years. So what are we going to use them for, trade bait for more pitchers. We need to get a bullpen help, but not at the cost of a "GOOD" starter. Burnett DOES NOT want to be traded, LOOK at the way he has pitched as of late. Kind of like telling the Marlins "look at what your losing, make me an offer". The Marlins earlier said "we can't afford him", but what if they are working on a contract quietly, and that is why, this is getting prolonged? Could be. Read in between the lines. Remember the Mark Kotsay deal in Oakland. Oakland said the same thing"we are playing bad, and we might not be able to keep him". The Marlins are in the same boat. Think about it. I think we could keep someone in the bullpen.

Starters:

Beckett

Burnett

Willis

Valdez(b/c of experience)

Vargas/Olsen

Bullpen

T.Jones

Alfonseca

Olsen/Vargas(to get some experience under there belt, for next year?)

Mota

Mecir

Perisho

( I dont know if im missing anyone)

Bump?

Reidling?

Resop?

I also think they MIGHT BE, going for a BIG outfield BAT.... Klesko?Nevin? Giles? (they may want one of our mid-level prospects) Jason Lane(from Houston), but they are all in the playoff hunt...Lance Neikro or Micheal Tucker(San Fran),Milton Bradely (Dodgers), etc, and in the AL

David Delluci( who the Marlins wanted BAD two years ago, and I think is in a contract year, and would give room for Hermidia), Crawford, Huff, Hollins(Tampa, and could use young Pitching, and might pickup Lowells contract)or Ibanez (Mariner), they are not TOO expensive, and I think most are in contract years, and all could provide some pop off the bat, experience (if they call up Hermidia), and all of those teams are hungry for prospect pitchers....Think about it...

If this offer is true, I gotta believe the holdup is over how much of Contreras' contract the Marlins take on and whether or not the Sox will take Lowell w/Burnett if they want the Fish to take on the full value of Contreras' contract.

I'd also like to see the Fish pry away Anderson somehow, but I doubt that'll happen.

I'd do this trade in a heartbeat.

McCarthy is a stud, Contreras still gives us a chance to win this year and Marte is filthy and will help our bullpen tremendously.

Contreras has a 3.50 ERA away from the Cell, a definite hitters park. I think he'd do well in PPS.

Stats on Contreras

IP W L SV HR BB K ERA WHIP K/9

119.2 6 6 0 19 53 89 4.36 1.32 6.69

One downside is he has a large salary this year and next. I believe the yanks are paying for a bit. Most likely Beinfest is asking for some cash and all though. He has an okay ERA for a AL pitcher, I dont like his high walks and Whip is rather high. I think he is alot like a Leitter but a bit better.

On the other hand

Marte a left relief pitcher is dominate (I think under contract 2 years?)

IP W L SV HR BB K ERA WHIP K/9

29.2 3 3 3 4 21 34 3.03 1.65 10.31

I am at a toss up for Anderson or McCarthy. Both are solid prospects. I am not sure how long Marte is under contract either. But, I like the deal over all. If we indeed do trade away AJ.

Now the question becomes would the Red sox offer more?

I think Contreras will do better down here... he's from the Caribbean so i'm sure Florida would feel more like home, he'd be pitching in a pitching friendly NL park with NO DH and that will probably drop his ERA several clicks. As for the prospects... I think Beinfest knows what he's doing with prospects and i'm sure he'll get what he thinks is of the most value to us.

Do this trade w/wo lowell.

It says "and mabye Jose Contreras," well if it doesn't include him then no way this deal gets done.

If Contreras isin't included, I don't see how it could get done. I mean we would have done better with the Baltimore trade by getting 3 arms and an Outfielder. Marte is fantastic, but Contreras (or another starter of theirs) needs to be included or else I think we walk away from this trade as losers.
