July 29, 200521 yr A deal for Ron Villone the Marlins are targeting Seattle's Ron Villone, and sources said the Mariners hope to complete a deal soon cbssportsline
July 29, 200521 yr Better option than De Los Santos. Isn't anything special, just a good reliable arm. He's 2-3 with a 2.52 ERA to go with 40 K's in 39 innings for those that are wondering, and yes, he's lefty.
July 29, 200521 yr I like the deal, but we better not give up any of our big guys. The rumors I've heard lately make me want us just to keep what we've got.
July 29, 200521 yr Helps stifle lefties. Adds to middle and long relief. What's not to like? Unless we give up a lot in the trade or Jack uses him strictly as a LOOGY or late inning setup man.
July 29, 200521 yr Ron Villone, LHP, 2005: 39 1/3 IP in 50 games 31 H (2 HR), 11 ER, 40K, 21BB ERA: 2.52 WHIP: 1.32 Opp BA: .220, Opp. OBP: .333 K/BB: 1.91 Lefties' BAA: .218, Lefties' OBP: .315 Righties' BAA: .222, Righties' OBP: .354 Inherited Runners Scored/Inherited Runners: 14/46 (30.4%) vs WAS: 1IP, 1H, 1ER, 2BB vs PHL: 3IP, 3H, 0ER, 0BB, 2K Scouting Report 2004 Season The Mariners signed Ron Villone, who actually was Seattle's first-round pick in 1992, to be a lefthanded setup man for new closer Eddie Guardado. But roster changes and injuries forced Villone into the rotation during the middle of the season. That wasn't his strong suit, but when the year was over, Villone might have been the team's pitching MVP. Pitching & Defense Villone's stuff is considered average, though his cut fastball gave lefthanded batters a lot of trouble in 2004. Villone also uses a changeup and a hard slider. The Mariners liked Villone's fearless approach to pitching. He goes after people and isn't afraid to go inside, even to righthanders, which also can get him in trouble. He's an average fielder who does a good job of controlling the running game. He has three pickoffs in each of the past two years. 2005 Outlook Having Villone in the starting rotation isn't the ideal for a good team. He's regarded as a three-inning pitcher. Anything past that, and he'll often get in trouble. That said, Villone did everything Seattle asked of him in 2004. The best-case scenario for 2005 is that he settles back into a long-relief or a setup role.
July 29, 200521 yr I realize I should post this in the other Rumor Central thread regarding him, but for me, I think an Eddie Guardado would be more welcome in the clubhouse as a sign of the FO delivering a guy who signals their sincerity about winning it all this season. Since I have no access to the clubhouse and Admin Beinfest doesn't have me on his speed dial this is purely speculation on my part, but I think Guardado's reputation and all-star capabilities would be welcome by all the guys in the clubhouse, including Todd Jones and coupled with keeping AJ, be a big emotional uplift for the team. Who needs Wagner when you can have Everyday Eddie!
July 29, 200521 yr What do you guys think we give up for Villone? As for Guardado, isn't he due like 13 mil over the next 2 years? That's a lot to pay for a closer let alone a setup man since we already have a closer. I'd really try to get off the dream of Eddie (who i love, on my fantasy team).. especially when there are teams like Boston and Chicago who are in actual need of a closer, who have deeper pockets, that would take on the contract of a 35 year old with a jacked up shoulder. If we were actually going to burn that much money on bullpen help, we might as well forget him and use that towards locking up AJ. Anyway, I like the Villone idea. Like ferry said, he is versatile and can eat innings when needed. Looks like we'd have him locked up through next year as well. Hopefully we don't give up too much.. I would be interested in seeing what we give up, hopefully we're not stupid and give up one of your young stud pitchers.
July 29, 200521 yr We'll end up giving up Perisho and a positional prospect, I wonder, could it be WILLINGHAM?
July 29, 200521 yr a good solid lefty in the bullpen would be nice indeed. Hmm oh wells we shall see though. I expect to add 1 bullpen arm and 1 starter. Valdez will then be sent to the bullpen.
July 29, 200521 yr Good deal, the bullpen needs solidifying. He's an average player having a very good year which is a wonderful thing for us if we do infact aquire him.
July 29, 200521 yr I was hoping Stokes would leave during this season but that is highly unlikely. 878619 considering he has played in like 20 games this year...
July 29, 200521 yr How long is he signed for? He could be a good pick up for a pitching prospect most likely. Relief pitchers are at a premium right now.
July 29, 200521 yr Villone would be an outstanding pickup. I have him on my fantasy team as my setup guy and he's been great for me, so why wouldnt he be great for the Fish!
July 29, 200521 yr havent the marlins been after this guy for more than two years now? but I agree good vs lefties, veteran, versatile ... make it happen !
July 29, 200521 yr Author I think the reason it taken a little longer than expected b/c this could be a bigger deal with a Gil Meche included McKeon had a closed-door meeting with general manager Admin Beinfest, assistant GM Michael Hill and owner Jeffrey Loria after Wednesday's game but said the conversation involved things other than trades. Beinfest is most interested in adding some pitching help -- Seattle's Gil Meche is one name that recently has come up -- but is likely concentrating most on acquiring a reliever. Herald or this could be a case of Seattle trying to get the Marlins best propsect Hermida by including Meche and Villone

I heard Meche hurt his arm yesterday though and might be out for the year
July 29, 200521 yr Seattle has a few decent looking relievers besides Guardado (JJ Putz, Ron Villone, Julio Mateo). 879145 That's the closest I'll ever get to making a correct prediction on a trade :thumbup
July 31, 200521 yr Seattle's asking price for Villone, according to ESPN.com, is ridiculously high. So long, Seattle? Jul 30 - Ron Villone appears to be the one Mariners pitcher most likely to get traded, according to Jayson Stark. The Yankees and Marlins are both trying to pry him away from the Mariners. But Seattle was still placing a massive price on a 35-year-old left-hander who is in his 11th big-league season and owns one career 10-win season (in 2000) and no 10-save seasons. The Mariners reportedly asked the Yankees for two young pitchers -- Sean Henn and Scott Proctor. And the Mariners are believed to have asked Florida for two of its best pitching prospects (Jason Vargas and Scott Olsen.) :plain
